The cheaper alternative to making an item requiring one is buying item in a flatpack instead of making it for the full price - for example, a player may want a gilded clock, but to make one would cost about 140,000 coins. The player may be able to get it from the Grand Exchange (for about gilded clock) if one is for sale. This may prove difficult for some items, however, taking into account that not all gilded flatpacks were obtainable from Treasure Trails. The flatpacks that could not be obtained via Treasure Trails can only be bought at close to their construction cost, not to mention the lack of supply. Due to an update by Jagex, flatpacks can no longer be obtained from Treasure Trails so prices for those flatpacks are rising.

Gold leaf detail

A Gold leaf is an item used in Construction. It can be bought from the Stonemason in Keldagrim for 130,000 coins, or purchased on the Grand Exchange for 135,638. The lowest level item that can be made with Gold leaf is the Teak prize chest in a Games room (not to be confused with the one in the Treasure room), at level 44 Construction. Despite the great belief a Gold leaf cannot be obtained as a random gem from mining.

The cheaper alternative to making an item requiring one is buying item in a flatpack instead of making it for the full price - for example, a player may want a gilded clock, but to make one would cost about 140,000 coins. The player may be able to get it from the Grand Exchange (for about Lua error in Module:Exchange at line 74: package.lua:80: module 'Module:Exchange/Gilded clock' not found.) if one is for sale.

Additionally, purchasing an item is not a viable alternative to constructing certain items, such as the Gilded altar, because this item cannot be created as a flat pack item and sold on the Grand Exchange.
