Money sinks, also known as gold sinks, are ways for Jagex to remove in-game items and money from the system. This is usually done to prevent inflation, and to keep the price of items at a moderate level. Various ways to generate raw materials, such as Mining, Fishing, and Woodcutting all generate a consistent amount of money into the RuneScape economy each day. Jagex uses money sinks to attempt to keep the amount of money being generated into the game from inflating and causing RuneScape coins to lose value, causing prices to increase.

Examples

A few main examples of money sinks include:

  • Construction - Large amounts of money must be spent on items such as marble block, gold leaf, and magic stones at shops, and are not attainable any other way.
  • Summoning - Ingredients for making familiars and pouches must be bought from Summoning shops at some point.
  • Shops - Money is removed from the game when players buy from them, however these also return some of the money if a player sells to a shop.
  • Barrows armour - Requires a fair amount of money to be repaired and needs to be repaired regularly.
  • Death - Before the update of gravestones, the items dropped upon death were deleted in a short time when undisturbed, which can have a varied effect on particular items.
  • Mobilising Armies - Players must exchange raw materials and skill-related by-products to get investment points which can only be used in this activity. However, players can spend the reward points to acquire other raw materials such as herbs.
  • CoinShare - Items are placed on the Grand Exchange for medium price while players receive the minimum price, thus removing the difference from the game.
  • Tolls - Such as boat rides.

Shortfalls

Money sinks do not work as effectively as Jagex intends them to do. This is shown by near constant inflation in the RuneScape economy.

Reasons for this include:

  • Players may consider training money sink skills to be "wasteful" and unrewarding for money spent.
  • Some methods may be unpopular, only available to higher-levelled players or Members.
  • Changes have rendered some methods no longer effective, such as gravestones increasing the amount of time a player has to recover their items.
  • Many updates Jagex have implemented have reversed many of the methods they put in previously.
