The Rune knife is a ranged throwing weapon. It is the third best throwing knife in the game, behind the degradeable gravite knife and the members-only Dragon knife, and requires 50 Ranged to wield. They can be obtained by using the Smithing skill, looting a ninja impling, a drop from certain metal dragons, trading with another player, or sometimes by smashing barrels. Rune knives can be wielded with a shield or god book for protection. They are commonly used in PvP situations, but due to their price, are often replaced with dragon darts or, in free-to-play, rune javelins.
Members can make rune knives at level 92 Smithing. Each Rune bar will create 5 rune knives and grant 75 Smithing experience.
