[FAQ] [doc]

The shade is a discontinued random event and is now located at the entrance to the last level of the Stronghold of Security. They are non-aggressive and have a max hit of 114. Unlike most monsters, they only give a quarter of the normal experience per hit, similar to a couple other undead monsters.

The spell Crumble Undead will most likely fail unless the user has a high magic level (75+ should do it). Players trying to get Shade robes are advised to range this monster.

Shade tasks for slayer can be assigned by Vannaka. Unlike most Slayer assignment monsters, they only give 5% (3.5 points) the normal slayer experience per kill. For people who have completed the Smoking Kills quest and are able to get Slayer Points, it is advisable to talk to the slayer master in Burthorpe to get a new slayer task, in exchange for 30 slayer points, as Shades are very poor slayer experience.

When a player buried bones, they had a possibility of angering an aggressive Shade appearing and attacking them. Shades were transparent in appearance and looked somewhat like ghost. As with similar guardian random events, the combat level of a shade varied according to the combat level of the player unfortunate enough to run into one. When slain, the player usually received nothing, but sometimes it would drop an assortment of bones, and on rare occasions, shade robe. Originally, shades were able to close or open a door without standing beside it, which was unique among all Free-to-play monsters, but this feature was removed.

Trivia

  • The examine text of a Shade is "Dead, but not gone", possibly referring to the song "Dead and Gone" by T.I.
  • These were the fourth highest level free-to-play monster, being tied with Cockroach soldiers. However, after the Wilderness Crater was re-opened, Hellhounds were introduced to free worlds and so shades are now the fifth highest level monster.
  • Although Shades are transparent, Shade robes are not.
  • Their attack noise sounds somewhat akin to the sound that ghosts make in the videogame Luigi's Mansion.
  • Shades have the old idle and walking animations that were used on players before RuneScape HD.
  • The random event shades' examine information was "Creepy!" and "The angry dead."
  • shades attack animation is that of slashing a sword and their defence is that of a sword as well, but they hold no sword
