Template:Relative location The Monastery of Ascension is a slayer dungeon in the Feldip Hills that contains a number of magic-based monsters, all of which are weak to Ranged. The monastery is home to the Order of Ascension, a former Guthixian group that has been kidnapping local villagers. The lowest level monsters in the monastery require 81 Slayer, while the bosses require 95 Slayer.

The main purpose of the dungeon is for hunting the ascension crossbow, currently the best Ranged weapon in the game. The crossbow is made by putting together a dragon crossbow and six ascension signets dropped by the legiones bosses, along with 100 ascension shards, uncommon drops from the monsters in the dungeon. The legiones are accessed by using the ascension keystones on their individual laboratories, which are dropped by the slayer monsters in the dungeon.

Location

Monastery of Ascension building

The outside of the Monastery, which houses a massive underground complex.

The Monastery of Ascension is located north-west of Oo'glog, east of Mobilising Armies. Fast ways to get there are with a ring of duelling or spirit tree to Mobilising Armies, or using the charter ship to Oo'glog.  Players can also use the fairy ring coordinates a k s  to be teleported and travel south west to reach the temple.

A tour of the dungeon

Giant Guthix statue

The gigantic statue of Guthix.

The Monastery of Ascension requires 81 Slayer to enter. The dungeon is on one level, with the entrance and exit at the most southern point. Rorarii, Gladii, Capsarii and Scutarii are scattered around the main area, which extends around a giant pit in the middle of the dungeon, which can be avoided by using the three agility shortcuts. There is also an area that can only be accessed through two other level 90 shortcuts, containing more slayer monsters.

There are also six laboratories, with Primus's the closest to the entrance to Sextus's, which is the farthest from the entrance. To access their rooms, you need their respective key (Ascension Keystone Sextus for Sextus's lab), along with 95 Slayer to open the door. Before entering, you will be given a warning that they are stronger than the inhabitants outside. To leave, you can either teleport or leave quickly by the door you came in, as each laboratory is instanced. If you die in the laboratory, your grave will be outside the entrance.

NPCs

The only non-player character near the monastery is Ocellus, found directly outside the entrance. He tells you to go down and stop the Order of Ascension from kidnapping the villagers. He can also combine the appropriate items into an ascension crossbow.

Monsters

Slayer creatures

All four of the creatures require 81 Slayer and can be assigned by Duradel/Lapalok or Kuradal. Each of them are found all around the monastery, but some areas are more heavily populated than others. Refer to the map.

Monster Picture Combat level Life points Notes
Rorarius Rorarius 120 6000 Although weak individually, bear in mind that when attacking a group of Rorarii they will all attack you.
Gladius Gladius 130 8000 Gladii will charge at you and stun you quite often, before teleporting away twice and resuming normal attacks. Whilst stunning you, Gladii take three times the damage, so if you are co-oping a partner can deal large damage.
Capsarius
Capsarius
150 3750 Capsarii are weak by themselves, but heal damaged units and make them invincible. It is highly recommended to kill the Capsarii as they spawn - nearby NPCs will become nigh-on invincible if targetted by her defence buffs and healing.
Scutarius Scutarius 150 10000 Scutarii take drastically lower damage when attacked from the front, so it is highly advised to attack them while they face away from you if possible. This can be done with a co-op partner distracting it, or you can Stun it and run behind it.

Legiones

Each of the legiones requires his appropriate keystone to enter his room. They each drop a signet that can be used to make the ascension crossbow. They all are level 175 with 30,000 life points.

Monster Picture Keystone Signet Ability
Legio Primus Legio Primus Ascension Keystone Primus Primus Ascension signet I Signet I Grows stronger with time
Legio Secundus Legio Secundus Ascension Keystone Secundus Secundus Ascension signet II Signet II Lightning strikes more often.
Legio Tertius Legio Tertius Ascension Keystone Tertius Tertius Ascension signet III Signet III Summons minions to aid him
Legio Quartus Legio Quartus Ascension Keystone Quartus Quartus Ascension signet IV Signet IV Teleports all players to him
Legio Quintus Legio Quintus Ascension Keystone Quintus Quintus Ascension signet V Signet V Creates Lines of Ascension, which deal heavy damage when moved over.
Legio Sextus Legio Sextus Ascension Keystone Sextus Sextus Ascension signet VI Signet VI Summons more lightning than the others, which lasts for seven seconds instead of three.

