This guide provides efficient methods for training Crafting from level 1 to 99, taking into consideration both cost and time. This guide is intended for members, though some methods are also available for free-to-play players.

Artisan's outfit

Artisan's bandana.png

The Artisan's outfit is a bonus experience set from Treasure Hunter or Stealing Creation. Each piece will provide 1% more experience in Crafting. Equipping all five pieces will provide a set bonus of an additional 1%, for a total of 6% more experience.

Crafting potion

A three-dose crafting potion can be made at level 42 Herblore from Wergali and Frog spawn or purchased on the Grand Exchange for 1,599. Consuming a dose of the potion offers a temporary, visible +3 boost to Crafting, allowing the player to craft items above their level.

Tool belt items


Many items that are used to train Crafting can be stored on the tool belt, such as a chisel, a needle, a glassblowing pipe, and most moulds. This saves inventory space while training.

Sacred clay needles

A sacred clay needle can be obtained for 20 Stealing Creation points and will grant 24,450 bonus experience in Crafting upon use. Playing organised non-combat Stealing Creation yields around 120,000 bonus experience per hour. For more information, see the Stealing Creation page.

Portable crafters

Portable crafters are extremely useful for any sort of Crafting training - in addition to a 10% experience bonus, they also provide a 10% chance to retain hides, and a 5% chance for gems barring onyx and hydrix, which helps offset the high cost of Crafting training. The crafters also double as a tannery, so placing it next to a bank where applicable means that one can tan hides at the highest rate possible.

Locations for training

Most methods of training rely on having a bank nearby.

Spinning wheels

  • A convenient spinning wheel is on the first floor of Lumbridge Castle, with a bank directly above it on the next floor.
  • Neitiznot houses a spinning wheel just south-east of the bank, though the isle requires completion of The Fremennik Isles quest, and thus level 46 Crafting (boosts can be used).
  • There's a spinning wheel in Seers' Village, just south-west of the bank.
  • There are 2 spinning wheels located in Burthorpe, south of the Gnome Banker, shopkeeper and Mistress Fara. Located right outside of the cow pen.


Pottery ovens and potter's wheel

Both pottery ovens and wheels are used in the creation of urns and other clay products. Note that a portable crafter can function as both a wheel and an oven, which may save a lot of time, as it can be placed immediately next to a bank.

  • Both a potter's wheel and an oven are in a house just south-east of the Varrock East bank.
  • Both a potter's wheel and an oven are on the ground floor of the Crafting Guild, which is itself very close to a bank chest in the clan camp (note entering the guild requires 40 Crafting).
  • Both a potter's wheel and oven can be found west of the druid circle in Burthorpe, south of the bank.
  • Both facilities can be found very close to the bank chest in the Ithell district of Prifddinas. This is the fastest method, however access to the city requires the completion of the Plague's End quest, and thus level 75 Crafting (among many other requirements).


Tanneries can be used by players who wish to tan their own leather. They can be found in a few locations:

  • Portable crafter (the cost is same as regular tanner).
  • A tanner can be found just South of the Varrock West bank.
  • One resides on the first floor of the Crafting Guild.
  • Jack Oval can be found between North Taverley and South Burthorpe, and will tan hides for the player.
  • A tanner lives in a house just a stone's throw North of the Al Kharid bank.
  • The closest tanner to a bank resides in the Ithell district of Prifddinas, however, as mentioned above, this requires completion of the Plague's End quest, and thus level 75 Crafting (among many other requirements).


Furnaces are used in the production of jewellery. Several furnaces exist within a short range of a bank:

Training Crafting

At low levels, both crafting urns and making jewellery offer good experience rates for relatively low costs, or even small profits. Since intervals between gaining levels are fairly small, switching to the most effective method isn't always time-efficient, as obtaining the resources may consume more time than would be saved. While jewellery and urns offers moderate experience at low costs, low-level players who seek faster rates should consider cutting gems. Cutting sapphires costs about −7.66 coins per experience, however it offers rates of up to 200,000 experience per hour, starting at level 20 (in other words, a player could reach level 57 Crafting in an hour from level 20.)

Starting at level 54, players often train Crafting with battlestaves. Water battlestaves offer about −9.8, and thus a good balance of gp/xp for most players. Players who seek faster experience rates can start making green dragonleather bodies at level 63, though these cost about −7.85 per point of experience. Players who are tight on money should instead consider making higher-level urns, such as decorated fishing and cooking urns.

