Red dragons are the second strongest chromatic dragons. They primarily attack using a Fire Bolt spell, but as with all dragons, they can use a magic-based dragonfire attack. They also use melee if the player gets within melee range. The dragonbreath attack can hit from a distance as well as up close, so an anti-dragon shield, the Protect from Magic prayer, or an antifire potion are essential when fighting them as they can otherwise hit over 1500. Money can be made by selling their drops. Collecting the hides and bones makes each kill worth approximately 5,000 coins.

If assigned red dragons as a slayer task, baby red dragons may be killed as an alternative.

The Red Dragon Isle is a dangerous place to kill red dragons, but is relatively empty. If killing them there, only bring items you are willing to lose, as it is a multi-combat area.

The Brimhaven Dungeon location is a safer place to fight Red dragons. If you are fighting them here, you will need 875 coins for the entrance fee, or alternatively Karamja gloves 3 which also provide a teleport. You will also need 30 agility or Karamja gloves 4. It can be useful to bring Bones to Peaches tablets to turn bones from wild dogs in the area into food.

Strategy

As with all dragons, protection from their dragonfire is required. An Anti-dragon shield or type of dragonfire shield can be combined with an antifire potion and a one-handed weapon to negate the deadly breath. With 85 herblore, super antifire potions allow the use of off-hand or two-handed weapons.

Using Ranged

Red dragons are weak to bolts, although other ranged weapons will prove effective. Ranged armour will protect you from their magic attacks, and you can place yourself out the range of their melee attacks. With a Dragonfire deflector and at least Royal dragonhide armour, one can completely negate the need to bring food with moderate use of the Rejuvenate ability.

Using Magic

If magic is your preference, you should use the highest levelled wand you can wield, in tandem with an anti-dragon shield. Without a specific magical weakness, use the most damaging spell you can cast.

Using Melee

Due to their classification as mages, it is not recommended to engage these monsters in melee combat without sufficient equipment (level 60 or higher) and stats. If melee is still preferred, then seek to increase your accuracy with potions and prayers.

This makes each kill worth 5,000 coins.

The only non-Wilderness location to kill red dragons is in the Brimhaven Dungeon. Access it using either the Karamja lodestone, a Brimhaven tablet, a charter ship to Brimhaven, or an amulet of glory. Entrance to the dungeon costs 875 coins, unless you've completed the Hard Karamja Tasks. Take the long path south and use the shortcut to enter the area. See the map of Brimhaven Dungeon for more information. Alternatively, if you are wearing the Karamja gloves 4, you may use the shortcut near the dungeon entrance to get to them much faster.

For those willing to take the risk of high level wilderness, Red Dragon Isle potentially offers the advantage of a nearby banker, William, who wanders both inside and outside of the gates. Alternately, those who have the Wilderness sword can use it to teleport to the Wilderness herb patch, which allows for quick returns from regular banks outside the Wilderness.

Red dragons are weak to crossbow bolts, but with high level weapons, any style will work. Super antifire is strongly recommended, as it will allow you to use both hands for weapons instead of an anti-dragon shield or equivalent. Using a Beast of Burden is also helpful to cut down on the number of bank runs. Simply attack the red dragons with abilities and pick up the hides and bones. With relatively high combat stats, you can kill them in about 10 to 13 seconds on average. When your inventory and your familiar are filled, teleport to a bank using a TokKul-Zo, ring of duelling, or similar, bank, and repeat.

Using a Sign of the porter II (28 ) or higher will allow you to automatically bank the red dragonhide.
