Barbarian Fishing with a heavy rod is one of the best methods for gaining experience in the game. This method can be most rewarding if you have the patience to stick with it. Barbarian Fishing is still a very efficient means of raising fishing experience even if you have less than 70 fishing given the very quick rate of catches. ([[Leaping trout]] gives 50 experience, while [[Leaping salmon]] gives 70 experience.) The current unofficial world for Barbarian Fishing is World 116.

This guide describes ways to train Fishing from level 1 to level 99. This guide is for members' training.

Useful Summoning familiars

These familiars will fish along side you, with each different familiar being able to catch certain fish as with the best being the granite lobster, catching up to sharks. If possible, it is highly recommended you have one of these familiars out as the fish they will catch will be more than enough to pay for the cost of the pouch itself.

Sacred Clay

The Sacred clay harpoon, which is a reward for the Stealing Creation activity, can be used to fish Tuna, Swordfish, and Sharks, giving double experience per catch until it degrades after a certain amount of experience is achieved. The sacred clay harpoons' animation takes 50% longer than that of other methods; therefore you can only achieve 2 attempts in the time you could make 3 attempts with an ordinary harpoon or barbarian fishing. If you are using the Sacred Clay harpoon, it is also useful to use either swordfish gloves or shark gloves, depending on which you are fishing. Some may say that it takes too long to get the gloves; however, they have 1000 charges per set of gloves, so they last for quite a while after they are bought. Better fishers might not find so, as they may catch fish fast enough to make the amount of charges per gloves useless. However, most of the time this will not be the case.

NOTE: If you are solely trying to achieve a higher level, do not bother wasting time cooking the fish, because cooking them means a chance of burning them (making them useless), and cooked fish are worth less than raw fish, which, if you sell them in large amounts, can be a great loss, and not to mention that cooking the fish requires time that could have been used to fish. However, some higher level fish (Such as Manta rays and Rocktail) are worth more cooked.

Level 1 to 20

Experience Players may have to swap fishing activities often to maintain optimum experience levels.

To achieve level 5, one will need to catch 37 Shrimps with their Small Fishing Net. If one has lost their net, they can buy a replacement in one of many Fishing shops.

After reaching level 5, one will need a (regular, not fly) Fishing Rod and some Fishing Bait. It is suggested to fish with fishing bait until level 20. At level 10, one will gain the ability to catch Herring. From level 5 to level 20, one will need from 105 to 205 baits.

Catherby is a good place to train fishing and cooking in tandem, as there is a range, a bank, and multiple fishing spots in close proximity.

Money Making

The player cannot make much money during these levels, but cooking and using the successfully cooked fish as food could prove useful.

Level 20 to 30

Experience

Fishing Trout is the easiest way to achieve level 30 Fishing. To fish these you will need a Fly fishing rod and some Feathers. It will take 178 Trout to achieve level 30, so 178 Feathers would be needed.

Money Making

You will not make much money; however, you can make a little bit of profit by selling (raw and/or cooked) Trout.

Level 20 to 99

Experience

Fly fish for Salmon and Trout at Shilo Village. Fly fishing is the easiest experience until leaping sturgeon. Shilo Village is especially convenient for fly fishing due to its proximity to a bank. The completion of the Shilo Village quest is required, however, in order to use this location. A second, less-known spot that actually gives 5,000 to 15,000 more experience per hour than Shilo Village is the river that's west of the Fishing Guild. The downside to this is that one cannot bank their fish but instead sell them to Rasolo, who wanders just north of the area and is usually visible on the Minimap. The unofficial world for fishing in Shilo Village is world 22.

Money Making

If you are going to do this way to 99, you would be better off stopping at 90, then going to Living Rock Caverns, as it is just a little less exp, but a lot more money. The unofficial world for fishing in the Living Rock Cavern is World 84.

Level 30 to 40

Experience

Continue fly fishing Trout and Salmon to achieve level 40 Fishing. You will need to catch 478 trout or 341 salmon, but most likely a mixture of the two.

Money Making

Although you can fish tuna at level 35, they are very slow and you're better off sticking with fly fishing.

Level 40 to 62

Experience

As stated earlier the best experience is fly fishing. It will take you 64,426 Trout or 46,019 Salmon, or a mixture of both to reach level 85.

Money Making

You can now fish Lobster. This is one of the best ways to balance experience and money at these levels. You can earn almost double what you would earn while fishing trout and salmon, while getting two-thirds as much experience. To catch lobster you need to use a lobster pot.

Level 62

Monkfish

Though trout and salmon are the faster experience, monkfish may be best for those who desire profit. At 120xp each, monkfish give more experience per catch, and are caught much faster than sharks. Raw monkfish are currently worth 1,007 coins each on the grand exchange. You can make between 25k and 40k experience per hour. Monkfish fishing demands less attention than trout/salmon fishing drawing most players to this option for training the skill.

These are great fish to catch, up until 85 when you can fish Cavefish or 90 when you can fish Rocktail. These fish have a higher profit.

Level 70 to 99

Barbarian Fishing with a heavy rod is one of the best methods for gaining experience in the game. This method can be most rewarding if you have the patience to stick with it. Barbarian Fishing is still a very efficient means of raising fishing experience even if you have less than 70 fishing given the very quick rate of catches. (Leaping trout gives 60 experience, while Leaping salmon gives 82 experience.) The current unofficial world for Barbarian Fishing is World 116.

