Loar Shades lurk around Mort'ton and the nearby swamp regions surrounding the shade catacombs. They initially appear as dark greenish moving shadows (known as Loar Shadows) on the ground and then rise from the depths to attack or retaliate. Their remains can be cremated with any pyre logs.
The Salve amulet, Salve Amulet (e) and Gadderhammer work well on this shade and are very useful if shades are assigned for a slayer task. They are easy to defeat for players with a combat level of 70 or higher, but they have no standard drops besides their remains. Up to a point the gadderhammer will be useful. If you are a low level player then it is worth using. However once your melee combat stats get much higher it is a better option to use other weapons. This is because the gadderhammer has low combat stats, which make it less effective than higher level weapons. Because they are weak to water, ice spells from the Ancient spell book can prove effective.
Loar shades' attacks are quite accurate and may temporarily reduce your Strength level by one. When fighting large groups of shades, such as during the Shades of Mort'ton minigame, the stat drain can quickly stack up, leaving the player with an enormous drain on their Strength level in minutes. It is a good idea to attack shades from a distance, or use fast hitting melee attacks to defeat this enemy as quick as possible to minimise food consumption. The combat boost from a god banner will also give a Strength boost which constantly refreshes for 30 minutes, completely negating the stat drain from the shades during that time, though the boost can only be used once per day.
Loar Shades have an extremely large wander radius and can go over terrain such as water. They can follow players to as far as the Barrows entrance and the Burgh de Rott entrance. They are also capable of moving from water onto bridges in sections where the fence is broken.
If attacked by one of these, after about a minute of not retaliating, Loar Shades will again become Loar Shadows and remain unaggressive for a few seconds.
Loar Shades used to be aggressive. This was changed in a hidden update.
On 18 April2016, Loar shades and all other shades had their stats rebalanced. Their weakness also changed to water spells; before the update they were weak to arrows.
