The RuneScape Wiki was a section of the RuneScape website. It was released on 22 November 2011, replacing the former Knowledge Base. Jagex announced discontinuation of support for the wiki on 24 March 2015, with the removal of the ability for players to edit following a few days later. It was later deleted completely on 25 August 2016.
History[]
“ | It was never intended to be a competitor for the player-run Wikia. The reason we had our own was because we could control the information on it. | ” |
— Mod Balance[1]
|
The wiki was composed of Jagex-approved pages, which only Jagex Moderators could edit, and community-powered pages, which contained contributions from both Jagex staff and subscribed members of RuneScape.
To edit pages, players needed membership status, at least 10 hours of gameplay, 5 quest points and a total level of 100.[2] Users banned from the RuneScape Forums lost their editing privileges on the wiki.[3]
Sections of the wiki included:
- Game Guide, which covered game content
- Support Centre, which provided players help with account, safety, payment, and technical problems
- Scribbles & Sketches, containing player fan art, letters from in-game characters, histories and lores
- Community Hub, containing wiki policies and information on how to edit the wiki
Before its closing, it had 21,604 articles and 3,184,511 contributors.[4]
Closure and deletion[]
On 30 June 2016, plans to remove the RuneScape Wiki were announced on the RuneScape Forums.[5] On 12 August 2016, all pages starting with http://services.runescape.com/m=rswiki/
were made to redirect to the Customer Support section. On 25 August 2016, the RuneScape Wiki was deleted completely.[5]
