Revision as of 07:42, 3 December 2010
- See also: Free-to-play Melee training.
This melee training guide will help players train all melee combat skills from 1 to 99. The guide will explain the best monsters to kill at your level, along with providing the advantages and disadvantages of training on each monster. This guide is written upon the basis that you train all combat skills up to the given level.
The levels below refer to individual combat stat levels, not to the overall combat level of the player.
Training Tips
- Use the best weapons available.
- It is not suggested that you use poisoned weapons. Though it helps you kill enemies faster, damage from poison gives NO EXP, and many of the weapons that can be poisoned are not very good for training.
- Wear items that give high offensive and high strength bonus items, e.g.: Rune defender, Dragonfire shield, Bandos chestplate, etc.
- Wear a specific barrows set like guthan's to prolong trips, when fighting higher levelled monsters. Bunyips (68 summoning) are also commonly used because of their ability to heal players even in Single-Combat areas.
- For prolonged trips use the Excalibur's Special attack because this boosts a player's Defence level temporarily or the Enhanced Excalibur that will also heal you.
- Using Super sets is a more expensive way to prolong trips. If on the curse prayerbook it is advised to use the Berserker prayer (59 prayer required) to lengthen the usefulness of potions.
- An alternative to normal training is to use either Pest Control or Soul Wars. Note: Pest Control gives only half the normal amount of xp for damage done.
- Wear a Ring of Wealth, it will improve your odds for rare drops and will help pay for food, potions, according to the RuneScape main website.
- Use fast weapons like scimitars or an Abyssal Whip, while two handers or longswords hit harder the scimitar hits more often for better xp over time.
- Also, there is one more equiped item that helps out a great deal when fighting "non-living" mosters. This is the salve amulet obtained from the haunted mine quest.
Level 1 to 15
Goblins near Lumbridge
Advantages
- Many goblins wandering around.
- Fly-fishing spots nearby can be used for food.
- There is a general store nearby where drops can be sold.
- May drop a level one clue scroll to give bonus rewards.
- May drop a champions scroll too, which can be used later for Champions Challenge.
Disadvantages
- Often crowded.
- Low coin drops.
Tips
- Goblins sometimes drop goblin mail. You may choose to save three of these as they are part of the Goblin Diplomacy quest.
- There is a broken-down shack near the fishing area. Inside this shack is an iron dagger respawn.
Cows or Undead Cows
Advantages
Disadvantages
- Usually crowded.
Chickens all over RuneScape
Advantages
- Chickens never inflict damage, so no food is needed.
- Lots of bones and raw chicken are dropped, which players can use to train Prayer and Cooking, respectively.
- Chickens drop feathers, which can be used for Fishing and Fletching, or can be sold to other players.
Disadvantages
- The area may be crowded.
- Very low LP means that training at higher levels is less efficient.
Tips
- Collect bones, as they are worth 266 coins, which you could sell for 7448 coins for each inventory.
Men or Women
Advantages
- They are found in most cities in RuneScape.
- They do not hit very often.
- Their life points are high for their level.
- They always drop bones.
- They have decent drops for beginners, including grimy herbs and level one clue scrolls.
Disadvantages
- May be spread out to make training difficult.
Tips
- There is a house to the north of the bank in Edgeville with a half-dozen men inside.
Level 15 to 30
By this point, players should have Steel armour and a Steel weapon, Black armour, or Mithril armour for higher defence. It is recommended to still stick with killing lower levelled NPCs, but if players can handle more of a challenge then the following monsters can be trained on.
Crawling Hands
Located in Morytania Slayer Tower
Advantages
- They are low levelled with good drops. Examples are coloured gloves, rings, and even (extremely rarely) dragon spears.
Disadvantages
- Slayer level 5 and Priest in Peril quest required.
Barbarians
Located in Gunnarsgrunn
Advantages
- They are in a multi-combat area, so players can attack a barbarian that another player is attacking, or attack many barbarians at once.