For this method, players will need:

As a bonus, fishing in this method also provides a small amount of experience in Agility and Strength.

Players can also bring a Knife and a little bit of bait to start, and use the knife to gut the fish for roe, caviar, and fish offcuts to use as bait. Once the fish are gutted, drop the roe and fish until your inventory is full, at which time you would repeat the process again.

Barbarian Fishing/High Level Alchemy method

A very effective, albeit somewhat costly way of gaining fishing experience without paying much attention utilising Barbarian fishing is by casting High Level Alchemy on the fish while catching them, without slowing down the fishing process whatsoever and preventing the need to drop fish.

The most effective way to do this is by having the first two inventory slots filled, and having the caught fish appear in the third inventory slot. Now, on the normal spellbook , customise the spellbook so that only miscellaneous spells are shown and click the button that sorts the spells by the magic level required to use them. This will mean that if you place your cursor on the bottom right hand corner of the High Level Alchemy spell icon, it will automatically be over the third inventory slot and you will be able to alchemise the fish as they appear in your inventory without moving the mouse. Now, to ensure that you do not have to move the mouse as you fish at all, you must be playing on resizeable game window mode and the window must be very narrow, so that you can adjust your camera to cause the fishing spot to be positioned directly underneath the third slot in your inventory, which you will be able to see, as the inventory tab is transparent on resizable window mode. Place the cursor on the bottom right hand corner of the High Level Alchemy icon, and hit F4 to close the magic tab. Click on the fishing spot (without having to move the mouse) and hit F4 again to bring up the magic tab and click again on the High Level Alchemy icon, again, without having to move the mouse. Now, when a fish is caught, click again, still without moving the mouse and the fish will be alchemised and without delay press F1 and click the fishing spot again, without needing to move the mouse. After a short delay, the magic tab will be brought up again and you will be able to click the High Level Alchemy icon and wait for another fish to appear in the third slot in your inventory and repeat this process again. Therefore, the keyboard/mouse commands you will be entering will be: Left mouse button, F1, Left mouse button, *1, Left mouse button, *2 (and repeat); where *1 represents waiting the delay waiting for the magic tab to appear and *2 represents the delay waiting for the fish to be caught. As it is difficult to click without moving the mouse unless you have a laptop mouse, it is recommended that you use mousekeys, so all processes will be able to be done on the keyboard. Although sounding complicated, the whole process should only take 3 seconds (5 game ticks; 0.6*5=3) and is very easy to use after just five to ten minutes of practice. Remember, you must move the mouse in order to locate the next fishing spot when the one you are using moves, but you will not need to while fishing.

This method will gain you 65k+ fishing experience an hour (reaching up to 72k an hour at level 99 with a Granite lobster familiar) as well as 60k+ magic experience an hour. However it will lose you the price of a nature rune minus the average High Level Alchemy value of the fish, which is 30gp (as the three values are 15, 30 and 45 gp respectively) per fish, which will be about 210k gp an hour. Nevertheless, there are countless money making methods that make well over 210k an hour, so this is not a great loss.

This method mentioned above works can be done with any fishing spot, except Barbarian fishing is the most notable, as it is the fastest experience in the game for fishing and the fish obtained are not valuable, therefore it is illogical to use any other spot, unless your fishing level is too low.

An advantage to this method is that it can be done with a separate window next to it, so that you can read/watch videos while fishing, which is enhanced by the fact that this method using a very narrow window, leaving a lot of screen space left over.

The two fastest ways to fish using this method is to fish a single fish, drop it right away, then fish another one and repeat or by using the high level alchemy method mentioned above.

Level 76

Sharks deserve some small mention as one of the most popular money making fish to catch. Despite this, sharks are a very poor training method, giving about half the xp/hr of comparable methods such as monkfish or cavefish, with a negligible increase in profit. Fishing sharks is not recommended.

Level 90 to 99

Rocktail fishing is one of the best ways of gaining experience. One can gain roughly 40,000 experience per hour depending on the fishing level you are. Rocktails grant 380 experience per catch, the highest experience per fish in-game. This is only recommended if you are a reasonably high-level player and are able to withstand (level-120 and 140) enemies attacking you such as Living rock protector and Living rock striker; although they are weak and very inaccurate, they can be annoying.

Rocktail detail

For this method of fishing, players need the following:

Tips:

  • When fishing here, make sure you are in a safe spot by trapping the monsters in order to fish without having to kill the enemy and make it spawn next to you.
  • Sticking to the west side of the cave will help you immensely because most rocktail-baiting spots are located there
  • Fish in World 84, as many other players are here, and you will hardly ever get attacked. This is not recommended on an old/laggy computer, as it can "lag" you to death, meaning you're lagging too much and aren't able to run from the monster's attacks. It's safe to bring an item such as an Ectophial or Teleport Tablet so you can get out quickly if low on Life Points. Another option is to wear a Ring of Life in case you die while being attacked by the Living Rock Strikers and Protectors. If World 84 is too laggy, you may wish to try either of the other unofficial worlds, World 88 or World 77.
  • The Living Rock creatures are not aggressive unless you run right next to them, so if you can stay at least 1 square away from them, you will be decently safe.

The Fish Flingers Distraction and Diversion is a very easy and fast way to gain large amounts of experience. The experience rewards decrease slightly as level increases, but for an experienced player, or a player with assistance in the calls from others can easily gain 15 to 20k experience per game.