Level 1 - 46+: Glassblowing

Main article: Molten glass

Molten glass can be made on a furnace using a bucket of sand and Soda ash (obtained by cooking seaweed on a range or in a fire). Molten glass can then be made into several useful items with a glassblowing pipe (tool belt will work). Players should visit Fritz the Glassblower on Entrana, who can teach the player how to make molten glass. Training this way is a good strategy for going from level 1-30, as glasswork offers decent experience rates.

Starting at level 46 Crafting, making orbs via glassblowing is an excellent method of training, granting 52.5 experience per orb and on average around 91,000 with no interruption and possibly up to 120,000 experience per hour. Molten glass can be bought for 613 each, and unpowered orbs sell back for 724. Powering orbs is a good way of earning money, as the charged orbs fetch much higher prices (air: 5,831, water: 5,942, earth: 6,854, fire: 5,232).

Players who have completed the Hand in the Sand quest can obtain 84 buckets of sand per day from Bert. Seaweed can either be purchased from the Grand Exchange or from Arhein in Catherby. Players with level 77 Magic who have completed the Lunar Diplomacy quest can use the Superglass Make spell, which can substitute soda ash with raw seaweed or swamp weed, as well as producing about 30% more glass for free.

Level 1-54+

Pottery and jewellery - slow but cheap

Note: The table below assumes the player purchases soft clay from the Grand Exchange. Players can make their own by using clay on a water source, earning 79 (and one Crafting experience) per clay, thus saving 158 per urn. Players can also mine their own clay, which would save 419 per clay, or 838 per urn.

New players can also make bowstrings from flax, as these offer a bit of money, as well as slow Crafting experience.

Level 20+

Fast and expensive - cutting gems

Cutting gems is a fast and expensive way of training Crafting. Gems can be obtained in a few ways, however most players prefer to buy them en masse from the Grand Exchange. A few other ways include:

Below is a table showing experience rates for the different types of gems. All experience/hour is an estimate and this table assumes 4,000 gems are cut per hour. Players considering cutting jade should note that they are crushed far more frequently than other gems; about 21% of the time at level 69 Crafting, and about 8% of the time at level 89. Crushed gems will still yield a small amount of experience, but can no longer be sold for any return.

Enchanting jewellery

Players who are making jewellery should consider enchanting their items as well. Several items (such as the games necklace, ring of duelling, and the amulet of glory) are significantly more valuable after being enchanted, as well as granting some Magic experience.

Stringing amulets

A Ball of wool can be bought on the Grand Exchange for 1067 coins each, or crafted on a spinning wheel out of wool (see above for locations). It provides minimal experience and little or no money, and thus few players prefer to use this method to train.

At level 80 Magic the spell String Jewellery can be cast to automatically string all amulets in a player's inventory. Even with a mud staff this is about twice as expensive as using wool, however it is easier, and also grants some Magic and Crafting experience.

Level 54+

Battlestaves - fast, but requires stockpiling

Crafting elemental battlestaves provides fast experience for its level at a moderate to high cost, though the Grand Exchange can make this method somewhat slower by limiting the purchase of staves to only 1,000 every 4 hours (see below for tips on acquiring battlestaves). Assuming the player has the battlestaves and charged orbs ready, it is possible to craft around 2,600 elemental staves an hour using bank presets.

Unpowered orbs can be made by hand using glassblowing (see below) and then charged, though most players prefer to skip this stage and purchase charged orbs from the Grand Exchange to save time. If a player wishes to stockpile orbs before they can craft the staves, they can make molten glass and blow it into an unpowered orb for a total of 52.5 experience per orb, requiring 46 Crafting. Note that charging the orbs can be very tedious, as the obelisks are difficult to get to.

Collecting staves

  • Players can purchase up to 1,000 battlestaves on the Grand Exchange every four hours, though this limit can be circumvented by asking other players to buy them for you; players can check the forums for others selling them in larger amounts.
  • Players can buy up to 8 battlestaves from Naff in Varrock square. Players who have obtained Varrock armour 1, 2, 3, or 4 have this limit increased to 16, 32, 64, and 80 respectively.
  • After completing Lunar Diplomacy, a stock of 20 can be bought from Baba Yaga in her house on the Lunar Isle.
  • Haf will sell a stock of 20; she can be found by the Elven grimoire in Prifddinas. Her assistant, Lunet, will sell an additional 16 to players who have completed the hard Tirannwn tasks.
  • They can be purchased from the Mage Training Arena, however this is slow and tedious.
  • They can be obtained as a drop from several monsters (see battlestaff for more information).

