According to the [[Head mourner]], "The original aim of the Death Guard was to secure a foothold in the east, in preparation for 'His' arrival. Now though our objective has become a little more...how should I put it...proactive. That fool King think we are here as his ally, we duped him into thinking that Iban was enough of a threat that he let us setup here. Lathas even thinks 'He' will help him dispose of the Knights of Camelot. The plague was actually fabricated by King Lathas', to justify the building of the city wall. But it has also worked in our favour too. We help him keep the people of Ardougne believing in the plague, but now after the discovery we have bigger fish to fry here."

Mourner

The Prifddinas Death Guard, colloquially known as the mourners, were an organisation of elves in service of the Iorwerth Clan. Originally called an "old and honourable society," the Death Guard served as Lord Iorwerth's primary force in his attempts to summon the Dark Lord during the Elven Civil War.

The Death Guard also kept order in the Iorwerth camp inside the field Prifddinas had occupied before its reversion to seed form by the Elven Elders for the Iorwerth mayor. In the final years of the war, the Death Guard took over and oppressed West Ardougne as part of their plans, before being purged as a result of the Ardougne Revolution. Following their flight from Ardougne, many of the Death Guard died in a large battle between the Iorwerths and the Tyras guard, after which the organisation served no more purpose.

History

The Death Guards are an organisation of elf assassins part of the Iorwerth Clan. They were sent by their leader Lord Iorwerth to help King Lathas keep up the appearance that there was a plague in West Ardougne. In reality, there is no plague and those who were "afflicted" by it were actually poisoned by the Mourners so they could be taken away and used as slaves to dig for the Temple of Light underneath West Ardougne, which Iorwerth planned to use to revive the Dark Lord. Their name comes from the fact that since the bodies of people "afflicted by the plague" are still "contagious" they are the only ones who attend the funerals of the "deceased". Gwir calls them "dark elves in disguise". Elena sneaks into West Ardougne to investigate the plague, but she is caught by the Death Guards and was imprisoned. Later, an adventurer sneaks into West Ardougne and rescues her. After that she and the adventurer start investigating the plague to find out what it is. But they later discover that the plague is a fake and that Lathas had created it to defend Ardougne from his brother.

Trivia

  • The Mourner's suit seems to be based on the suits used by doctors during the outbreak of the Bubonic Plague in the 1400s. Instead of the gas-mask like apparatus, doctors wore masks that resembled crows or other kinds of birds. Instead of berries (dwellberries), the doctors put roses and herbs in the mask's "beak".
