Community interaction is much different from the other main subjects seen here. You can edit without using tables or templates, but no matter what, if you are around the wiki for very long, community interaction will become an everyday part of your life. It varies from welcoming new people to getting involved with projects like this one! The community is the biggest factor in anything at the wiki, so would follow that learning how to participate in discussions and share your ideas is one of the best things to do around here. This lesson will show you how to do just that.

Vandalism

If you are around the wiki for any length of time you will begin to notice that it is vandalized on occasion. We pride ourselves on having a very active userbase that reverts all damage done by vandalism generally within seconds of it taking place. There are no requirements to help revert vandalism, and it's a very simple process, but first you must learn to identify it. Vandalism can just be adding obscene things to a page, or it could be changing the numbers in a charm log to show false results of the drop rates of certain charms. It could also be done by falsely changing the information in the grand exchange page for an item, causing it to reflect a false price for people. It could also be spam.

Regular Here Most of the page was simply replaced with "poo". Things similar to this are often done by new users. This will be gone into more depth later.
Charm Here The amount of blue charms was dramatically increased. If you scroll down, you can see that it is -28% chance to receive no charm, and almost always a blue charm. This is obviously incorrect.
Exchange Here The last price of the Onyx was changed to 1, which is clearly incorrect. This edit could have been done it good faith however, which will be gone over later in this section.

The most important thing to remember with vandalism, is that you must always assume good faith. Unless you have a reason to believe someone is vandalizing, assume that they were making an edit to try to improve the page. As such you should approach it like that. When you notice an unproductive edit to a page. You shouldn't immediately scream at the editor and say "OMG why you vandalise noob!!!!!@!!@!@!" as that's likely to just escalate things and give you a negative response. It's much better to approach it something along the lines of "I noticed your edit to ______(page here)______. Thanks for contributing, but that is actually incorrect. I have reverted your edit, but I wanted to let you know why it had been reverted. I hope you understand, and good luck editing ~~~~". That let's them know that you care and are trying to help them. There are templates for this, but personal messages generally go a lot farther than templates. If you notice someone is making multiple unproductive edits, you should leave them a sterner message like "Your edits to ______(page here)______ are unproductive. In light of this fact, they have been reverted, and you would be asked to not make edits like them in the future. If you continue to edit in this manner, you may risk being blocked. Thanks, ~~~~".

Counter-Vandalism Unit

If they continue to vandalize after they have received multiple warnings, you should go ahead and add them to the CVU (Counter-Vandalism Unit). When you go to it, you should scroll to the bottom of the page, click to edit the last section, and replace {{cvuid|insert vandal}} with the vandal's username/ip address followed by the page. Such as: {{cvuid|Haloolah123|Black dragon}}. This person's contributions will then be reviewed, as well as all other information that needs to be taken into account, and then a sysop will decide whether to give the person a temporary block or not. (Or in extreme, repeated cases an indefinite/permanent block.) Remember to only report people who have vandalized and been warned multiple times.

Auto CVU Script

There is a script that will give you a (report) link next to the (undo) link when looking at a page's history. This allows you to save time by auto-filing the report for you. It can be found here. This is optional, but it can make things faster if you choose to use it, as many users do.

Policies

A full list of policies may be found here.

Policies are in use all the time. They can be used for good things or bad things, but if you want to get involved in the community, learning about policies is one of the best things you can do. Many policies are put into everyday use, some aren't so common. This lesson will go over most of the basic ones that are very important for contributors here to know and understand. Think of them as your rights. They will protect you, but only if you know how to use them.

Status and Opinion Weight

Status and Opinion Weight (SOW) is meant to stop any one group from ruling the wiki. It means that even though a sysop has extra tools than an autoconfirmed user, their opinions count for the same amount in a discussion. Supposing of course they bring up equal points. This does not mean you can say "because they are my friend". But you could say, "I've known ____ for quite a while. I consider them my friend. Because of this, I've really got to know them, and I think that they are very helpful to everyone..." As long as the point is valid, it counts the same, no matter who's idea it is.

Assume good faith

This policy has already been discussed above in the vandalism section, but just to reinforce it, as it is a very important one. Unless you are beyond reasonable doubt that someone is unproductively editing a page, assume that they were making the edit for the best, and act accordingly. This can be hard to follow, but many new editors blank pages and make edits that would seem to be bad, but really they are just trying to figure things out. Being nice and letting them know that their edits aren't helping in a friendly manner can mean the difference between gaining a very valuable contributor to the wiki or annoying someone such to the point that they will vandalize more (intentionally) and possibly tell their friends and/or people they meet that the people here are mean and that would ruin our reputation as one the of best sources of RuneScape information.

