Reason: Smithing was reworked in an update released 07 January 2019.
You can help improve this page by editing it.

Members have the advantage of access to more materials for training Smithing than free players. With the right methods and a bit of increased training time, members are able to make money while smithing. Members also have access to areas with less of a distance between the furnace and the bank, such as Port Phasmatys and the Trahaearn section of Prifddinas. For a table showing profits versus experience made by smithing certain items, see Smithing/Smithing tables. Although some methods are cheaper than others, smithing is generally either very expensive or very slow, depending on whether you buy or collect your materials.

Useful Items[]

Blacksmith's outfit[]

Blacksmith's outfit equipped

Wearing components of the Blacksmith's outfit gives a percentage increase in the amount of Smithing experience gained. There are five pieces in the set: the headwear, chestpiece, legwear, gloves, and boots. Components of the Blacksmith's outfit can be won from Treasure Hunter. It is also a possible reward at the Artisans Workshop. If all pieces of the set are worn, the player gains an additional set bonus of 1% bonus experience.

Urns[]

Strong smelting urn

Urns can be used to gain additional Smithing experience while training. When held in the inventory, urns are filled as the player smelts ore. Only base experience gains count towards filling the urn. Full urns can be teleported away to receive additional experience, equivalent to 20% of the Smithing experience gained while filling the urn. Only one urn is filled at a time, though players may own up to a total of 10 full urns. If a player owns 10 full smithing urns they must teleport at least 1 away before they can fill more urns. Urns are only tradeable in their (nr), non-runed, forms. In order to use a smelting urn, the player must add an fire rune to it. This makes the urn untradeable and stackable.

Perfect juju smithing potions[]

Perfect juju smithing potion detail

When the perfect juju smithing potion's effect is active, the player has a 10% chance of finding a corrupted ore. Each dose of the perfect juju smithing potion lasts for 1 hour. The potion can be bought from the Grand Exchange or created by adding harmony moss (costing 4,060 gp) to a juju hunter potion (3) (costing 10,056 gp) with level 82 Herblore.

Hammer-trons/augmented crystal hammers[]

Augmentor detail

Players with at least level 22 Invention can discover how to create Hammer-trons. This also unlocks the ability to create augmented crystal hammers by using augmentors on crystal hammers. A tool gizmo may be added to an augmented hammer to give it perks. The following perks may be useful to players training Smithing:

Name Effect Number of ranks
Rapid
Rapid
Has a 5% chance per rank to carry out work at a faster pace. 3
Tinker
Tinker
Has a 5% chance per rank to carry out higher quality work, awarding an extra 25% XP 3
Breakdown
Breakdown
Has a 20% chance per rank of automatically disassembling items produced. 5
Wise
Wise
When equipped, +1% per rank additional experience, up to 50,000 XP per day. 3

To use an augmented hammer's perks, the player must have charges in their charge pack. Use of an augmented crystal hammer costs at most 0.31 divine charges from the player’s charge pack per second. This cost can be reduced by researching charge drain improvements or by adding the efficient perk to the item.

Brawling gloves (Smithing)[]

Smithing brawling gloves, obtainable from revenants, the Chaos Elemental and rare drop table provides a steady source of bonus Smithing experienced based on "charges". In non-wilderness areas, the gloves provide an additional 50% experience, but when used anywhere at or above level 47 Wilderness, the gloves give an additional 300% bonus experience instead.

Even though they will conflict with the blacksmith set, they still provide more experience. As the gloves are dependent on charges, they are best used with Rune ceremonial swords or dragonfire shields for the most experience (the latter can be done in the Wilderness for very high experience rates, but extremely risky); should either option be unfeasible, protean bars can be used instead.

Portable forges[]

The Portable forge are extremely useful when training Smithing, as they provide a 5% chance to create an additional bar upon smelting, or 10% chance to keep a bar upon using it for smithing in addition to a flat 10% experience increase when training (with the exception of corrupted ore). The forges are incredibly useful for any sort of bar smithing or corrupted ore smelting due to its convenience.

