Hydrix dragons are high-level Slayer monsters requiring level 101 Slayer to kill. They are part of the gemstone dragon group, and are the strongest dragon of this type.

A total of six hydrix dragons are located in the gemstone cavern under the Shilo Village mining site. They require the completion of the hard Karamja achievements in order to access them in the gem rock cavern underneath. In order to pass the barrier to confront them, players are also required to sacrifice a number of uncut dragonstone, uncut onyx, or uncut hydrix gems - with each gem type allowing the player to kill a certain number of dragons within their respective chamber; up to a limit of storing 60,000 kills at a time.

If the player is on a gemstone dragon Slayer task, charges are neither needed nor consumed.

Getting there

The cave is located inside the gem mine in the northern part of Shilo Village in Karamja.

To be able to enter the cave players must have completed the hard Karamja achievements. To access the mine players can teleport directly to the gem mine with the option in the Karamja gloves 3 or 4.

Strategies

Hydrix dragons attack primarily with magic, although they will use both magic and melee if within melee range in addition to the regular dragon fire attack.

Hydrix dragons have a special attack in which they send a row of spikes towards the area that the player is currently standing on. After a short delay, there is a 3 by 3 square area where spikes appear, dealing magic damage and draining adrenaline to 0, while also applying a debuff where adrenaline gained is reduced to half for a few seconds. However, they will not use this special attack if the player remains within melee distance of them.

Devotion in conjunction with Protect / Deflect Magic does block all damage done by the special attack, but it does not block the adrenaline loss nor does it prevent the debuff from occuring. While one may also use Resonance to heal from the attack, due to the debuff still occurring and its crippling nature, one should dodge it instead.

It is possible to kill hydrix dragons with an aggression potion active and while not paying attention to the possible special attacks rather safely by placing a hydrix dragon soul in their own Slayer dungeon and standing on top of the dragon's spawn point. This makes it likely that the dragon targets the player before it gets out of melee distance, and thus prevents it from using its special attacks.

Trivia

• It was the first monster to have a static Slayer level above 99.
• Upon release, the highest possible Slayer level was still 99, thus meaning one would've needed to utilise boosts to be allowed to kill them no matter what level they were. Wilder pies were released alongside the gemstone dragon update to ensure people could get consistent kills without having to reboost.
• The experience rates were buffed a few months after release due to player complaints.