- Cooked meat respawns in the long hall, along with beer.
- Can be safe-spotted with a halberd by standing behind a stool in the longhall.
- You can safe spot range them and mage them too.
Disadvantages
- They vary in level and some attack with range.
- This area is often crowded.
Al Kharid Warriors
Found in the Al Kharid palace
Advantages
- They are in a multi-combat area, so when players attack any warrior, all other warriors will immediately try to attack the player, resulting in fast experience.
Disadvantages
- May be crowded.
- If players cannot handle the onslaught of level 9 warriors, this may not be a good training spot.
Minotaurs
Found in the 1st level of the Stronghold of Security
Advantages
- Frequent iron arrow drops.
Disadvantages
- Low life points, meaning slower experience.
Tips
- Stick with the level 12 ones at first. There are level 27 Minotaurs further in the Stronghold. None of them are aggressive.
- Minotaurs commonly drop iron arrows, around 7 to 14 at a time.
Rock Crabs
Located in the northern Fremennik Province
Advantages
- Multi-combat area, meaning many crabs can attack the player at once.
- Relatively high lifepoints (500).
- They are aggressive.
- Hits are very rare.
- For low levels, it's quite lucrative to collect the (noted) seaweed (1-5) dropped by the crabs, providing an additional profit along with training.
Disadvantages
- Almost always crowded.
- Other players' Dwarf multicannons may slow down your training.
Tips
- Completion of Fremennik Trials quest is recommended for a better training area
Chaos Druids
Located in Taverley Dungeon and the Tower near Ardougne
Advantages
- They drop herbs very often.
- They have low defence.
- They spend most of their time casting spells, and hit rarely.
- Excellent Drops:100k to 200k if you are lucky.
- They can drop dragon spears (this is a very rare drop, though).
Disadvantages
- Can be crowded.
- They use magic to bind and weaken players.
- The Chaos Druid Tower requires 46 Thieving to enter.
- Taverley Dungeon is far from a bank.
- Yanille agility dungeon requires 33 Agility to get to the level 13 chaos druids.
- It is still possible for a Revenant that may pose a threat enter the area.
Tips
- They can also be fought in the Edgeville Dungeon wilderness area, which is a more recommended area as it is closer to a bank. (NOTE: Beware of Revenants even if they rarely come here)
Guards
found at the stalls of East Ardougne
Advantages
- Right next to baker's stalls (steal cakes and bread for food).
- Close to a bank.
- Players tend to drop the stolen goods from the stalls (silk, cakes, loaves of bread) on the floor
Disadvantages
- Stealing from baker's stalls requires 5 thieving. (It is highly recommended to train to level 5 as it is very easy and definitely worth it.)
- Getting caught while stealing can lead to unwanted encounters with higher levelled NPCs(stealing from baker's stall only draws guards).
Monks
west of Edgeville in the Monastery
Advantages
- Talk to one of the monks and they heal you.
- Easy kill, no high hits.
Disadvantages
- Only bones for drops.
Thugs
In the Edgeville dungeon, there are level 10 thugs that are aggressive. They give 130 experience.
Advantages
- They are aggressive, so no need to click to fight.
Disadvantages
- Relatively poor drops
Tips
- Switching worlds after 6-7 minutes is required as the Thugs will lose interest in you after a while.
Level 30 to 45
Players should make sure they are well prepared with food before training on any of these monsters.
Hill Giants
Located in Edgeville dungeon, or west of Tree Gnome Stronghold
Advantages
- Hill giants always drop big bones, for either selling for 203 or training prayer.
- They also drop limpwurt root used in herblore.
- Safespots are present for those using a halberd.
Disadvantages
- For level 35s ( and below), hill giants may be a bit harder to kill, make sure you prepare a lot of food.
- They may be crowded.
- The Hill Giants west of The Tree Gnome Stronghold are not very close to a bank but if you have done the Tree Gnome Village quest you can use the spirit tree to travel from the tree gnome village to GE.
