A Mace is a one-handed (with the exception of the barrows maces) melee weapon, and it is one of the few weapons that have crush for a primary attack type. Maces are special in that they provide a Prayer bonus, a trait shared by only a few other weapon-class items. The mace also has a controlled attack style, giving equal experience to Attack, Strength, and Defence. However, majority of other weapons have a considerably weaker Controlled attack style.

Maces are considered to be low-tier weapons and are rarely used, although the Dragon Mace is sometimes used for its powerful Special attack as a finishing or opening attack.

Players can buy maces from bronze to adamant in Flynn's Mace Market in Falador. Rune maces can be bought from the Champions' Guild. Dragon maces can be bought from the Heroes' Guild and require the completion of the Heroes' Quest to be wielded.

Although a flail is technically not a mace, the Verac's flail is classified as one, due to its primary and secondary attack styles being that of a mace, as well as the presence of its Prayer bonus. Despite being one-handed, maces are held in two hands when striking, even with a shield
