IRC bot requests is the process by which users of the RuneScape Wiki's IRC channel decide who shall be allowed to run bots in the channel. A bot developer should create this request himself or herself, unless there is sufficient need for other users to do so on his or her behalf.

What is a bot?
For the purposes of this process, a bot is any IRC client whose sole purpose is to respond automatically to user requests or commands aimed at it, either by a single-character prefix such as !, ` etc., or by having its name used directly as in Examplebot: command here.
Decision process
The strength of the arguments supporting, opposing, or expressing a certain opinion of the candidate bot is the main factor used in determining the success of the request (see our consensus policy). Requests must last for at least one week at which point they may be analyzed for a final decision, which may determine whether or not there is consensus to allow the bot to run. Additionally, if the outcome of the request is not clear, the nomination may be extended for a further week in order to determine a proper consensus.
Here are a few general guidelines:
 • Bot developers should be well-known, trusted, and helpful contributors to the wiki and IRC channel.
 • Bot developers should have been active contributors to the wiki/IRC channel for at least eight weeks to a few months.
 • If a request fails, it is generally a good idea to wait a few weeks before creating another request for the same bot. Depending on the reason(s) for which a bot request failed, it may be wise to add or remove commands, or perform more testing in other channels on Freenode (using /join ##examplebot) first.
Expressing opinions
Any user who has an account is welcome to comment on requests. Comments should assess the use or need for the bot.

The following is a list of common discussion markup choices which should be placed at the beginning of all posts within a nomination section.

 • Support - followed by a reason for supporting the bot.
 • Oppose - followed by a reason for opposing the bot.
 • Neutral - followed by a reason for neither support nor opposing the bot.
 • Comment/Observation/Note - followed by a statement presenting facts or clarifying a disputed fact.
 • Not yet/Wait a little - followed by a reason for currently opposing while suggesting future support.
 • Notice of intent - an administrator's notification of an intent to either close a discussion or extend it for a specified period of time.
 • {Decision} - a decision made by an administrator presented in the form of {Example candidate bot} has been approved to run in the IRC channel or {Example candidate bot}'s nomination is now over, and it has been denied.

Creating new requests

All nominations should be posted at bottom of this page, not at the top.

How to request

To request approval for an IRC bot, simply place a header below containing the bot operator's main nickname, optionally wikilinked to his or her username on the wiki, and the planned nickname of the bot (required), and a section for discussion:

User:Example's Examplebot
Your reasons for requesting here, remember to sign with ~~~~

For Sysops

Nominations for bot approval are to run 1 week. Please take note of the time the request was made and close this discussion 7 days from then. If the request is successful, please adjust RuneScape:Off-site/IRC#Bots. If the bot fails consensus, simply archive the nomination.

Elune's Elunebot

One of the channel's existing bots. Elunebot is more of a fun bot, but it has some commands for links. You can read more about its commands at User:Elune Anzu/Elunebot.

SUPER CEREAL OSM SAPORT - becuz ponies. In all seriousness some commands are useful, like >cloak, for new users and such. User:Exor Solieve 04:45, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

Evil1888's Evilbot

One of the channel's existing bots. Evilbot has wikilinking; with this, the channel members are able to use the familiar Page name and Template name syntax to create clickable http:// links. Evilbot supports creating custom commands for the fun of channel members, but this can also be used to create link shortcuts.

Support Keeping - It's pretty much a given that the `tell feature exists in the channel. A large percentage of the IRC base uses it from time to time. Minimal spammy commands (When Micha isn't around), and some decent features in setevent and such. Slayer helmet (c)Immo Voted Worst Wikian 2013 Slayer cape (t) 04:33, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

Support - Good back-up for bullbot. Also like Immo said the `tell and `setevent commands are invaluable to irc users. User:Exor Solieve 04:45, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

Support - Yep. Because of `tell, which is good when you want to reach a user whose MemoServ inbox is full, or one who doesn't check MemoServ notices; `setevent for the ping list; being a backup for bullbot. Basically per Exor, but with a bit more reasoning. Lol

Support Keeping - If we could merge it into tybot, i'd support that, but it's nice to able to see when relevant discussions are edited. Slayer helmet (c)Immo Voted Worst Wikian 2013 Slayer cape (t) 04:33, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

Support - It's handy when heated discussions are going on. User:Exor Solieve 04:45, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

Support - But it'd be better if the bot were there more often. And I would want to see it merged with TyBot as well. See my threading example from Forum:HairyBot for pointers.

Support - But this bot really should be merged with tybot. There is no real reason for them to remain separate since proof has provided a solution. 222 talk 06:52, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

Support - Though I think it should remain separate of tybot because it serves a different purpose and with them separate. User:TyA/sig 14:14, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

rscript.org's RuneScape:Off-site/IRC/RuneScript

One of the channel's existing bots. RuneScript allows users to look up the skill levels of a named player, the Grand Exchange price of a named item, the availability of a given name; it allows users to perform calculations and Google searches, and more. RuneScript's Grand Exchange update notifications are required by TyBot's Exchange namespace updater to function. Its commands are detailed here.

RuneScript is assumed to be grandfathered, so silence in 2 weeks will imply consent to keep the bot. Comments may still express support and opposition explicitly.

arble's bullbot

One of the channel's existing bots. bullbot has wikilinking; with this, the channel members are able to use the familiar Page name and Template name syntax to create clickable http:// links. It normally doesn't link to a page that doesn't exist, but can be made to do so by adding an @ in front of the opening brackets of the wikilink.

Support - Primary wikilinker for irc. Also, best bot. User:Exor Solieve 04:45, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose - the reasons for not merging this bot's function into another bot don't fly for me. Σ (talk) 06:26, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose - Its function is so simple that Evil1888 could replicate it in Evilbot after adding a few of bullbot's checks, like the page name existence check and the special page canonicalisation, if applicable.

Weak support - Bullbot has been the most reliable of all the channel bots to date, however it would be more useful if it had more functions integrated into what has proven to be a reliable platform over the years. 222 talk 06:52, October 26, 2012 (UTC)

Support - It is a good wikilinker. We don't have a limit on how many bots in the channel, so I don't see why we are seeing the need to move functions to other bots. User:TyA/sig 14:14, October 26, 2012 (UTC)
