The investigator's coat is an item obtained as a reward from the second Cryptic Clue Fest. It was discovered in quickchat on 19 August 2010, the same day that Cryptic Clue Fest II was released, leading many players to speculate that it will be a reward from the completing the event. Further adding to the speculation is its appearance along side the Investigator's hat and Investigator's trousers, the three of which complete the Investigator's outfit.
The whole outfit could be obtained 5 days after the release of Cryptic Clue Fest II. At first the coat wasn't seen in the Toy box, but the hat and trousers were. The coat could be placed into the toy box, but it couldn't be retrieved again. This has since been fixed. It, along with the rest of the set, has no stat bonuses.