Consensus

Consensus is the policy that determines what will happen on the wiki. It is based off of the general feeling of the community on an issue. It is NOT majority rule. It counts the points people are bringing up as opposed to just the number of people stating something. One person saying why something is a stupid idea is better than one hundred people just mindlessly saying they support it because they are friends with the proposer and thus anything he proposals will be a good idea.

Don't Delete Discussions

This policy applies to all talk pages, as well as some additional pages. It is very simple. If a discussion takes place, you must not remove it from that page. You can strike through, archive, or refactor it. But the discussion must remain there in some form. It will always be in the page history, but this just makes past discussions easier to find.

Don't Edit Userpages

In general, you do not want to edit userpages. You may make maintenance edits to upkeep the page, but as for the actual content of the page, that needs to be left alone. You may also revert any vandalism that you see done to userpages. However, you want to be careful, because sometimes people forget to log in and they end up editing their userpage without realizing it. You can leave them a message on their talk page to let them know this.

Don't Feed the Trolls

If you spend much time in the clan chat you will notice that some players are trolls. A troll is someone who intentionally does things to annoy other people, such as taking a stance that is against the common view. They do this just to annoy other players. If at all possible, recognize this, and ignore them. Talking to them (feeding the trolls) only gets them more riled up because they are getting a response. It just means they will continue to be annoying and cause arguments and fights. Ignoring them however means they will get bored quickly, meaning they will leave everyone alone that much sooner.

Gaming the System

Gaming the system is taking a false advantage of the system. One of the most common ways this is done is to play two policies off of each other to get a result that neither policy intended. It also can apply to using loopholes that weren't intended. One example of this is a user making a large number of small, unnecessary edits in order to achieve the 50 edit count required to vote in User of the Month and Request for Adminship. With this policy, just use common sense and don't do things that you think are unacceptable.

Granularity

Granularity is a policy that states what deserves an article and what doesn't. Individual discussions happen on different items/groups of items all the time, but the most important thing to remember again is to use common sense when wondering whether to create an article or not.

Neutral Point of View

It is important for mainspace articles to maintain a neutral point of view. For instance, if a skill page said "This skill sucks and no one should ever train it", it could cause problems with readers and we would look bad as a fansite.

Ownership

Main article: RuneScape:Ownership

No one owns any article here. It doesn't matter if you made it, or if you are the biggest contributor to it. You can't revert someone's edits because you think that it's your article. You do NOT own your userspace either, and you may not do whatever you want with it. You can do quite a bit, but certain rules still apply. Wikia owns the servers we use, but no one here has any legal rights to any information here. Once it is on the wiki, it is free game for anyone.

Players Don't Deserve Articles

This simply states that neither players nor articles deserve or will have any mainspace articles here. They may however be made in your userspace if you so desire. Any articles that are made will be deleted or blacklisted if they have to be.

RuneScape Wiki is not...

This states the things that we are not here. Some of the most common being: an image hosting site, meaning that we do not allow personal images (images not used in mainspace), Jagex, meaning we can not change the status of anyone's account or what is happening in the game, or Wikipedia, meaning things that are one way on Wikipedia are not necessarily the same way here, but we do use a lot of similar things. There are many other things, but those are the most common uses of it.

Three-Revert Rule

This policy states that you should not make more than three reverts to any one page within any 24-hour period. This does NOT mean stop reverting vandalism. It means to not cause an edit/revert war because you disagree with someone. Use common sense with this. You won't be in any danger of getting blocked if you are reverting vandalizing, no matter how many reverts you make. Hopefully a sysop shows up before you have to revert too much however.

Use Common Sense

Arguably one of the most important policies here. Use common sense, especially when you are in doubt. This should be applied to anything. Even if it means breaking policy, if it is the smart decision to make, go ahead and do it, and this will be your defence. However, don't game the system and use this as your defence to do something stupid.

User Treatment Policy

This policy determines how other users should be treated. Basically, be nice to everyone and it's all good. Some users won't follow this, but even when dealing with them, you should remember to be nice. This will help not to escalate things and you will still be following the policy that way.