Unique items

Ascension crossbow

Ascension crossbow
Main article: Ascension crossbow

The most sought after item in the dungeon, the ascension crossbow is made by giving Ocellus the six signets of the legiones with main hand or off hand dragon crossbow, and 100 ascension shards. It degrades the same way as drygore weaponry, lasting for 10 hours until it must be repaired by Bob for 2 million coins or a lower amount on your armour stand depending on your Smithing level. A further 100 shards can be added to make an Off-hand Ascension crossbow. The bolts for the crossbow are made by fletching ascension shards, requiring 90 Fletching and giving one bolt per shard.

Ascension keys

Another sought after item which is a must to make the Ascension crossbow. It can be dropped by any of the four basic monsters quite rarely. There are six different types of keys, and each one only lasts for one kill before disintegrating.

Fragment ammunition

The slayer monsters also drop ascension fragments, which can be fletched with bronze bolts and bronze arrows to create fragment bolts and fragment arrows, respectively, which are nearly useless against most creatures, but are equivalent to royal bolts against the Ascension creatures.

History of the Order

Main article: History of the Order

The slayer creatures drop order journal pages, which are added to the History of the Order to learn more about the history of the Order of Ascension and the Fourth and Fifth Ages. The journal pages can also be found by looting the rooms in the dungeon, such as the bookcases near Legiones IV-VI. You can also loot a journal page in a Legiones' laboratory.

Trivia

Experimented villagers

A villager being transformed into one of the Ascended.

  • The dungeon's inhabitants are similar to the Polypore Dungeon in terms of attack. Both attack with magic attacks. However, the inhabitants of this dungeon are immune to non-ranged attacks, while the ones at the Polypore Dungeon have a damage cap of 40 for any non-magic based attack.
  • The dungeon's inhabitants have unique spawning animations, as they have their own animations when respawning. Most monsters simply "pop out" when respawning.
  • With the release of this dungeon, the Legiones are currently the only boss monsters that have a Slayer level to kill. (Most boss monsters like K'ril Tsutsaroth are classified as a lesser form of monster, in this case a Greater Demon, which only require a Slayer level of 1, while the Legiones require 95 Slayer).
    • Despite this requirement, they do not show on the Slayer Guide's "Monsters" or "All". This may be an oversight from Jagex. The Legiones also do not show up on the adventurer's log despite being a type of boss.
  • The 95 slayer requirement can be achieved with boosts; such as a wild pie at level 90 slayer.
  • The dungeon's Legiones are one of the few bosses that can only be soloed (completely optional), or co-oped.
  • There is a large statue of Guthix in his godly form in the middle of the dungeon. There is a look-at option on the statue, and the resulting message is the same even when examined.
  • The dungeon is one of the few Slayer Dungeons to utilize Agility for a benefit, the others being the Fremennik Slayer Dungeon, Polypore Dungeon and Kuradal's Dungeon.
  • Throughout the dungeon, there are bodies of the dead being transformed into one of the Ascended.
  • Despite the fact that the release said that the Order "kidnaps villagers", throughout several areas of the dungeon and in the Legiones' rooms there are mummy piles in them. Also, Ocellus is guarding the entrance to make sure nothing gets out, which would make the release statement quite contradictory.
  • The keys are unique in terms of numerical order. Each one of the Legiones names is in order, from Primus, which is 1, to Sextus, which is 6.
  • The dungeon seems to be completely inspired by Ancient Rome. There are many areas that show that it is mainly of Roman influence. For example, Gladius is the basic ancient roman sword, from which the famous gladiators took the name. Also, the names have Roman numerals in them, such as "Ascension Keystone I", "Ascension Signet IV", etc. The names of the Legiones are also based on Roman ordinal numbers.
  • Due to several player complaints on how these monsters had a moderately high Slayer requirement but had drops that were very low levelled (e.g Rorarius dropping Lava runes), Jagex refined all of the inhabitant's drops. Some of the drops were removed, new ones added, some old ones had more in quantity and they now drop charms.
