Honour is one of the three categories of the Rules of RuneScape, which also include Respect and Security. Rules in the Honour category state that cheating or being dishonest in RuneScape is unacceptable to Jagex. Disobeying the Honour rule includes the following:[1]
- Macroing, and use of bots or third-party software
- Real-world trading
- Buying, selling or sharing an account
- Multiple logging-in
- Knowingly exploiting a bug
- Jagex staff impersonation
- Password, account, bank PIN or item scamming
- Advert blocking
- Encouraging others to break the rules
- Unofficial Player Run Games Of Chance
Unacceptable behaviour[]
| “ | An item scam is defined as cheating another player during a trade. We don't consider it a scam to ask for large amounts of gp for an item, but it is not in the spirit of the game to overprice an item. It is your responsibility to make sure that you are paying a good price.
Asking for someone's bank PIN or recovery answers is just as serious as asking for a password; giving out your bank PIN allows other players access to your bank space. Never tell another player your password, PIN number or any other account security details. If you notice a bug, please report it to us straight away. If, after noticing a bug, you continue to exploit it, you are likely to have action taken against your account. There are no cheats for any of our games. Anyone that approaches you in-game to offer you cheats should be reported under 'Encouraging rule-breaking'. Don't encourage rule-breaking, such as encouraging someone to try real-world trading, scamming or exploiting bugs. You should not swap your account with another player, or share your account with anyone else. Sharing your account makes it less secure, and is also unfair to other players. |

Macroing, and use of bots or third-party software[]
Software means any type of program, including: downloadable software (e.g. an .exe file), or web-based software (e.g. a website set up to perform a similar function with flash, java, javascript or serverside scripts).[2]
This offence can be reported by clicking the "Macroing or use of bots" button in the second page of the Report Abuse interface. More information about this rule can be found in the RuneScape Game Guide.
What is NOT allowed[]
Note that the third-party software that is not allowed is not limited to the following.[3]
- Software that attempts to communicate directly with RuneScape's game worlds.
- Software that monitors, modifies or decrypts the communications between the game applets and RuneScape's game worlds. (This includes the use of a debugger such as Cheat Engine.[4])
- Software that generates input to RuneScape game applets.
- Software that automatically moves the mouse pointer or generates mouse clicks
- Autotyping is not allowed
- AHK's is not allowed[5]
- Super-mousekeys is also not allowed[5]
- Modified or replacement versions of RuneScape game applets. Reverse-engineering the game applets is strictly prohibited. Using a modified version of the game applets is not permitted for any reason. Third-party software that displays pages/content from the RuneScape website(s), and that has specific features (i.e. toolkits) must not be used to access the website unless that software conforms with all of the other rules, and the following additional rules:
- It must not encourage rule-breaking or endanger users.
- It must not contain adverts or links to websites that encourage rule-breaking or endanger users.
- It must not automatically make repeated page/content requests from the website or otherwise make excessively bandwidth-intensive requests from RuneScape servers (each page/content request should only be in direct response to a user request each time).
- It must not bypass the normal navigation of the RuneScape website for users wishing to reach the game worlds. The software should initially only point at the front page of the websites, and should require the user to navigate through the website normally to reach the game worlds. The software must not contain or acquire direct links to the game applet.
- It must not hide or encourage the hiding of any of the adverts on the RuneScape website. To avoid encouraging users to hide the advert above the game, the pane displaying pages from the website must default to at least 630 pixels high (if viewed on a screen with a resolution higher than 800x600), and it must not be possible to resize it to less height than that, i.e. the page must be displayed in such a way that both the game and advert are fully visible at the same time.
- It must not attempt to make it easier to enter a busy game world than it would be for users not using the software. It must not contain any features to make it easier to enter or monitor busy worlds.
- If the software has its own integrated chat feature, separate from the game chat, it should make it very clear to users that this chat is not part of Jagex games and is not official, endorsed, or moderated by Jagex in any way. Furthermore, this chat should still be moderated (just not by us), and the moderators should not allow chat which infringes our Rules of Conduct. To avoid confusion with the official game chat, moderators of the external chat should not be indicated with a silver or gold crown. If the chat is IRC based, then the software should only allow access to IRC channels which conform with the above rules.
Why this rule exists[]
| “ | First, we don't want players to download third-party software from untrusted sources that can, and often do, contain keyloggers, trojans and viruses. Many players have had their accounts stolen because they have inadvertently installed hacking software on their machines. Even if the author has good intentions, an unintended flaw in their software could still put your account at risk. Some supposedly reputable software has had problems in the past. There are also cases of people deliberately writing software which looks like a useful add-on, but actually just steals your password.
Secondly, macroing ruins the game for everyone else. We don't want some players having an unfair advantage and filling up all the best training spots with bots. This game is designed to be enjoyed by humans, not bots. In the past, when we have not enforced this rule, we have rapidly found it quickly spoils the game, and players themselves start demanding that we enforce it. Now we enforce it thoroughly. |