Hobgoblins
Found in many places
Advantages
- Drops Limpwurt roots, and other good drops.
- Low defence.
- Drops a Champion Challenge Scroll.
Disadvantages
- They have good accuracy and can damage you frequently.
Earth Warriors
found in the Chaos Tunnels or the wilderness portion of the Edgeville Dungeon
Advantages
- They have decent drops.
- The area is usually not crowded.
- They may drop a Champion's scroll.
- They are aggressive.
Disadvantages
- You must go through the Wilderness to reach them, so you run the risk of being attacked by Revenants.
- The warriors in the Chaos tunnels, despite not actually being in the Wilderness, are in a multi-combat area, so you will be attacked by several warriors at a time.
- There is an agility obstacle before the wilderness location.
- Revenants occasionally pass through the wilderness portion of the Edgeville Dungeon (Only about 1-2 per hour, they will go in a straight line so you can avoid being attacked by keeping to the side).
Zombies or Skeletons
found in many places
Advantages
- They have decent drops.
- They are in an uncrowded area.
- They both may drop separate Champion's scroll.
- They are undead, so salve amulets will work.
Disadvantages
- They are not very good experience.
- Skeletons are accurate with their attacks, take note of those with level 25.
- Lower levels will most likely need to bring food.
Level 45 to 55
Make sure to bring food and put auto-retaliate on so you will automatically attack the monsters.
Rock crabs
Located at Rellekka
Advantages:
- They respawn quickly.
- They are a good low level source of Gold Charms.
- They have 500 life points at only level 13.
- They rarely hit.
- Easy to get to if you go to Keldagrim and walk outside into the area east of Rellekka.
Disadvantages:
- Almost always crowded. (Players may want to visit French servers, due to less players)
- It is a multi-combat area. Dwarf Cannons can remove any chance of getting experience.
Flesh Crawlers
Located in the Stronghold of Security
Advantages:
- Aggressive for 15 or 20 minutes.
- They only have a maximum hit of 16.
- Excellent drops: Players can earn 100k or more in a single trip.
- They drop fire and nature runes frequently, so you can alchemise or superheat some of the drops for free magic experience.
- They can drop a part of the Skull Sceptre.
Disadvantages:
- Although the Flesh Crawlers are quick experience, they only have 250 life points, which means only 100 experience per kill.
- They can hit quite frequently if players do not wear good armour.
- There are aggressive zombies nearby.
- A lot of people train at the Flesh Crawlers, leading to extreme crowding.
Tips:
- Since the Flesh Crawlers will only be aggressive for a limited time, leave the area and go to the next nearest area where there are more Flesh Crawlers. By doing this, players can continually switch back and forth between areas, so they will always attack you. Do not go up any ladder you find, as you will be transported back to the starting area of the level.
Level 30 Zombies
Located In Level 2 of Stronghold Of Security
Advantages:
- Not as crowded as flesh crawlers.
- Have good drops for their level, including the Zombie champion scroll and possibly a Shield Left Half.
- There is one level 28 flesh crawler in the same room, which can also be used for training.
Disadvantages:
- Can damage up to 40 frequently.

- The Pirate's Cove area is not well known, and there are many spawns packed close together.
- Some drops can give a good profit, including Ranarr Seeds and grimy Ranarr.
- Many drops can be alchemised for a good deal of money, using the High Level Alchemy spell.
- The Pirate's Cove can be used all the way until level 99.
- The ones at Brimhaven have 600 life points and the ones at Pirate's Cove have 850!
- Over 40,000 experience an hour can be gained through killing Moss Giants.
- Moss Giants are aggressive for players with a Combat Level of 84 and below, which allows for less clicking.
- Moss Giant Island has two slice of cake respawns, reducing the need to carry food.
- If you've completed the "Shilo Village" quest, Moss Giant Island is close to a bank using the Shilo Village cart system.