Level 63+

Dragonhide armour - fast and expensive

Dragonhide armour is crafted from dragon leather, requiring a needle (tool belt will work), and consuming thread. Dragonhide armour offers very high experience rates (typically 300,000+ per hour), though at higher costs. Players who wish to gain cheaper experience should continue using the methods described above. With the use of inventory presets up to 1,600 bodies or shields can be made in an hour. Using a yak can increase this to 1,800 per hour.

If you are level 55 Magic or above, it is possible to High Alch the dragonhide armour. This saves a substantial amount of money in the long run, whilst also granting Magic experience and avoiding the Grand Exchange buy limit.

Harmonium harps - (level 75+)

Playing the harps located within the Ithell district in Prifddinas offers moderate (about 50,000 experience per hour, as well as a little construction experience) rates with little attention required. Level 75 Crafting is required to play the harps, and the Plague's End quest is required to access the city. Playing the harps will yield small amounts of harmonic dust, which is used to craft crystal tools and equipment. Harps will gradually fall out of tune in increments of 10%, granting only half the harmonic dust at 50%, and becoming totally unplayable at 100%; the harp can be tuned again at any time, granting 50 construction experience for every 10% tuned.

Level 89+: flasks and crystal flasks

Players who have level 81 Mining can mine up to 50 blocks of red sandstone a day from the Oo'glog red sandstone mine, and a further 25 from the Sophanem red sandstone mine after completing the Elite desert tasks. The red sandstone can then be made into robust glass (there is no requirement for this step, as it grants no experience) on a robust glass machine. Players with level 89 Crafting can then blow the glass into potion flasks, granting 100 experience per flask. This is also a good source of money, since each flask sells for 6,560 on the Grand Exchange.

Players with level 81 Mining who have completed the Plague's End quest can mine up to 50 crystal-flecked sandstone each day in the crystal-flecked sandstone mine in the Ithell district of Prifddinas. They are crafted in an identical fashion to regular flasks, and give 150 experience each. Players who have level 115 Dungeoneering can mine a further 25 each day in the Edimmu resource dungeon. While they offer more experience than regular flasks, they are considerably lower in price (3,556).

Players often keep the molten glass until Double XP Weekend, to maximise the XP gained.

Other ways to train

Dungeoneering (level 1+) - slow but free

Crafting Salve gloves in Daemonheim from Salve nettles will yield a total of 15 experience each (2.5 from making the cloth, and another 12.5 from crafting the item itself). Salve nettles can be farmed from the available resources or bought from the Smuggler for 420 coins. The completed gloves fetch a return of 84 coins when sold. At higher levels, other salve items can be made, as they yield the same gp/xp rate but are faster to make. Higher levels will also come with higher tiers of cloth.

Alternative choice is Protoleather armour which requires no processing at the spinning wheel, slightly reducing over experience per dungeon but significantly speeding up the progress.

Weaving (Clan Citadel)

Training on the loom in a Clan Citadel (tier 5 or higher) is both fast and free (though very click-intensive). The experience scales to the players level (see this article for more details), with higher levels achieving around 120,000 experience per hour, for a total of about 200,000 experience each week (assuming the player has achieved a fealty of 3). The player can complete their cap every build tick (once a week). Players who have completed over 50% of their cap can also claim some bonus experience from the Quartermaster, which can go towards any of the skills available in the citadel; a player with level 99 Crafting can claim 55,226 bonus experience for doing this.

There is also the Clan cloak fealty reward, although most prefer to use this on harder to obtain skills.

Player-owned port - Level 90+

Main article: Player-owned port

While this is not a consistent method of training, players who have acquired Lacquer from voyages can craft both tradeable and untradeable tier-85 ranged armour, yielding 10,000 experience for the hood, 20,000 for the legs, and 30,000 for the body. Players can also make a Reefwalker's cape and a Leviathan ring from koi scales and pearls respectively, each granting 10,000 experience. Note that this experience is gained in the normal way, so things like bonus experience, skill outfits, the wisdom aura, and other such items will increase the experience gained. Both superior and regular gear grant the same experience, and the tradeable armour is also an excellent source of money.