Real-world trading, or buying power-levelling[]
Real-world trading is the term used for the real-world purchase of services with the intention of advancing your Jagex character.[7] More information can be found in the RuneScape Game Guide.
What is NOT allowed[]
Note that what is not allowed is not limited to the following.
- Purchasing gold or items[7]
- Buying a RuneScape (or any other Jagex game) account[7]
- Real-world purchase of, or offering to sell, having an account's experience (XP) raised[7]
- Real-world purchase of, or offering to sell, completion of quests or minigames[7]
- Exchange of game items or quest completion for benefits in other online games[8]
- Accepting a signature to use in the RuneScape Forums as payment for an item in-game[9]
Why this rule exists[]
The reason for this is simple - We want RuneScape to be a game where everyone has the same chance regardless of their wealth in real-life.

The RWT rule was in the Terms & Conditions for a while, but was not added to the website's rules until 9 September 2003, with the news post "Real World Trading Rule Added".[10]

If we let players start doing this it devalues our games for other players. We feel your status in real-life shouldn’t affect your ability to be successful in the game. Buying, selling or sharing an account[]
Each account should only be used by one person. More information can be found in the RuneScape Game Guide. This rule is called "Buying or selling an account" in the Report Abuse screen.
What is NOT allowed[]
- Sharing an account with anyone, including family or friends[12]
- Selling an account[13]
- Transferring an account[13]
- Lending an account[13]
- Permitting anyone else to use your account[13]
- Accepting an account that somebody offers you[13]
- Swapping your account with another player[14]

Multiple logging-in[]
You are allowed to log in to more than one account at the same time and freely trade between your accounts if all rules of RuneScape are followed. More information can be found in the RuneScape Game Guide.
What is NOT allowed[]
- Any account you are using must not be involved in any rule breaking or exploitative activity.
- Using third-party software to log into an account for yourself while you are logging into another[17]
- Having a friend play your account so you can trade between the characters[18]
Why this rule exists[]
| “ | We have this rule as part of our procedures to monitor and deal with people who choose to real world trade, gold farm and use macros. People who move wealth between accounts they own and have gained that wealth unfairly or by breaking other game rules can expect to be banned. | ” |
Knowingly exploiting a bug[]
You must not use or attempt to use any cheats or errors which you find in RuneScape's software. Any exploits which you find must be immediately reported to Jagex through Customer Support.[20] However, as long as you report the bug to Jagex straight away, don't tell anyone else until Jagex fixes it, and don't use the bug any more, then you won't get in trouble.[21]

Why this rule exists[]

Jagex staff impersonation[]
You should not attempt to impersonate Jagex staff in any way, for any reason. Know that all and only Jagex Moderators have a gold crown next to their names in chat. Anyone who does not have a gold crown next to their name is not Jagex staff.[23] More information can be found in the RuneScape Game Guide.

Password, account, bank PIN or item scamming[]
Asking/trying to persuade another player to give you their password or bank PIN for any reason is against the rules and will not be tolerated by Jagex.[25] More information can be found in the RuneScape Game Guide.
What is NOT allowed[]
- Asking/trying to persuade another player to give you their password or PIN number for any reason, even if you don't succeed[26]
- Scamming or deceiving other players[25]
- Lying to other players for your own personal gain[25]
- Asking for someone's password in a different language[27]
- To claim an item is rare when it isn't[28]
- To switch items at the last second before pressing accept, and hoping the other player won't notice[29]
Why this rule exists[]
| “ | This rule is in place to protect our players' accounts. Even if you genuinely only wanted to 'borrow' their account we obviously can't tell the difference between this and a malicious person stealing accounts. Asking other players for their password will be treated VERY seriously. | ” |
Encouraging others to break the rules[]
You must not encourage or help others to break any of the Rules of Conduct.[31] More information can be found in the RuneScape Game Guide.
What is NOT allowed[]
- Attempting to convince other players that the Rules of Conduct are different from what they actually are.
- Trying to get a reaction from another player by using offensive language against them.
- Creating, distributing or advertising third-party add-ons that break Jagex's third-party software rule.
- Advertising or linking to real-world trading websites.
- Encouraging others to abuse bugs - any bugs found should be reported to Jagex immediately.
- Hosting, facilitating, linking to, or providing software which links to, forums/chat where users discuss behaviour which breaks rules, or help or encourage each other to do so (unless a genuine effort is made to moderate such chat and prevent such discussion).
- Basically, anything else that makes someone else more likely to break a rule.[32]

Unofficial Player Run Games Of Chance[]
You must not advertise, organise, promote or take part in any unofficial player run games of chance where in game money or items are staked on the outcome of a random in game activity.

- Hosting player-run games of chance
- Advertising player-run games of chance
- Participating in player-run games of chance
Why this rule exists[]
Player-run games of chance were made illegal under RuneScape's rules as part of their continued crack-down on bots and gold farmers, which the player-run games of chance hosting community was heavily linked to.
