[FAQ] [doc]

Living rock patriarchs are huge creatures that randomly spawn in the Living Rock Caverns. They were released along with the Living Rock Caverns on 17 September 2009. When a patriarch appears, any player around the area can attack it, but since the cavern is a single-combat area only one player can fight it. Protect from Melee is recommended, but they are not very powerful for their combat level and a high-levelled player with good armour can easily kill it without any food or prayer. When slain, the patriarch drops its entire drop table (which consists of four items) at once.

Despite common belief, their spawn is not triggered by killing living rock creatures, but rather the amount of people in the world. They spawn every two hours, tending to appear in the south-west, south-east, and north-east corners of the cavern.

Tips

Being a non-aggressive monster it can be difficult to actually engage the Patriarch in combat, since it is often surrounded by aggressive Living rock protectors and Living rock strikers. If players accidentally engage in combat with a Striker, it can be very difficult to shake them off because of their far reaching range attacks and tendency to follow players for a fair distance. Players will normally have to either kill the striker, run to the opposite side of the cave to lose them, or get the striker stuck behind the many obstacles, but in this time another player may attack the Patriarch. In order to avoid this, players can take enough runes to cast a spell such as wind bolt; this way, players may quickly engage the Patriarch from a distance in a safe spot. It is advised for the players to continue casting the spell until the Patriarch approaches them, as it is still possible for protectors or strikers to engage the player in combat while they are maging the Patriarch.

Trivia

  • The word 'patriarch' means 'father-ruler.'
  • A single, 100% chance drop from these monsters is worth 236251 coins.
  • They appear to have several Rock critters on their bodies, which some players speculate might mean that the critters are newborn Living Rock Creatures, pets, or just a sort of 'cleaning' animal.
  • They appear to have crowns on their heads, as is befitting of a patriarch.
