a player with good ranged training equipment for medium leveled players.

The following guide gives advice on training the Ranged skill from levels 1-99. The ranged combat skill is highly useful as it gives the player the ability to attack from long ranges with projectiles. This can allow a player to avoid all damage in combat.

Equipment for Ranged Attack Bonus

Note: If you want to use Void Equipment to range, use the full set (Void Ranger helm/Gloves/Top/Robe), otherwise the set is useless.

Headgear

Requirement level Item Range attack bonus Degrading
Level 40 Sacred clay coif +2 Yes (Only the extra experience gain, the coif itself does not degrade and will still give the bonus)
Level 40 Spined helm +6 No (Requires The Fremennik Trials completion)
Level 40 Robin Hood hat +8 No
Level 42 Void ranger helm +0 1 No (requires void robe, void gloves, void top)
Level 30 Snakeskin Bandana +4 No
Level 1^ Archer helm (after The Fremennik Trials) +6 No
Level 70 Blessed dragonhide coifs +7 No
Level 70 Karil's coif +3 Yes
Level 70 (70 defence) Armadyl helmet +10 No
Level 78 (20 for corrupt) Morrigan's coif +13 Yes (not recommended due to time limit)

1. When combined with the whole set, it gives +10% to Ranged Attack and +10% to maximum damage with Ranged.

^ Requires 45 Defence and 1 Ranged along with the quest, The Fremennik Trials.

Body

Requirement level Item Range attack bonus Degrading
Level 42 Void knight top +0 No (requires void robe, void gloves, ranger helm)

Level 60 Red d'hide body +25 No

Level 70 Karil's leathertop +30 Yes
Level 70 Armadyl chestplate +33 No
Level 78 (20 for corrupt) Morrigan's leather body +36 Yes (not recommended)

Level 60 Red d'hide chaps +14 No
Level 70 Black d'hide chaps +17 No
Level 70 Karil's leatherskirt +17 Yes
Level 70 Armadyl chainskirt +20 No
Level 78 (20 for corrupt) Morrigan's leather chaps +23 Yes (not recommended)

Shields

Any of these shields are highly recommended especially if using thrown items such as darts and knives, or when using a crossbow. Note that if you have not done the required quests for these items you can use an anti-dragonfire shield for the defence bonuses. You also use shields like spirit shields - which give no negative attack bonuses - for the same effect.

A highly recommended shield to use is the void deflector, with a dragonhide body.

Requirement level Item Range attack bonus Degrading
Level 1 Book of Balance +4 No
Level 1 Book of Law +6 No
Level 1 Unholy Book +8 No
Level 42 Void Deflector +0 (15 - 30+ depending on what d'hide body you wear) Also requires Void Helm, Legs, and Gloves No

Boots

Boots are greatly overlooked when training Ranged. Many people wear their Climbing boots or Dragon boots, but purchasing Snakeskin boots for the extra +3 Ranged attack bonus is worth it.

Requirement level Item Range attack bonus Degrading
Level 25 (+25 def) frog-leather boots +2 No
Level 30 (+30 def) Snakeskin boots +3 No
Level 40 Ranger boots +8 (Not recommended, very expensive) No

Rings

Some people may wish to wear a Ring of wealth, which is understandable, but those that wish to wear void armour may want to go for the Ranged attack bonus rings (since the void set does not have any ranged attack bonuses).

Requirement level Item Range attack bonus Degrading
Level 1 (rank 100+ at Mobilising Armies) Ruby ring (i) +3 No
Level 1 Archers' ring +4 No
Level 1 (rank 100+ at Mobilising Armies) Diamond ring (i) +4 No

Recommended Weapons

The following table shows you what the best advised equipment is to train ranging. For ammunition its recommended you use iron or steel arrows and use Ava's attractor or accumulator. Bronze knives are strongly recommended over any other knife due to lower cost and better availability on the Grand Exchange.

Requirement Level Weapon Ranged attack bonus Ammunition Alternatives

Level 61 Rune crossbow +90 Bronze bolts to Runite bolts Zanik's crossbow, Bronze knife, Iron knife, Steel knife

Some users may be tempted to buy a Dark bow at level 60 but it isn't recommended to train with, as its slow attack speed may allow other players to steal your kills.

The Crystal bow (level 70 range and 50 agility) costs a lot of money initially, but offers the greatest experience of all other than cannoning and red chinchompas. The price also decreases each time the bow is recharged, from a starting price of 900k (360 coins per shot) to 180k (72 coins per shot).

Bone bolts can only be used with the Dorgeshuun crossbow or Zanik's crossbow. Zanik's crossbow requires The Chosen Commander.

If you have the required 55 Slayer for broad-tipped bolts, use them, as they are cheaper than adamant bolts, but have the same ranged strength bonus.

