To wield obsidian weaponry, the player must have at least 60 Attack, Strength, Magic or Ranged, While obsidian armour requires at least 80 Defence to wear (except the cape, which has no requirements and the buyable shield, which has a 60 Defence requirement). The Obsidian armour set is untradeable and is made by Smithing obsidian bars, which can only be acquired by playing the Fight Cauldron minigame after the quest The Brink of Extinction.

Obsidian armour concept art

Concept art for the obsidian armor from The Brink of Extinction.

The Brink of Extinction, a Grandmaster quest, released the obsidian armour, which is smithable with 80+ Smithing. 90 Smithing (assistable[source needed]) is required to create the full set and 80 Defence to wear any part. The sets, like Void Knight equipment, use a helm aligned with melee, ranged, or mage, while the body, legs, and other parts are typeless. When the set is equipped with the helm, it gives a 10% accuracy boost in the combat style to which it is aligned. Obsidian armour also reduces the damage taken from TokHaar and TzHaar creatures by a total of 20%. However, players will take triple damage in PvP combat and combat anywhere that is not in TzHaar city, greatly limiting the armour's utility.
