Enchanted onyx bolts have a Life leech special. This gives the bolts a chance of doing extra damage (20-25% chance from testing) and healing the attacker's Life Points by 25% of the base (disregarding damage modifiers) maximum hit of the hit that triggered it. This does not work on the undead, as they have no "life" to leech.

Enchanted onyx bolts have a 10% chance to trigger the Life leech enchantement. Upon activation the bolt deals 25% more damage and heals the player's Life Points by 25% of the damage potential up to a cap of 2500 Life Points. The healing is calculated before the damage buff occurs and is based on the original damage potential of the attack (e.g. a hit with a potential damage of 1000 damage can deal up to 1250 damage if the effect triggers but will always heal 250 and not 313).

This effect can be triggered with auto attacks and abilities, with abilities consuming one bolt per activation.

Onslaught can trigger the effect, increasing that hit by 25% and healing for 25% of the pre-trigger damage dealt, the recoil is also calculated on the pre-trigger damage. The recoil and healing appear to be calculated at the same moment resulting the damage dealt to the player being equal to the recoil minus the healing. This effectively negates any recoil damage before the 11th hit if the effect triggers. E.g. a 12th hit that would have dealt 10000 damage but triggers the effect instead deals 12500 damage and heals for 2500 but also recoils for 4500 resulting in 2000 damage dealt to the player.

The bolts also have a second passive which works with any ability, including threshold and ultimate abilities, healing the user for an amount equal to 25% of damage dealt. Onyx bolts (e) detail

Enchanted onyx bolts are runite bolts tipped with enchanted onyx. Onyx bolts can be enchanted through the spell Enchant Crossbow Bolt (Onyx) by a player with level 87 Magic. The spell enchants 10 onyx bolts at a time. These bolts are rarely used due to their cost (7,723 coins per bolt) which exceeds the cost of enchanted dragonstone bolts by about 7386 coins, but are frequently high alched.

Multi-target abilities such as ricochet can trigger the effect separately on secondary targets. Abilities that hit multiple times such as rapid fire have a chance to trigger it on each hit separately.

Sacrifice can trigger the effect and will heal according to the increased damage of the ability.

The amount of healing is increased by Prayers and normal equipment damage bonuses but not by Void Knight equipment and Needle Strike's buff. The amount of damage dealt by the effect takes all of the above into consideration.

The chance of the special attack occurring is increased to 12% upon the completion of the elite Seers' Village achievements.

Trivia

 • On 23 February 2010, a bug was leaked in which one could duplicate these bolts but was patched on the same day.
 • These bolts were untradeable when released, but a hidden update in 2007 made them tradeable.
