Lexicus Runewright is one of the bosses found in Daemonheim, requiring 39 Dungeoneering. He uses magic and melee to attack. Both target one individual. It should be noted that he summons books which attack with Ranged, Magic and Melee (long ranged melee) while Lexicus yells, "Almanac Army, attack!". Every once in a while, he will use his special attack "Book barrage" to summon two or more glowing books which then glide toward the location where the player was when Lexicus initiated the spell. They will explode and deal up to 200 damage per book if the player does not run away to a different spot. Also, he deflects 1/3 of any melee damage you deal, so either bring lots of food or use ranged or magic.

Method(s) to defeat

The boss uses two styles of attack. However his summoned books use three. Lexicus will not use melee except when he is adjacent to the player. The Book Barrage damage cannot be blocked by prayers and will stack if multiple books splash a single player in a radius. A decent level of run energy is a necessity. The boss will only teleport (and summon books as well as cast book barrage) a fixed number of times. During the fight, Lexicus will teleport around the room often and summon several 10-life point books (namely Tome of Magic, Tome of Ranged and Tome of Strength, notice however all books use long range attacks, and Tome of Strength is renowned as one of the monsters to use melee at a very long range); he will stop attacking you during this time until you confront him again. He summons his "Almanac Army" at the start of the fight and every additional time he teleports. The books are generally level 20-65 with 10 life points, however hitting them is 100% success with 10 damage, thus making them all one-hit kill monsters. It is assumed that all their levels are in their respective offensive stat, meaning they can hit often and high enough that they will be a very significant nuisance as they grow in number. It is therefore strongly suggested that the time be taken to kill these books as soon as they are summoned, as Lexicus ceases to attack after summoning which gives the player ample time to confront the books. Take some time to deal with the books, as the books hit very often and can hit through prayers. A summoning familiar is useful for keeping the books at bay, since you can order it to attack the books without interrupting your own attacks on Lexicus. Even a BoB or healing familiar is often able to one-hit the books.

Alternatively, if all players fighting keep to the very corners of the room, Lexicus rarely summons books, and though he does call out Book barrage, it will not actually occur. This makes him much simpler to defeat, as a player can keep on Protect from Magic to negate much of his damage and simply range him while moving between the safety of the corners whenever he teleports out of attacking range.

Solo strategies

Generally, ranging is valued over melee and magic, because melee will be deflected damage back to player, and Lexicus, being a mage, has a high magic resistance.

For rangers, full ranged armour, and protect from ranged / magic prayer are ideal in defeating the boss. He has very low range and melee defence. A shortbow set to rapid style and auto-retailate on is recommended, as to save time killing the books and having fast reflexes. Using the protect from magic prayer will cause most of damage to be neglected, however summoned books would still deal minor damage.

Another technique is to range and wear full melee armour and use the protect from magic prayer, for this will provide protection against all the attacks; however, if prayer is used up before the boss is nearly killed, the magic damage he casts onto the player will be serious. A good prayer level is necessary for this method.

Meleers should bring extra food to compensate for the damage reflected. Also, unless a player can use Protect From Magic, wearing full armour is not suggested since many of the attacks used are magic based. In addition, players should note that Lexicus is very succeptible to Stab and Slash, but surprisingly resistant to Crush, for while a Fractite maul will have trouble hitting him, a Fractite longsword will do just fine.

Mages must use the best spell available to them and use protection prayers, otherwise either the player will be unable to hit Lexicus or he/she will be prone to attacks of summoned books.

It should be noted that it is possible to use the dungeon home teleport spell to escape the room. This is done by blocking his attacks with the walls and bookcases long enough to cast the spell. This can be very useful if you are low on food and do not wish to die. By dropping the group gatestone in the boss room and storing food in the dungeon home, you can kill him fairly easily.

Team strategies

Please note that all attacks from this boss except book barrage are single-targeted, although multiple summoned books will attack multiple targets. The teaming allows some players to use melee to tank Lexicus, or even using maul to deal massive damage with decent accuracy. However, at least one supporting ranger needs to stay away from Lexicus, so that he can dispatch books quick enough to defend the tankers.

Trivia

• Lexicus Runewright's name is likely a play on the words lexicon, rune, and wright. Lexicon stems from the Greek "lexikos," meaning "pertaining to words," while wright is a common suffix meaning "worker."
• He is also known in game as the Librarimancer. This means that he derives energy from books (Latin liber).
• He has an interesting death animation in which he falls to his knees, opens his book, and reads it as he keels over.
• Lexicus seems to have a relationship with Astea Frostweb.
• Lexicus fights in a similar way to Zexion from the Kingdom Hearts series, using a book and an army of flying books.
• In his letters, Marmaros compared Lexicus' fighting style to something that "Mad Melzar" would do.
• Even if you're not fighting Lexicus he will teleport around his room and shouting "Almanac army, attack!" but no books appear.
• His dialogue "Book barrage!" may be based on the Barrage spells from Ancient magicks.
• Lexicus Runewright's book barrage spell can hit over 1000 on summoning familiars.
• Even if you hit zero on him, his special ability will take effect and you will receive the message: "The Librarimancer reflects some of your damage at you!" and receive a blue splat for no damage. Battling this boss is a good way to flood your chatbox!
• Damage less than 3 will not do any reflection on you.
• According to the Dungeoneering journals, Lexicus was the one who concluded that binding runes to a Behemoth would result in better taming of the creatures. Thus, he is the creator of the Runebound behemoth.

Glitches and errors

• Occasionally his summoned tomes will remain after he is slain and will continue to attack you, and although they only have 10 life points, they can cause enough damage to finish you unexpectedly after the fight. This is rare nowadays as books will be deactivated as soon as Lexicus is defeated.
• However, if you happen to finish him at the moment he teleports and he dies once he finishes teleporting, the books will remain 'alive'. This glitch is not fixed.