Disadvantages:
- Must have done "Dragon Slayer" to access Crandor.
- Must have started "Lunar Diplomacy" to access Pirate's Cove
- Beware of revenants in the wilderness area.
- The Varrock Sewers cannot be efficiently used without a decent agility level, and are sometimes crowded.

- Drops big bones and various seeds. The Snapdragon seed dropped by ogres can be sold for 293.
- High LP for their levels.
Disadvantages:
- Spots close to a bank can get crowded in largely populated worlds.
Tip:
- An effective method for gaining melee XP is called Dungeon Healing. Have a Staff of Air, law runes, water runes, a ring of kinship,
and emergency food in your inventory. Teleport to Mobilising Armies. Travel a short distance northeast where you will find a large number of ogresses.
Kill as many as possible. When your health gets low, use your ring of kinship to teleport to Daemonheim. Enter a dungeon, then leave it.
When you leave it, you'll have full health. Teleport back to Mobilising Armies and repeat.
Monsters in the Dungeon of Tolna
Advantages:
- They are almost always abandoned, and they have 500 LP each with low offence and defence stats. Many spawns present.

Located at the Pirate's Cove, west of Brimhaven or in the Chaos tunnels
Advantages:
- Moss Giants drop Big Bones for Prayer.
- The Pirate's Cove area is often deserted since most players do not even know of its existence, even after completing Lunar Diplomacy.
- Good seed drops, including ranarr seeds and snapdragon seeds.
- Many drops can be alchemised.
- At these levels, the experience rates from Moss Giants suddenly soar. These spawns can be used all the way until level 99!
- The spawns are very close together, enabling continuous killing.
- They drop many charms (mainly gold charms) used in Summoning.
- At the island west of Brimhaven, there are cake respawns.
- After completing easy Fremennik Tasks, depositing inventories can be fairly quick and simple through Peer the Seer near the market of Rellekka.
Disadvantages:
- Must have started Lunar Diplomacy to access Pirate's Cove.
Fire Giants
Located in the Waterfall Dungeon, the Smoke Dungeon, or the Chaos tunnels
Advantages:
- Fire Giants drop Big Bones.
- Very good drops, including the Dragon Medium Helmet.
- Drop many charms (mainly gold charms) used in Summoning.
- Deposit box is just up the escape rope at Barbarian Assault.
- The Smoke Dungeon is deserted since people are more attracted to the Dust Devils there.
- With Guthan the Infested's set effect, players can stay here as long as they like.
Disadvantages:
- Must have started Waterfall Quest to enter Waterfall Dungeon.
- Must have facemask and 10 slayer to enter Smoke Dungeon, sacrificing the helmet spot and any barrows set effects. (Healing is possible there, but players must switch to the mask every 8 seconds, or they will be continuously hit 20s until their life points are reduced to 1. Ordinarily, this would not be a problem, but since the fire giants are capable of hitting 110s and are aggressive, a connection loss can mean the loss of many millions of coins.)
- Many aggressive wild dogs in Brimhaven dungeon.
- Far from bank.
Skeletal Hands and Zombie hands
Located at the Meiyerditch Dungeon
Advantages:
- High life points and very low defence. With a Salve Amulet or a Salve amulet (e), players can hit them even more frequently than Experiments. In some cases, over 100k experience per hour can be gained.
- Decent drops, mainly bracelets, including the rare dragonstone bracelet.
- Not very crowded.
- Players may fish Slimy eels and Cave eels in the fishing spots nearby for food. There are logs and a tinderbox spawn where the Mutated Bloodvelds are to make a fire.
Disadvantages:
- Must have completed a large part of Legacy of Seergaze to enter Meiyerditch Dungeon.
- When attacking a skeletal or zombie hand, additional skeletal hands may drop from the ceiling or rise from the floor to attack players. Fortunately, the respawn time of these "hidden hands" is extremely slow.
