The ring of wealth is a piece of shit that does nothing and can be made by casting the spell Enchant Level 5 Jewellery, which requires level 68 Magic to cast, on a dragonstone ring. The ring of wealth increases the chance of its wearer getting a drop from the rare drop table.
Monster drops are determined at random from a table. On many monsters, one of the slots on the drop table is the rare drop, which is not a single item. Instead, when this drop is randomly selected, the rare drop table drops another item at random from a separate list containing items like gems and half of a key. However, this second table normally contains many "empty" slots that, if landed on, cause the monster to drop nothing except for its 100% drops. The ring of wealth reduces the number of empty slots on the rare drop table, increasing the odds of receiving items such as half of a key.
It should be noted that, though wearing this ring helps remove the 'blank spaces' from the rare drop table, if the player is on an extended slayer assignment (or other expedition for real loot) it might be better to get nothing than rune spears or rune javelins or other of the 'rare' but dubiously valuable drops that clutter up the inventory the ring encourages. This problem might make some players question the efficacy of this ring, and makes it doubtful that it's worth wearing it over, say, a ring that can actually help combat.[1]
In issue 24 of the God letters, Guthix had this to say about how a ring of wealth works:
“ | If thou consider the possessions of an enemy to be like a roulette wheel, then the 'rare' items so coveted by players are located on a second roulette wheel, that will only be spun shouldst thou roll a specific number on the first wheel. The ring of wealth affects not the number which thou may achieve upon the first wheel, but should thou gain the precise number to allow thee access to the second, the ring will make thy chances of gaining an object on that second roulette wheel all the greater. My analogy is flawed, for death is not like roulette, but I hope that thou see the truth within this. | ” |
This also sheds some light on how exactly the rare drop table is accessed.
Mod Ash discusses the Ring of Wealth
Mod Ash has stopped many popular rumours about the Ring of Wealth regarding drops affected by the Ring of Wealth. Mod Ash stated that the Ring of Wealth only affects monsters that drop gems, and as thus, increases the chances of dropping dragon items. He later confirms he meant old dragon stuff (such as Dragon left halves and Half keys) and does NOT affect items such as Dragon claws.
Graphical Explanation of the Ring of Wealth
The following table is an example of a fictional loot list for killing 1000 greater demons.
Item | Times Dropped | Drop Chance (%) | |
---|---|---|---|
Rare drop table | 231 | 23.1% | |
Coins | 158 | 15.8% | |
File:Fire Rune.PNG | Fire runes | 112 | 11.2% |
File:Chaos Rune.PNG | Chaos runes | 92 | 9.2% |
File:Death Rune.PNG | Death runes | 84 | 8.4% |
Steel hatchet | 82 | 8.2% | |

Jug of wine | 55 | 5.5% | |
Mithril kiteshield | 42 | 4.2% | |
Adamant platelegs | 20 | 2.0% | |
Rune full helm | 8 | 0.8% | |
Rune scimitar | 5 | 0.5% | |
Totals | 1000 | 100.0% |
As can be seen, the player was given access to the rare drop table a total of 231 times.
The following is an example of what the player might receive if they had NOT been wearing a ring of wealth.
Rare Drop Table Items | Times Dropped | Chance | Drop Chance (Including the non-rare drop table items) | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Nothing | 135 | 58.4% | 13.5% | |
Uncut sapphire | 28 | 12.1% | 2.8% | |
Uncut emerald | 22 | 9.5% | 2.2% | |
File:Rune spear.PNG | Rune spear | 18 | 7.8% | 1.8% |
Uncut ruby | 11 | 4.8% | 1.1% | |
Uncut diamond | 6 | 2.6% | 0.6% | |
File:Half key l.PNG | Loop half of a key | 6 | 2.6% | 0.6% |
File:Half key t.PNG | Tooth half of a key | 4 | 1.7% | 0.4% |
Dragon spear | 1 | 0.4% | 0.1% | |
Totals | 231 | 100.0% | 23.1% |
The following is an example of what the player might have received if they HAD been wearing a ring of wealth.
Rare Drop Table Items | Times Dropped | Chance | Drop Chance (Including the non-Rare Drop Table items) | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Nothing | 26 | 11.3% | 2.6% | |
Uncut sapphire | 67 | 29.0% | 6.7% | |
Uncut emerald | 51 | 22.1% | 5.1% | |
File:Rune spear.PNG | Rune spear | 35 | 15.2% | 3.5% |
Uncut ruby | 18 | 7.8% | 1.8% | |
Uncut diamond | 9 | 3.9% | 0.9% | |
File:Half key l.PNG | Loop half of a key | 12 | 2.6% | 1.2% |
File:Half key t.PNG | Tooth half of a key | 11 | 1.7% | 1.1% |
Dragon spear | 2 | 0.9% | 0.2% | |
Totals | 231 | 100.0% | 23.1% |
As can be seen, the number of times the player was given 'nothing' decreased as a result of wearing the ring of wealth, consequently causing the rest of the items on the Rare Drop Table to be dropped an increased number of times (and hence have had their 'drop rate' increased).
It can also be seen that the first table remains exactly the same for both scenarios (with and without the ring of wealth). The first table represents the drop table unique to Greater Demons; items such as the abyssal whip, godsword hilts and the staff of light are unique to specific monsters, and as such will only ever be found on the first table. Because of this, they are completely unaffected by the ring of wealth. Only items found on the second and third tables (i.e. rare drop table items) will ever be affected.
Trivia
- The ring of wealth does not affect Treasure Trail or Barrows rewards. Nor does it affect clue scrolls drops, PvP drops, Champions' Challenge drops or charms.
- The ring of wealth does NOT affect the drop rate of the draconic visage, godsword hilt, dragon chainbody, Dragon full helm, spirit sigils, King Black Dragon Heads, or other unique drops. It only affects the items on the rare drop table.
- The ring of wealth does not affect drops while LootShare is enabled.[3]
- The unenchanted counterpart is far more expensive than the Ring of Wealth itself. This is possibly due to the ability of an unenchanted dragonstone ring to be changed into a dragonstone ring (i), which gives large attack and defence bonuses.