Other useful items[]

Level 1-30: Iron 2h swords[]

There are various methods to get level 1-29 in Smithing. The fastest method is to complete the quest The Knight's Sword. Then train to level 30 by smithing iron 2h swords.

For efficiency's sake, you might want to consider using rings of forging, which give you a 100% iron smelting rate for 140 ores. You can get them from the Grand Exchange or craft them by enchanting a ruby ring with Lvl-3 Enchant, which requires Level 49 Magic.

Level 30-40[]

Expensive/fast method: iron ingot III[]

Smith iron burial armor with iron ingot III in the Artisans Workshop. You should get about 90K experience per hour. You can get 10% bonus experience by making the piece of equipment Suak calls out but you will no longer be able to AFK. In total, you need 201 ingots to get to level 45 if you don't get any bonus experience.

Cheap/slow method smelting steel bars[]

Smelt steel bars in a location that has a furnace and a bank close to each other such as Edgeville or Port Phasmatys. Access to the Edgeville furnace requires completion of the easy Varrock achievements. Access to the Port Phasmatys furnace requires either two ecto-tokens and a ghostspeak amulet or completion of the Ghost Ahoy quest. In total, you should need 1,364 iron ores and 2,723 coal. This method is very slow, yielding 14-16K experience per hour, but by re-selling the bars on the GE, you will have little to no money loss.

Level 40-45[]

Expensive/fast method: smithing Iron Ingot III[]

Continue to smith iron equipment with Iron ingot III in the Artisans Workshop as you did from levels 30-40.

Cheap/slow method: Smelting gold bars wearing goldsmith gauntlets[]

Smelt gold bars wearing the goldsmith gauntlets from Family Crest. This can be done until level 99 and yields around 68,000 experience per hour.

Alternative: Superheating gold bars[]

Smelt gold bars by using the Superheat Item spell on gold ores. While this costs more money it is significantly faster smithing experience while providing magic experience as well.

Level 45-60[]

Expensive/fast method: Smithing steel ingot III[]

Smith steel equipment with steel ingot III in the Artisans Workshop. You should get about 150K experience per hour. You can get 10% bonus experience by making a specific type of equipment but you will no longer be able to AFK. In total, you need 600 ingots to get to level 60 if you don't get any bonus experience.

Level 60-70[]

Expensive/fast method: Smithing mithril ingot III[]

Smith mithril equipment with mithril ingot III in the Artisans Workshop. You should get about 170K experience per hour. You can get 10% bonus experience by making a specific type of equipment but you will no longer be able to AFK. In total you need 1,149 ingots to get to level 70 if you don't get any bonus experience.

Alternative: Superheating gold bars[]

Smelt gold bars by using the Superheat Item spell on gold ores. While this costs more money it is significantly faster smithing experience while providing magic experience as well.

Level 70-88/89[]

Expensive/fast method: Smithing adamant ingot III[]

Smith adamant equipment with adamant ingot III in the Artisans Workshop. You should get about 220K experience per hour. You can get 10% bonus experience by making a specific type of equipment but you will no longer be able to AFK. In total, you need 6,423 ingots to get to level 88 if you don't get any bonus experience.

It will yield approximately 158K Smithing experience per hour and 145K Magic experience per hour at a rate of 35 seconds per inventory.

Alternative 2: Smithing Adamant Dart Tips[]

Adamant Bars can be bought on the Grand Exchange and smithed into dart tips at level 74 and after The Tourist Trap quest, resulting in roughly 100K experience per hour and no or low loss if using a portable and selling the tips.

Alternative 3: Superheating adamant bars[]

Smelt adamant bars by using the Superheat Item spell. Providing 80,000-90,000 experience per hour and some profit.

See Money making guide/Superheating adamantite ore to get a better idea of optimal strategies and expected profit.

Level 88/89-99[]

Expensive/fast method: Smithing adamant ingot III[]

Smith adamant equipment with Adamant ingot III in the Artisans Workshop. You should get about 220,000 experience per hour. An additional 10% bonus experience can be obtained by making a specific type of equipment, but this means players must constantly check to see when the equipment changes. The Falador shield 4 gives a 5% experience bonus in the Artisans Workshop. In total, you need 15,227 ingots to get to level 99 if you don't get any bonus experience.

