Portable forge is an item won on Treasure Hunter that acts as both an anvil and furnace when planted. Using the forge provides 10% additional experience to most smithing actions (does not provide bonus experience when smelting corrupted ore). The furnace provides a 5% chance of providing an extra bar while the anvil has a 10% chance per bar of saving each of the bars in use (this includes protean bars). All bars saved are deposited in the bank whether your inventory is full or not. When this happens, the following shows up in the chatbox:<br /> or

It can be placed anywhere that you can light a fire and is both visble to and usable by all other players. It cannot be placed in a Player-owned house. It cannot be placed in an ongoing fight of Vorago, regardless of being able to light a fire there. It vanishes after placed for 5 minutes. Although you can still use the forge after it disappears if you have clicked on it, you will no longer receive any of the benefits of the forge. When the Forge disappears, if you are Smithing, you will be stopped unless, curiously, smelting protean bars or corrupted ore. However, this may be an oversight by Jagex. As of a recent update (10/2), this is no longer the case for protean bars.

You could use another player's portable forge and receive the same benefits. A popular place to do this was in world 2 at the bank in Burthorpe or at the Combat Academy in Lumbridge for members. This was particularly useful for training, as players like to use pulse cores at this location, giving a 2% bonus to any experience earned for 10 minutes for all players nearby. This can stack up to 10% and would combine with the forge's bonus experience rate of 10%. A popular free-to-play portable forge location was world 3 at the Combat Academy, next to the bank chest.
Used purely for smithing bars for experience, the forge can significantly reduce costs. 1,000 rune bars smithed into platelegs and sold on the Grand Exchange would require 13 forges and save 111 bars, resulting in a profit/loss of coins, or an hourly profit/loss of coins (3105 bars smithed per hour) or coins per experience, and 232,875 experience per hour.

Depending on Grand Exchange prices, portable forges could yield more profit per hour compared to other methods like Superheat Item, the Blast Furnace, or regular anvils.
Note: The above calculations do not take the effects of wasteless smithing into consideration.

If a player decides to buy the ores (1,000 runite ores, 8,000 coal and 29 portable forges), smelt the bars and process them into platelegs the forges would produce an extra 175 rune bars. This results in a total profit/loss of , or an hourly profit/loss of . Additionally high alchemising the resulting 391 platelegs would change the total profit/loss to and the hourly profit/loss to .

Portable forge detail

Portable forge was an item won on Treasure Hunter that acted as both an anvil and furnace when deployed, but not as a barbarian anvil. Using the forge provided 10% additional experience to most smithing actions (excluded smelting corrupted ore). This boost also worked for leveling up the Augmented crystal hammer and Hammer-tron. The furnace provided a 5% chance of providing an extra bar (including bane ore), while the anvil had a chance of saving one bar at a rate of 10% per bar used (this included protean bars). All bars saved were deposited in the bank whether your inventory was full or not. When this happened, the following showed up in the chatbox:
You managed to make an extra bar from your ore in this exceptional furnace! It has been sent directly to your bank. or The portable anvil saved your bar!

It could be placed anywhere that you could light a fire and was both visible to and usable by all other players. It could not be placed in a Player-owned house. It could not be placed in an ongoing fight of Vorago, regardless of being able to light a fire there. It vanished after placed for 5 minutes; though you could add more forges to the already deployed forge which added more time with a maximum of 60 minutes. Although you could still use the forge after it disappeared if you had clicked on it, you would no longer receive any of the benefits of the forge. When the Forge disappeared, if you were Smithing, you would be stopped unless smelting corrupted ore. It is unclear if this was intended behaviour or an oversight.

Right-click configure allowed players to choose smelting or smithing as the left-click option of portable forges.

Jewellery that requires a furnace could only be made on a portable forge and not a portable crafter. However, the forge did not provide any of its other benefits when making jewellery.

Depending on Grand Exchange prices, portable forges could yield more profit per hour compared to other methods like Superheat Item, the Blast Furnace, or regular anvils.

Trivia

 • It was possible for wasteless smithing to activate together with the forge's bar saving ability.
 • On 15 June 2015, a bug was introduced that allowed players to use the portable forges in order to block players, preventing them from moving. This bug was later fixed.
 • On 13 March 2017, the "Check duration" option was removed and the remaining time could instead be checked by examining the item.
