This a guide for training the Hunter skill

Daily/Weekly

The Penguin Hide and Seek minigame is a common way of gaining notable experience once per week for players with low level Hunter.

Suggested Equipment

Since hunting usually involves quite a bit of running around, anything you can do to reduce your weight will make it possible for you to run more.

In addition, the four major hunting areas have specific clothing for that area. Wearing the specific Camo Clothing for the hunter area you are in will increase your chances of a successful catch. There are, however, three more types of clothing helpful in hunter. At levels 28, 38 and 52 you can wear Larupia, Graahk and Kyatt clothing respectively. These different outfits will help to increase your catches in the their specific area, or in larupia's case, two areas of hunting. It is worth either making the clothes yourself from hunting the creatures, or buying them, since their increased catch rate is worth it if hunting.

Inventory

Your inventory for hunting is different depending on what you are hunting. For example, it is pointless to bring a Butterfly net if you are hunting salamanders in the Haunted Woods. Below is a list of all the hunting gear you need for most types of hunting, and the type of hunting it is used for. Note- Most of the hunting gear can be bought in the two hunting shops.

  • Box trap(s) - at least 5, 15 recommended (Box Trapping)
  • Food as some areas/catches can damage you.
  • 500 coins if using the Falconry for training, which is a major factor after level 43. (Falconry)

Training

This table lists various methods of hunting which are recommended for players interested solely in raising their hunter level. Information on profit, items dropped, etc. may be mentioned in the Notes column, but only hunting methods which are good for levelling up are listed here.

Notice that just because a method requires a higher hunter level does not imply that it is more effective than a method available for a lower hunter level. A creature that provides lower XP but takes less time per catch may prove more effective than a creature that provides higher XP at a lower rate.

  • Nothing worthwhile is obtained from hunting these; those wanting to make a profit at a similar level can hunt Polar Kebbits.
  • Remember, if a bird swoops down on your snare without getting trapped, then the snare must be taken down and set back up or it won't work.
  • Do not log out without picking up your bird snare, or it will disappear.

  • Places to hunt: directly south of the Rare Tree icon; right next the spot for bird-snaring copper longtails; and right next to the fairy ring.
  • Bring a hatchet to save inventory space by cutting the trees you need for the deadfall traps.
  • Bring a chisel to save inventory space by chiselling the spikes the kebbits drop into stackable bolts (requires Fletching level 32).
  • If you are catching birds as well, it is possible to work on fletching at the same time by using the feathers on arrowshafts made with the knife and logs, though this may not be possible if hunting rabbits.
  • At level 39 you can smoke traps, and at level 40 you can set up an extra bird snare (if you are snaring birds at the same time).

  • Groups of Spotted kebbits spawn in the central spawning areas, and single Spotted kebbits spawn on the side areas.
  • Bring 500 coins to rent the falcon. It will not fly away if you log out but it will if you teleport. Bringing more gold will allow you to stay for longer, as random events may cause your falcon to disappear.
  • During this training, the more room the better for holding the pesky bones and fur that you get when you capture them.

  • Bring at least 10-12 boxes, player may lose them during random events.
  • No lure required.
  • For maximum experience, bring a hatchet and knife to a deadfall trap at the same time.

Red Salamander

272

50,000 - 75,000

Outside Ourania Cave (use Khazard Spirit tree if possible)

Net trap

  • Not easily sold.
  • Go to the western spot, (west of altar), located at the edge of the road where the graveyard is, and use the trees there. Focus on the three trees that are close together for the fastest XP
  • Any camouflage equipment is desirable, although not necessary.
  • If you can't use the spirit tree, bring a stack of cheap runes (air, body, etc.) and use the Ourania Runecrafting Altar. Keep in mind that if you do this, you'll be roughly trading 1 rune for 272 hunting xp. This is actually a much quicker way to bank, and if you bring a stack of very cheap runes (such as mind runes) you might actually earn more money through the time saved.
  • Lacking any other method, you can simply release the salamanders if you are more concerned about experience rather than money.

Carnivorous Chinchompa

265

50,000 - 100,000

Feldip Hills (Fairy ring AKS) or Spirit larupia teleport

Box trap

  • Hunting areas usually crowded.
  • Very profitable.
  • Can be used to train Ranged (or sold to people training ranged)
  • Stackable
  • If accidentally attacked, will explode and deal twenty life points if in its blast radius.
  • These are west/south-west of the crimson swifts in Feldip Hills.
  • Set the box traps around the chinchompa respawns, and try to find a relatively high population world as the Chinchompas respawn faster when more people are using that particular server.
  • You can use a bow and arrows or crossbow to shoot the Chinchompas if they run far away, to increase the Hunter xp you get per hour.
  • It is actually suggested that you hold off training on red chinchompas until a higher level, due to two facts:

    • Each chinchompa gives a lower experience reward per catch.
    • Unlike the red salamanders, you can have and need five traps to offset the fact that these creatures collapse your traps more often and are not as easily caught—a higher hunter level also helps with this.

Powertraining Hunter

This guide shows the fastest ways to 99 hunter, with less profit than the above guide.

Level 1 - 9

Crimson Swift

Xp per catch: 32

Where: Feldip Hunting Area

Bring: 5 bird snares

Notes: 5 bird snares is suggested. Although at this level, only 1 bird snare can be used, some may disappear during random events. Therefore, it is better to bring a few more bird snares just in case this happens.

Level 9 - 19

Copper Longtail

Xp per catch: 61

Where: Piscatoris Hunting Area

Bring: 5 bird snares + Wood Camouflage Outfit ( Optional )

Repeat what you did for levels 1 - 9

Level 19 - 29/33

Tropical Wagtail

Xp per catch: 95

Where: Feldip Hunting Area

Bring: 5 bird snares

Recommended: Bring larupia clothing, especially if you stay until level 33. At 20, 2 traps can be used.