- Level 65 agility is needed to reach the dungeon quickly. An alternative is to access the Blood Altar through the Abyss (or by using a Blood altar teleport tablet, although, with the first option, players' prayer gets drained and they will be skulled without a Forinthry bracelet.)
Giant Spiders
Located in the Stronghold of Security at Gunnarsgrunn
Advantages:
- They are aggressive to all combat levels, so players do not have to constantly click on them; in fact, they will only have to click to eat food and renew aggressiveness.
- Players can easily bank at Edgeville with an Amulet of glory or just walk to Edgeville or the Grand Exchange, or you can bank at Soul Wars activity which is closer and the means less running!
- A full inventory of lobsters will last for a long period of time.
- Dragon battleaxe special attack can boost strength.
- This spot can be used all the way up to level 99.
- This spot also offers great experience rates per hour!
Disadvantages:
- Can get very crowded in some areas.
- Are extremely accurate (bring good food)
Mutated Bloodvelds
Located at the Meiyerditch Dungeon
Advantages:
- Very high life points (level 146 ones have more than Black Dragon) and very low defence.
- They can drop raw cave eels which can be cooked since there are log and tinderbox respawns nearby.
- Some of them can be killed with a halberd.
Disadvantages:
- They can hit hard and frequently.
- They use magic-based melee attack. Armour with high magic defence is recommended.
- When attacking a Mutated Bloodveld, Skeletal Hands may drop from the ceiling or rise from the floor to attack players.
- Level 65 agility is required to reach the dungeon quickly.
Bandits
Located at the Bandit Camp (Kharidian Desert)
Advantages:
- 60-80k experience per hour under the right circumstances.
- They are in a multi-combat area and are aggressive if players have any item representing Saradomin or Zamorak and will never stop being aggressive.
- Tip: If Saradomin or Zamorak armour/cape is too expensive, a holy or unholy symbol will work as well or saradomin/zamorak arrow.
- There is a general store quite close by, so players can un-note food by selling it and buying it back.
- If a player brings Full Guthans, a God Cape, Ring Of Life and a full inventory of food, turns auto-retaliate on, and stands in the Bar of the Bandit Camp, he/she can earn amazing defence experience per hour (around 100k) without clicking at all (apart from when its an emergency and you need food), however, players are advised to carefully watch their health, as the bandits can kill even the very best players when they swarm. This method can be crossed with a strength training weapon at the expensive of having to pay a bit more attention to the game.
Disadvantages:
- The area is almost always crowded in English language servers, so going to a German or French server is recommended, but even those can get crowded.
- If players do not pay enough attention, they can be killed very fast as the bandits are not weak.
- Relatively far from a bank.
Skeletons
Located in the Shadow Dungeon
Advantages:
- One of the best spots to train to 99!
- They are undead, so a Salve Amulet can be used.

- Drop some good herbs, like grimy ranarrs, and drops law and chaos runes quite frequently.

- Close to Ardougne Bank.
- A Bunyip can tend be the only source of healing you need (bring food just in case).
Disadvantages:
- Requires partial completion of the Desert Treasure quest.
- They are level 80 and can hit high sometimes.
- After about 10–15 minutes, they are no longer aggressive, so the player will have to switch spots.
- Ring of visibility required to enter the dungeon.
Play Soul Wars

- Safe activity.
- Gain several thousand experience per zeal depending on level, up to 3 zeal per game.( xp from zeals depends on your level in that skill)
Disadvantages:
- 20 minute games, 3 minutes in between.
- Only 3 Soul Wars worlds.
- Somewhat high slayer recommended.
- Can be crowded.
- Long waiting periods.
Dagannoths
Located in the Lighthouse Dungeon
Advantages:
- Low defence.
- Lighthouse is just a one minute walk from Barbarian Outpost, so using a Games necklace makes this place accessible quickly (the necklace used can be used can be used to teleport to the Wilderness Volcano to bank).
- Players can un-note food by walking upstairs and selling then buying it back.
- Normally not crowded.
