a detailed image of a rune crossbow.

The rune crossbow is the highest grade of crossbow made out of standard metal and the 7th most accurate of all single-handed crossbows, behind the Demon slayer crossbow, Dragon crossbowArmadyl crossbow, Karil's pistol crossbow, chaotic crossbow, and the Ascension crossbow (tied with dominion). It requires a Ranged level of 50 to wield, can use bolts up to runite and is available to members only.

Rune crossbows can be made through the Fletching skill at level 69; a player must first cut a yew stock for the crossbow from yew logs, granting 50 Fletching experience. Then, a player must add rune crossbow limbs to the stock, granting 100 experience and making an unstrung rune crossbow. Finally, they must string the crossbow with crossbow string, granting 50 experience. The rune crossbow is faster than the magic shortbow and the Rune 2h crossbow, but does not offer a damage bonus, while the shortbow and 2h crossbow do. To compensate, it can be wielded with a shield, for significant defensive bonuses. This allows for players to range while still keeping defensive abilities of shields such as an anti-dragon or dragonfire shield when fighting dragons.  Alternatively, it can be combined with an off-hand rune crossbow to dramatically increase one's attacking power. They can also be obtained through completing Hard Treasure Trails.

Trivia

  • There is a common misconception that the higher grade of crossbow, the higher the max hit will be. With one-handed crossbows, however, only accuracy is determined by the crossbow itself. The ammunition, ranged level, the use of potions, and prayer used is what determines the damage dealt and not which grade of crossbow is used. Nevertheless, it does indirectly influence damage done, as the grade crossbow used decides how powerful the ammo you can use is, as well as how often you can hit.