It is best to hunt them to the north of the hunter master's house. If the area is being used by more than 2 people, go to the west of the hunter master's, near the carnivorous chinchompas, where there is a small flock of 3 birds that is rarely used.

Repeat what you did for levels 1 - 19. *Notice: At first, it will be very difficult to catch the birds*

Level 29 - 43

If you have completed Priest in Peril quest, catch Swamp Lizards

Xp per catch: 152

Where: Swamp Lizard Area in Morytania - Near Canifis

Bring: 5 ropes, 5 small fishing nets. You can also bring a decent amount of guam tar (300) for baiting, which speeds up the catching process tremendously.

Release the lizards when you have a full inventory of them. This method is the best for 29 - 43 and takes less than 2 hours.

For those who have not completed Priest in Peril, continue with Tropical Wagtails until level 33.

Level 33 - 43

Catch Barbtailed Kebbits

Xp per catch: 168

Where: Feldip Hunting Area

Bring: A hatchet and a knife

To catch them, cut the jungle trees until you have a few logs. Click on one of the boulders and your character will set up a deadfall trap. *Note* You can only set up 1 deadfall trap at a time.

Level 43-53/57

Spotted Kebbits

Xp per catch: 104

Where: Piscatoris Falconry

Bring: 500gp

Don't bring gloves, bracelets, shields, or weapons

To catch the kebbits, you only have to click on them and your falcon will swoop down and capture them.(NOTE: Catching swamp lizards results in faster experience. Also, they are easier to release than dropping all the spotted hides and burying bones)

Level 57-59

Dark Kebbits

Xp per catch:132

Where: Falconry

Bring:500gp or more

Don't bring gloves, braclets, shields, or weapons

Level 53 - 59/80

Chinchompa

Xp per catch: 198

Where: Piscatoris hunting area

Bring: 5 box traps. Note that until 80 you may not set up more than 4 traps. It is a good idea to have spares.

Level 59 - 80

Red Salamander

Xp per catch: 272

Location: Red Salamander Area - Just south of the ZMI altar cave Entrance. North of the observatory.

Bring: 5 ropes and 5 small fishing nets. Note that until 80 you may not set up more than 4 traps (and indeed three trees will keep most hunters busy). However it is a good idea to have spares.

Level 69 - 80

Dashing and Dark Kebbits

Xp per catch: 156 and 132, Respectively

Location: Falconry

Don't bring anything that goes in the ring or hand space. Remember to bring 500 gp for renting the falcon.

Level 80 - 99

Red Chinchompa

Xp per catch: 265

Where: Feldip Hunter Area

Bring: 5 box traps

Although you can start catching red chinchompas at level 63, it is not recommended. The areas of hunting are usually crowded and they're difficult to catch at level 63.

Hunting With Brawlers

There are three methods that most people would consider using hunting brawling gloves on.  These are black salamanders, red chinchompas and grenwalls and pawyas (together).

Black salamander

Apparently, black salamanders are ~300k xp/hour with brawlers, and as they give 304 xp each, this means ~247 caught per hour, and no gp/hour as you would release the salamanders.  As the brawlers last for ~275 catches, the brawlers will give 300k xp and 0gp per hour for ~1.1 hours. Beware, however: it can be very difficult to train uninterrupted in the wilderness.

Red chinchompas

Red chinchompas are about 130k xp/hour with the 1-spawn trick, and so are about 195k xp/hour with brawlers, and as they give 265 xp each, this means ~491 caught per hour, and as they are currently worth 712 gp each median price, that is ~350k gp per hour. As the brawlers last for ~275 catches, the brawlers will give 195k xp and 350k cash per hour for about 0.6 hours.

Grenwall and Pawyas

Grenwall and pawyas together are about 70k xp/hour, and so are about 105k xp/hour with brawlers. The pawyas give 400 xp each, and the Grenwall give 1100 xp each.  You will be hunting 1 pawya for every 1 grenwall, so this is an average of 750 xp per catch.  Therefore, ~93 catches per hour.  As ~46 of these will be Grenwalls, and they give an average of 20 spikes each, at 1214 gp per spike this will be ~1,117K gp per hour.  As the brawlers last for ~275 catches, the brawlers will give 105k xp and ~1,117K gp per hour for 3 hours.

Analysis

Black salamanders = 300k xp and 0gp per hour for 1.1 hours + 130k xp and 350k gp per hour for 1.9 hours = 330k xp and 0 gp + 247k xp and 665k gp = 577k xp and 665k gp in 3 hours.

Red chinchompas = 195k xp and 350k gp per hour for 0.6 hours + 130k xp and 350k gp per hour for 2.4 hours = 117k xp and 210k gp + 321k xp and 840k gp = 438k xp and 1,050K gp in 3 hours.

Grenwalls and pawyas = 105k xp and 1,117k gp per hour for 3 hours = 315k xp and 3,351k gp in 3 hours.

As you can see, each training method could be seen as an option, so we have to perform an efficiency analysis:

If you rate your time over 2193k/hour, the best way to use hunting brawlers is on black salamanders.

If you rate your time under 2193k/hour, the best way to use hunting brawlers is on Grenwalls and Pawyas.

It is never efficient to use hunting brawlers on red chinchompas.

However, danger has to be taken into account. Red chinchompas are probably more dangerous than Grewalls and Pawyas, so still remain never efficient. However, black samanders are far more dangerous than Grewalls and Pawyas, and so you are far more likely to lose your brawling gloves. Therefore, even for players who rate their time over 2193k gp/hour, Grenwalls and Pawyas could be considered.