- Decent drops (including Snapdragon Seed, Level 2 and 3 Clue Scrolls).
- They drop fish, so it is possible to carry a minimal amount of food.
- Frequently drop Gold Charms.
- Can use Balmung for maxing hits.
- Level 92's have horrible accuracy and Level 74's have even worse accuracy.
Disadvantages:
- It is a multi-combat area, so getting piled is to be expected, and the level 74 dagannoths use ranged attacks.
- Far away from a withdrawal bank (Neitiznot, Seers' Villiage and Gnome Stronghold are the nearest banks).
- Requires the completion of the Horror from the Deep quest.
- High agility needed to get to lighthouse quickly and safely.
- Need to partially complete Blood Runs Deep for Balmung. (Only the first dagannoth fight is needed, the boss fight is not necessary.)
Mountain Trolls
Located on the Death Plateau
Advantages:
- Low defence and high hits.
- Area accessible easily.
- Frequent charm droppers.

- Death Plateau quest required.
- Nearest bank is below the Burthorpe Pub.
- Climbing boots needed.
- High defence level or protect from melee prayer recommended.

Located in the Living Rock Caverns
Advantages:
- All the monsters have extremely high life points and low defence making for good experience.

- Are aggressive.

Located in Chaos Tunnels
Advantages:
- They are aggressive.
- They are in a Multicombat area, making it excellent training place for good armours.
- They won't hit lot if you have a decent defence level. (55+)
- Good prayer training, they drop Big bones.
Disadvantages:
- They have a medium max hit, hitting up to 77.
- They have bad drops for member monsters of that level.
- Ice warriors may also attack you.
- If you don't pay attention in the Chaos Tunnels they can pile you, and kill you.
- If collecting drops, there is a long way to a bank.
Tzhaar Fight Cave
Advantages:
- When you die you lose no items.
- Theres no fee so you can do it as much as you want.
- You get Tokkul as a reward so you can save up and buy Tzhaar items.
Disadvantages:
- Depending which method(s) are used, the Fight Cave can become quite costly.
- Due to the large number of waves, it will take you at least two hours to get deep into the cave.
Things to Consider
- Players should find a good balance of food and potions to bring, but also make sure they have space in their inventory for loot.
- Players can bring Potions, which can speed up kill rates increasing experience. Attack potion, Strength potion, Zamorak brew, Combat potion, Super attack, Super defence, and Prayer potions are a few examples of potions commonly used during training. Be warned when using Zamorak brew as it deals damage when drunk.
- Players can train Slayer and melee simultaneously. Black masks and Slayer helmets give a 15% Attack and Strength bonus, while enchanted salve amulets give a 20% bonus when fighting undead creatures.
- Players should bring a one-click teleport like the ectophial or a teleport tablet, for a quick teleport, in case you run out of food, prayer or potions. This is encouraged as a safety precaution.
- Halberds can reach over two squares, allowing players to attack from safe spots. Unfortunately, halberds provide slow experience, but players take no damage while fighting a melee monster/boss.
- If you have any charged Stealing creation armour then wear it since the armour gives double experience 'in whatever you are training, even when only wearing one piece at a time.' Each piece lasts for 43000 xp in total for combat skills (so, 21500 bonus xp per piece). If you can earn more than 21500 xp in the amount of time it takes to recharge a Stealing Creation armour piece, (20 points to recharge after the weapon/armour is purchased for the first time) then Stealing Creation armour is unnecessary.
- If you have 60 or higher Attack, it is not recommended to use the Sacred Clay Scimitar, because better weapons like Dragon are available
- A very lazy way to train combat skills would be to travel to Tzhaar Fight Caves, located in Karamja Volcano. Entering in next to bank, easily found by going to your world map and finding the bank there (there's only one bank in there, so locating it is fairly simple). When you die, you respawn right outside so every item you brought in (food, arrows, and runes will NOT be refunded, unless you don't use them) will come back out with you.
