A Rune kiteshield provides medium Defence bonuses and is wielded in the offhand slot. It was the strongest kiteshield in free play until the Rune berserker shield was released with Fist of Guthix. However, the rune kiteshield is favoured over the berserker shield because it does not degrade over time and is much cheaper. (Following the 30 April 2013 update, rune kiteshield now has the exact same stats as a rune berserker shield, rendering the latter no longer worth to get.) During the 2001 Christmas event in which partyhats were obtained by pulling a Christmas cracker, these shields were frequently received. This item is dropped by several high-level monsters (such as fire giants and steel dragons) although such drops are very rare. Before the introduction of higher level shields, rune kiteshields were fairly rare due to the high Smithing requirement needed to make them.
To wield this item, a player must have at least 50 Defence. It can be smithed with a Smithing level of 97 by using 3 rune bars and a hammer at an anvil, granting 225 Smithing experience.
Rune kiteshields can be painted with a banner or shield easel at the workshop of any Player-owned house to convert them into a "player-made" Heraldic kiteshield, changing the shield's appearance to the chosen family crest of the player, provided the player has level 43 Crafting.

Crest kiteshields
Crest kiteshields (see Sir Renitee for more information) can be obtained by painting a normal rune kiteshield on a Shield easel in a Player-owned house. All the different variations of shields have the same bonuses as a normal rune kiteshield. Constructing a Shield easel requires 41 Construction. If you do not have a Shield easel, you may use another player's.
Note that painting the crest on the kiteshields turns them into members-only items, and untradeable. You can also make a crest shield using a steel kiteshield, and they look identical, however they have different bonuses. There are a total of 16 shields to choose from.
Note: You cannot remove a crest or paint over it once it has been applied.
