Shades may be assigned as a Slayer task by Vannaka. In addition to 'Shades' themselves, Loar Shades, Phrin Shades, Riyl Shade, Asyn shades, and Fiyr Shades, which can be found in Mort'ton or the nearby Shade Catacombs can also be slain to fulfil the task. The shade is a discontinued random event and is now located at the entrance to the last level of the Stronghold of Security. They are non-aggressive and have a max hit of 116. When attacking a shade, a player receives only a quarter of the normal experience per hit, similar to a couple other undead monsters.

Additional damage can be done to shades through the use of Salve amulets or the Gadderhammer weapon.
The spell Crumble Undead will most likely fail at a low magic level. Players trying to get Shade robes are advised to range this monster.

Shade tasks for slayer can be assigned by Vannaka. Unlike most Slayer assignment monsters, these shades only give 15% (10.5 points) the normal slayer experience per kill. As such, the various shades in Mort'ton are recommended instead for slayer tasks. For people who haven't completed the Smoking Kills quest and do not wish to participate in the Shades of Mort'ton activity, it is advisable to talk to the slayer master in Burthorpe to get a new slayer task, otherwise you can skip it in exchange for 30 Slayer points or block it for 100, as the Shades located in the Stronghold of Security are very poor slayer experience.

Random event (discontinued)

When a player buried bones, they had a possibility of angering an aggressive Shade appearing and attacking them. Shades were transparent in appearance and looked somewhat like a ghost. As with similar guardian random events, the combat level of a shade varied according to the combat level of the player unfortunate enough to run into one. When slain, the shade usually dropped nothing, but sometimes it would drop an assortment of bones, and on rare occasions, shade robes. Originally, shades were able to close or open a door without standing beside it, which was unique among all free monsters, but this feature was removed.

 • Shades have the old idle and walking animations that were used on players before RuneScape HD.
