A Sabre-toothed kyatt is an animal that can be trapped using the Hunter skill at level 55. These are caught using a teasing stick to provoke them and then by luring them over pitfall traps. The pitfall traps are set using a log and a knife on the pitfall. There are dead trees which can be cut to obtain the logs. Sabre-toothed kyatts can not be attacked by players. The kyatts are typically non-aggressive, but once teased by a player, kyatts retaliate with melee attacks. Their maximum hit is 74 life points.

Strategy

Requirements: Fairy-tale II - cure a queen, 55 Hunter, 52 Summoning

Items Needed: Hatchet, Knife, Teasing stick, Tireless-run scrolls (50-100), 34 Willow logs (8 in terror bird), Dramen staff (or lunar staff unless the completion of Fairy-tale III - Battle at Ork's Rift)

- Wearing weight reducing equipment, hatchet and armor such as rune platebody or Varrock armor 3, kyatt hat and legs

Using Fairy code D-K-S to take you to the snowy hunter area, running north-west to the pit-fall traps that are not covered in snow and start to set-up all 3 pit-fall traps.

Tease the close by Kyatts and quickly as you can Lure it to the pit-fall and jump over it, if successful check the trap and reset the trap.

Repeat the step above until all your willow logs have been used up. When your run energy get low use the Terror-bird special;

when you have used up all your willow logs you may chop down trees for more logs (wearing Seer's Headband will yield 2 logs when cutting regular trees) or use the fairy ring and bank, getting more logs, restoring HP and scrolls.

These Methods may yield between 600k-1100k gp per hour depending on prices, similar gp/h to cannoning Green dragons.

Another method is to use an Arctic bear (71 summoning) in conjunction with the ring of kinship/dueling ring/glory (4). The Arctic bear will teleport you to the snowy hunter area where the kyatts are located.

A Familiar is not required to hunt kyatts however they do aid a great deal, you may also want to think about carrying some food if your HP and/or Defence is of a lower level.

Reasons to trap Sabre-toothed Kyatts

The fur is used to make Kyatt hunter gear.

The fur is a tertiary component of the Spirit kyatt Summoning Pouch

Catching a sabre-toothed kyatt is part of the Fremennik Province Diary, being a medium task.

After completing the Fur 'n' Seek quest, this kyatt drops Sabre-like teeth, a bone in the Odd Old Man's second Wish List.

As with all pitfall hunter creatures, good kyatt fur is worth much more than the tatty fur. Good kyatt fur is worth 6,295 coins when sold on the grand exchange.

Habitat(s)

The Sabre-toothed kyatt can be found in the Trollweiss Hunter area. This can be easily reached with the D-K-S fairy ring.

Glitches

On rare occasions after you have captured a kyatt, it respawns with the spikes from the pitfall trap underneath it, even while it walks around. They eventually diminish after several minutes, This problem also occurs with the Graahk and has yet to be removed by Jagex.

Another glitch is if you trap the kyatt and jump over the pit at the same time, the kyatt will come back to life from the pit and continue. The kyatt will have the spikes from the bottom of the pit around it and at the same time spikes will remain in the pit preventing you from building over it for several minutes. Also, on occasion when you clear the pit of the fallen kyatt, the shadow of the kyatt remains even though there is nothing in the pit.

It is possible to lure a kyatt into a trap while there's still a kyatt in the pit, this is achieved by luring a kyatt over a pitfall then jumping over the same pit again and then teasing another kyatt and jumping over the pit once more, the seconds kyatt will fall into the pit with the first. - (it has been seen to check the trap for both kyatts and their furs, possible Bug and may be against Jagex rules). This has now been fixed, you only get 1 set of fur and bones, now (09Sept2010).
