Misthalin standard

The Kingdom of Misthalin is a major kingdom within Gielinor, and is currently ruled by King Roald III and Queen Ellamaria. Misthalin is the most powerful human nation and by far the oldest, having existed prominently since the late Fourth Age, and its capital, Varrock, having existed in some form since soon after the end of the God Wars. Misthalin's primary economic activities are Smithing, Mining, and trading. It is divided in half by the River Lum, and its eastern border with Morytania is the River Salve. Most of its territory exists as Free-to-play areas.

Climate[]

Misthalin has a mild climate, allowing a wide range of plant life to grow upon it. To the north the climate is colder, with evergreen trees growing in wild abundance. In the south, the climate is more mild with more oaks and willows. Water is always close by, with bodies of water scattered around.

Communities[]

Most of the population outside the capital consists of farmers and other such people who labour in the wealth of the Breadbasket of Misthalin. This effectively splits the kingdom's community in two.

Misthalin is a nation split quite evenly in two. The population outside Varrock is predominantly agricultural, and provides a great deal of food for the capital and for sale to other, poorer nations. The people of the capital, though, are largely tradesmen and artisans, who work with raw materials to produce something more immediately useful. This split in society may seem to work effectively, but the problem can be seen most clearly in the southern parts of Varrock. This is where the rural citizens who have come to the capital frequently end up, unskilled and naive, living off scraps and dressing in the rags of clothes discarded by the wealthy.

Government[]

The Kingdom of Misthalin is a monarchy, ruled by King Roald. Other rulers such as Lumbridge's Duke Horacio are apparent, who probably serve King Roald in a semi-feudal fashion. The kingdom is, or at least once was, fully ruled through feudalism, as evidenced by Polonius being positioned as Duke of Lumbridge in exchange for his services to King Claudius in 1937 of the Fourth Age.[2] It is a free country, with many open policies while still having a semi-strict and strongly enforced bill of laws, for rights and defence.

History of Misthalin[]

The First Age[]

Before the start of the First Age, the god Guthix found a world he believed to be perfect. He used the Stone of Jas to shape the land and open portals so it could be populated, marking the start of the First Age. Nothing is known about Misthalin during this time.

The Second Age[]

By the end of the Second Age, Misthalin was divided into two. Northern areas were part of the Zarosian kingdom, including the city Senntisten (located under the present-day Digsite) and the fortress-city of Paddewwa (located near and in modern day Edgeville).

Third Age: The God Wars[]

Misthalin suffered heavily during the God Wars of the Third Age. While Misthalin did not suffer as badly as the Wilderness, Zaros' empire was ended, and all of his cities were utterly destroyed. Senntisten outlasted the rest of his cities, but was eventually conquered by a combined army of Zamorakians and Saradominists. The city was briefly ruled by Zamorak before it was taken and destroyed by Saradominists, who built their own city of Saranthium over the ruins in order to conceal what was left behind.

Fourth Age[]

During the Fourth Age, Saranthium rapidly fell into ruin within the first hundred years. The area now known as Misthalin was densely forested in the north, and was inhabited only by nomads, barbaric humans, and goblins. In the year 700, travellers found a baby alone near an area where the capital of Varrock is currently located. They took it as a good omen and set up a permanent village there, known as Avarrocka. What follows is the Legend of Arrav, the tale of a man named Arrav who set out to find the now-named Shield of Arrav, a shield with legendary magical powers. After early conflicts with Goblins, a peace treaty was agreed upon, and Avarrocka prospered thereafter. Other permanent settlements eventually began to appear. Avarrocka was originally ruled by an oligarchical council known as the Elders of Avarrocka, but their power was eventually transferred to their first king. By the year 1000, the surrounding tribes all paid homage to Avarrocka, and this marked the start of the Kingdom of Misthalin. It is also around this time that the city took on its current name of Varrock.

Over time, Misthalin became stronger and better organised. In the year 1100, however, Lord Lowerniel Vergidiyad Drakan declared war on Misthalin. His hordes crossed over the River Salve, and had soon conquered the lands east of Avarrocka. Drakan's forces were stopped, but the captured territories were not reclaimed. Over the next 100 years, Drakan gradually advanced, until he almost had Avarrocka under siege. Before he could take the city, he was defeated by the army led by the Seven Priestly Warriors. After the war was over, they blessed the river Salve, so that supporters of Drakan could never again cross the river.

Throughout the middle of the Fourth Age, humans in general became more civilised. This was beneficial to Misthalin, as they soon established trade links with Asgarnia and other locations on Crandor, which was formerly inhabited until Elvarg's scourge, and Entrana. Eventually, Asgarnia fell into ruin, and petty individual kingdoms arose in its place, however Misthalin became increasingly strong despite this.

In the year 1777, many settlers from Misthalin crossed the river Salve, into Morytania. They were all either wiped out, or enslaved by Drakan, although records do not show exactly when, or how. Paterdomus still remains by Morytania, however. Many more settlements became established in Misthalin over the next two centuries. It was in the year 1937, during the reign of King Claudius, that Polonius was granted the land north of the swamps by the mouth of the River Lum, and became the first Duke of Lumbridge.

During the Fifth Age, after the discovery of runestones, humans rapidly became dominant. Misthalin became ever more powerful, and Asgarnia was soon re-established. Now that there was no longer a continuous threat of war, humans began to develop their culture and living standards. One of the greatest works in Varrock was the sewer system, originally for just the palace, but later expanded to the whole city. They were completed in the reign of King Botolph, in the year 20. It was also in this year that the demon Delrith attacked Varrock, but was defeated by Wally.

The greatest catastrophe of the Fifth Age was when the Fremennik tribes launched the Runecrafting Crusades, on and off between the years 42 and 62. The Imcando dwarves were wiped out almost entirely. The barbarians gave up, and settled down in the Barbarian Village, renamed Gunnarsgrunn in 169, after their chieftain was killed. When the Wizards' Tower was burnt down due to a magical explosion in 70, the Red Order of wizards was blamed for it and Zamorakians were banished from the rebuilt second tower, making practising magic and runecrafting, extremely tedious for them.

In the year 139, the city-state of Crandor was destroyed by the dragon Elvarg. This deeply affected the government of Misthalin, and affected the economy negatively, as much of their trade had been conducted with Crandor. In the year 143, the Shield of Arrav was stolen from the Varrock Museum by an organised crime syndicate known as the Phoenix Gang. They fought over it, each rival faction in the gang taking half after it was broken. The break away group called themselves the Black Arm Gang. Though King Roald II issued a proclamation promising 1,200 coins to whoever returned it, it was only recently recovered.

In the year 154, Varrock was attacked by an undead army commanded by the Mahjarrat Lucien but was immediately defeated due to the high supply of runestones (or so it was believed; in truth it was defeated by the dark mage Nomad). In the year 169, the government renovated the ruins of Paddewwa, naming the town Edgeville.

Religion[]

Most of the civilians worship Saradomin as their god, however, in the Second Age, Zaros was predominant, since Misthalin was in the Zarosian Empire. After the God Wars they likely changed because of Saranthium.

Worshipers of Zamorak also reside in the kingdom, some of them are Moldark in Edgeville, The Mage of Zamorak In Varrock, Bosun Higgs in Draynor Village and The Zamorakian Herbalist family In Lumbrige.

True heir to the Throne[]

During the Return to Canifis novel, it is revealed that one of King Roald's ancestors, Tenebra, the eldest of The Five Princes of Misthalin is still alive, now as a Vampyre Lord. As such, it is his son, Gar'rth's, birthright to reclaim the throne of Misthalin.