Red Chinchompa use guide

Locations

Inventory

Optional, recommended in Chaos Tunnels and Ape Atoll Dungeon

Armour

Experience gain

Red chinchompas are undoubtedly the fastest ranged experience within the game, and second only to using the dwarf multicannon in cost. The 2nd most economical location* for training is the Ape Atoll Dungeon. The ranged experience you receive depends upon your armour, your ranged level, and whether or not you are using ranging potions. An average setup will provide you with the following estimated experience per hour.

  • 85 = 225-230k xp each hour
  • 86 = 230-235k xp each hour
  • 87 = 235-240k xp each hour
  • 88 = 240-245k xp each hour
  • 89 = 245-250k xp each hour
  • 90 = 250-255k xp each hour
  • 91 = 255-260k xp each hour
  • 92 = 260-265k xp each hour
  • 93 = 265-270k xp each hour
  • 94 = 270-275k xp each hour
  • 95 = 275-280k xp each hour
  • 96 = 280-285k xp each hour
  • 97 = 285-290k xp each hour
  • 98 = 290-295k xp each hour
  • 99 = 295-300k xp each hour

*Although Chinning Soul Wars is a fair bit slower than Chinning at the Ape Atoll Dungeon or on Mummies, it seems that not only the xp per Red Chinchompa ratio is higher, but you can also choose to spend the Zeal on range xp which makes this less costly and still gives amongst the greatest range xp possible in game.

Chinchompa use guide

Locations

  • Skeletons in Ape Atoll Dungeon (Monkey Madness required to a certain extent)
  • Mummies in the Chaos Tunnels
  • Other Players in Soul Wars
  • NOTE: If going to Ape Atoll dungeon, when you kill the skeletons, you generally get bones starting to pile up on each other. You do not want this as your spawns will be slow. Pick the bones up and spread them out so that one bone is on its own spot. This will spawn all bones at same time rather than just one bone at a time. Also go to a populated world, which will give you faster spawns.
  • NOTE: Although Mummies in the Chaos Tunnels aren't as fast as Skeletons in Ape Atoll Dungeon, it saves you money while you are in there. Considering the Rune Scimitars, Rune Sq Shields, and Ancient Staffs make up the amount of money you spend on Prayer Potions, or even the cost of the Red Chinchompas if you are lucky. (does not cover both costs at the same time).
  • NOTE: Using Red Chinchompas at Soul Wars can be very difficult as for it to be effective you will need a few requirements. First of all, a busy world - pretty useless trying to range 5 people when 3 of them are out of reach. Having a Soul Wars Clan to help take over both graveyards helps as the only real effective spot is outside the opponent's spawn area (near their avatar) as if they have a grave, less will spawn and there will be more high levels attacking you. Standing next to where your opponent comes out of the barrier and throwing Chinchompas on oncoming victims is effective, however when they run you will run after them which is not desired. The best thing to do is to stand right where everyone comes out of the barrier - so most people won't see you - and chin a few people until someone decides to stand next to you and attack you. From there having Auto Retaliate ON is highly recommended as most people won't run. This method does involve taking a lot of damage so do always stock up on bandages and try to wear the best armour you can. For this reason Armadyl is recommended over Void. P.S: If sometimes you find you throw a Chinchompa at someone, it explodes but causes no damage symbol to appear, be happy, it simply mean that other people are taking the damage for them, this make it easier to target just one person. *Remember to always use the Attack Style "Short Fuse" for optimal results. It is also beneficial to use the soul split prayer from the Ancient Curses prayer book to maximize survival time to increase experience gain.

Cannon use guide

Locations

  • Slayer tasks (e.g. Dagannoths, Kalphite soldiers, and Black Demons)
  • Multi-combat zones with safe spots
  • NOTE: While the Black Demons are NOT particularly cost-effective for range training (as compared to the green dragons, which produce an exorbitant profit), many of their locations -particularly in the Taverley Dungeon- go quite unnoticed by most players as potentially some of the quickest experience givers in the game. Taverley, for example, produces a fire rate almost double that typically found in the Green Dragons area near Clan Wars and has the added bonus of not requiring the Anti-Dragon Shield, antifire potions , or super antifire potions . However, the Black Demons WILL hit rapidly, heavily, and accurately when you must leave your safe spot, so lower levels must be wary to either activate Protect from Melee or to ensure their health and armour are strong enough to defend them very briefly to reload the cannon. When cannoning Black Demons, you may wish to bring prayer potions so you can continue to use Protect from Melee during extended trips.

Restrictions

The cannon can not be set up in the following locations:

Inventory

  • Cannon base, Cannon stand, Cannon barrels, Cannon furnace and Cannonballs.
  • Food, depending on where you are using the cannon.
  • Prayer potions, if prayer is needed in the location.
  • Ranging potions if you want to boost your Range level. Note that the cannon's accuracy is affected by your Range level and the attack style you are using. Also ranging level will only increase cannon accuracy if you wield a ranged weapon. Please note that the cannon's accuracy will not be affected as heavily as your own range stats.