Yew Grove

Main article: Forum:Yew Grove

The Yew Grove is where most major discussions take place on our Wiki. Here we attempt to achieve consensus on the issues we discuss, meaning that votes are not counted, opinions are. If somebody has stronger reasoning behind their position, their opinion will have more weight when it comes to determining consensus. These discussions will affects lots of pages/users or other important things, and use the "Forum:" namespace. In order to place your opinion on a Yew Grove Thread, you should use the following format:

(Opinion) - Reason ~~~~

Opinion can be support, oppose, (strong support/oppose), neutral, question, pending, or comment (though there are essentially an infinite number of options here depending on the situation, but these are the most ideal). The reason or context is whatever you decide it to be. Please make sure to use a valid reason though, or your comment may be ignored when it is time to determine consensus. As always, you need to add your signature to the end (that being the four tildes).

In some cases you may decide that you want to make your own Yew Grove Thread. To do this you may go to the above link and type what you want it to be called (please note that some special characters are not allowed), and click "Add New Topic". When making your own thread, it should go something like this:

"I see this as a major problem and this is why this needs to be done. I think that this would be the best way to make this change happen. ~~~~"

Then you should put a space followed by:

"==Discussion=="

"Support - As nominator. ~~~~"

Please make sure your topic has to be put on the yew grove. If it's something very minor, generally you should just be bold and make the changes. If you have a question as to whether something is necessary to be put upon the Yew Grove, you can always ask a sysop or another user that has been around for a long time and participates in the Yew Grove a lot.

Featured things

There are several featured things that will be put on the main page, as well as having notices on the article/image/and optionally userpage.

Featured Article

The featured article discussion is very similar to the Yew Grove. It's just a simple Support/Oppose and a short reason why. You may provide a longer reason if you wish, but generally a short reason will suffice. After discussion takes place, an article will be decided and it will receive that honour. Kudos to those who wrote it.

User of the Month

User of the month is very similar to article of the month. The main difference and thing to remember is that in user of the month discussions Oppose votes are not acceptable. If you don't think someone deserves that honour, propose another canidate or choose not to support them. But opposing may result in a block. Also, the user of the month is decided purely from number of supports.

Featured images

Featured images is not a monthly discussion, but other than that it is very similar to the article of the month discussion. Nominations will remain open for one week (but may be extended for another), and if they receive consensus they will become a featured image. This means they will appear on the mainpage as well as getting the featured image template put on their file page.

Requests for Deletion

Sometimes outdated or useless stuff needs to be deleted, but it doesn't fit the criteria for a speedy deletion, so that's when it goes here. It's similar to a Yew Grove discussion, but generally people state their opinion with "Keep" or "Delete" instead of "Support" or "Oppose", because it makes it easier to keep track of things that way.

Requests for Undeletion

Deleted things are kept on Wikia's servers (and are just only viewable by sysops). This means they can be restored if consensus determines it. Most deleted things are just kept deleted, but occasionally some things need to be restored, and this is the place to propose it.

Requests for Tools/Ranks

Users that have been around for a while may want to request additional tools to aid them in editing. These tools are only given to certain users and most of them require some kind of process of consensus to obtain.

Requests for Rank

Requests for rank will give you the rank of sergeant in the clan chat. This is a one week process and requires consensus. It is basically like a Yew Grove Thread, but you want to be sure to be nice, and remember the User Treatment Policy. Being active in the clan chat is the most important thing.

Requests for Adminship/Bureaucratship/Forum Adminship

Requests for adminship are a much bigger deal than requests for rank. People will look very closely at your edits unlike a request for rank. They will want to make sure you will be a good community representative, and use your tools wisely. It is almost exactly like a request for rank, but it is open for two weeks, and you can expect people discussing it to be a lot more critical than on a request for rank. Requests for bureaucratship mainly focus upon your edits as a sysop. They should show that you are a good community leader, able to keep your head in the most tense of situations, and always able to remain neutral if you must. Generally sysops will only become bureaucrats if there is a strong need for one at that point in time. As their main duties are assigning user rights and closing requests for adminship, there is not the same need for a large number of them as there is with sysops. Requests for forum adminship are also open for two weeks, but address the actual RuneScape Wiki Forums (NOT the Yew Grove). These will give them tools over there, but no more tools upon the Wiki itself. They will happen the same way as a request for regular adminship.

Non-Wiki Communication

We have several different ways to communicate apart from the Wiki, but all rules of both the Wiki and Jagex still apply. This goes over the two most common.

Clan Chat

Main article: RuneScape:Clan Chat

The clan chat is used by almost all users. There are almost always ranks in it, and just remember the rules and you will be fine.

Internet Relay Chat

Main article: RuneScape:Chat

The IRC is used by some users. Just like the clan chat, follow the rules and you have nothing to worry about.