Alternative 1: Smithing adamant platebodies

Smith adamant platebodies at an anvil close to a bank. This gives about 360,000 experience per hour using bank presets and a pack yak beast of burden. This method has a faster experience rate but is not AFK. You need to smith 27,676 Adamant platebodies to get to level 99 if you don't have any bonus experience.

Alternative 2: Ceremonial swords

Ceremonial swords provide more experience if created properly, but cost much more and breaking the sword will not yield any experience. Refer to here for more details.

Cheap/slow method: Smelting gold bars wearing goldsmith gauntlets[]

Smelt gold bars wearing the goldsmith gauntlets from Family Crest. This can be done until level 99 and yields around 68,000 experience per hour.

Alternative 1: Superheating gold bars[]

Smelt gold bars by using the Superheat Item spell on gold ores. While this costs money, it is significantly faster smithing experience than smelting at a furnace and provides magic experience as well.

Alternative 2: Superheating rune bars[]

Smelt rune bars by using the Superheat Item spell. This provides up to 110,000 experience per hour with additional profit.

See Money making guide/Superheating runite ore to get a better idea of optimal strategies and expected profit.

Alternative 3: Smelting corrupted ore[]

You can get the ores by mining Seren stones (requiring 89 mining) or by opening the crystal chest located with the Iorwerth Clan (you get it more often during the Iorwerth Voice of Seren). Smelt corrupted ore at any furnace. This yields about 220,000 experience per hour. If this is done when the Voice of Seren is active, players will have a 25% chance of obtaining swamp tar per ore; no products are obtained otherwise. Players can smelt around 1,500 corrupted ore an hour. As 150 experience is gained each time that a corrupted ore is smelted, 225,000 Smithing experience can be gained in an hour of smelting corrupted ore, but this doesn't take the time needed to get the ores into consideration. Using the Superheat spell, players can gain 375,000 Smithing experience and 132,500 Magic experience an hour. Experience is not affected by the Voice of Seren when using Superheat Item but it is affected when using Superheat Form, granting 180 experience per ore.

Free alternatives[]

These are some alternative methods that are free or could even yield profit.

Cannonball method[]

Cannonballs are slow and give less experience than any other steel smithing (roughly 13,000 experience/hour). They used to be frequently made since they used to turn a significant profit; however, there are better money makers in game now than there used to be. While wearing Morytania legs 2 or higher, the speed of making cannonballs in Port Phasmatys furnace is doubled so it is possible to reach around 25-28k experience per hour and more profit.

Clan Citadels[]

The Clan Citadel can offer a Furnace (provided that the clan the player is in has one), which provides constant and free Smithing experience while doing their cap rate. As players maximise their caps every week to a fealty rank of 3, they will get an extra experience bonus when skilling in the citadel. Depending on the player's fealty rank and cap limit, they can reach to upwards of 342k Smithing experience per week, more with various bonuses. However, the Furnace requires charcoal from the Kiln and regular/precious ore from the Mine in order to function properly.

Protean bars[]

Protean bars, obtainable from Treasure Hunter, are a free source of Smithing experience. While the time it takes to "smelt" the bars is considerably slow, it does provide a large amount of experience at no cost to the player (barring the use of any portable forges).

Players can process around 750 bars per hour, which means anywhere from 56,250 to 337,500 experience can be gained per hour depending on the player's Smithing level. However, it is advised to save these bars until 85 Smithing, as the bars will give the most experience from that level onwards.

These bars are especially useful in the Wilderness when paired with Smithing brawling gloves at the lever to the Mage Arena, as the brawling gloves will provide the most bonus experience after level 50 Wilderness. With a Smithing level of 85 and higher, the brawling gloves and the remaining blacksmith equipment for the empty slots, the bars can yield over 800,000 experience per hour. However, this is typically unfeasible given the rarity of the brawling gloves.

Completing quests[]

Some quests grant Smithing experience. Refer to the main article for more details.
