Karil the Tainted's equipment is a set of Ranging armour and crossbow from the Barrows minigame. Completing the Barrows minigame does not guarantee players will get a Barrows item. The whole requires 70 Defence to wear the armour and 70 Ranged to wield the weapon. As Karil uses Ranged, his armour gives a high Magic defence bonus, making it popular for fighting enemies with powerful Magic attacks, such as the Corporeal Beast. The crossbow, unlike many other crossbows, is two handed and requires a special type of ammunition called Bolt racks. Bolt racks can be obtained by opening chests in the Barrows activity, buying from Ak-Haranu on the Port Phasmatys docks for 420 coins each, trading with another player, or purchasing through the Grand Exchange. Karil's can be used in pvp to stop players from escaping via agility shortcuts.

The set effect is used occasionally by players as a means of shutting down macroers at the Wilderness Agility course, as the bots will continuously eat - allowing their agility to be drained effectively. This is often done in large groups, following the mass reporting of said bots.

Before the update on the 14/01/13, Karil's equipment had the effect Tainted Shot. If the attack was successful, Tainted Shot had a chance of lowering the target player's Agility level by what was hit divided by 100.

Since the update however, the effect has been changed to Karil's Taint. Karil's Taint has a chance of reducing the player's target's Magic level in each hit.
