They attack with Melee, Range or their unique ice-breath attack. This attack can freeze players in a fashion similar to the Ancient Magicks ice spells. Players should wield a Mind shield, Elemental shield, Body shield, or Dragonfire shield, which negates stat loss as well as lowering the max hit of ice breath attacks to 100. If a player is not wearing one of the shields, they will be hit for very high damage. Contrary to popular belief, armour does NOT affect the accuracy of the ice-breath attack. The ice-breath will hit through all types of armour. However, higher magic defence will make the max hit slightly lower. Protect from Magic/Deflect Magic prayers will lower the maximum hit of the ice-breath, but the range/melee protection prayers are far better to use compared to protect from magic.

  +
There is much dispute as to what is the most effective setup when killing Skeletal Wyverns. A number of options are listed below. For each case, there are numerous players that consider it the best strategy.
Some players believe it is most effective to bring prayer boosting armour and to use the protection from range/deflect range prayer. The problem when doing this is that high prayer boosting armour, such as Proselyte armour, generally has low melee defence stats therefore making this set-up counteractive. Sacrificing some prayer bonus for more melee defence through Verac's armour is a more balanced set-up when trying to maximise prayer bonus. Additionally, Piety/Turmoil can be used to greater increase the accuracy and damage of attacks as well as the players defence.

  +
Melee: Proselyte armour
  +
This setup comprises:
Alternatively, players can simply tank the skeletal wyverns by maximising their range and melee defences and disregard protection prayers. When killing this way, it's recommended to bring stat boosting potions, such as a super set, and high level food like sharks. Tanking will require high defence armour such as Barrows armour (Torag's for example) and the Dragonfire shield. Prayer potions to fuel Piety or Turmoil are highly recommended, and are easily paid for by the wyvern bones collected.

*Soul Wars cape > Ardougne cloak 3/4 > Cape of Accomplishment (trimmed)
  +
*Amulet of fury > Stole > Amulet of glory
  +

  +
*Gloves (barrows) > Regen bracelet
  +
*Dragon boots > Bandos boots

  +
The player uses the Protect from Missiles/Deflect Missiles prayer to reduce damage, sacrificing some melee defence in favour of a high prayer bonus. The player may also choose to use Turmoil, Piety or weaker accuracy-boosting prayers to speed up kills, but at greater cost. At least one Prayer potion will be needed using this setup, and more if using boosting prayers.
There is also dispute as to the most effective attack style when fighting skeletal wyverns. Most people believe that wyverns have high resistance to stab and a weakness to crush and slash, with crush being a greater weakness. Given that one of the correct shields must be worn while fighting skeletal wyverns (mentioned above), this limits the amount of weapons that one can use to combat skeletal wyverns. Most of the powerful crush weapons, such as the Chaotic maul and Dharok's greataxe, are 2-handed weapons and can't be used without risking heavy damage from their ice breath attack. Many of the 1-handed crush weapons available are either too slow (battlaxes/warhammers) or too weak (maces). On the contrary, many powerful 1-handed weapons that use slash are available such as the Abyssal whip and the Chaotic longsword. These much more powerful slash weapons are generally considered the most effective weapons when killing skeletal wyverns, despite the wyverns having a greater weakness to crush.

  +
Melee: Barrows/Bandos armour
Wyverns can be killed with range from a distance. This will negate their melee attack, causing the player to only have to worry about their ranged attack. When using one of either protection from range or deflect range, no damage will be taken, other than the occasional damage from their ice breath attack. The great drawback with this method is that the wyverns are highly resistant to range attacks and killing this way will take significantly longer than when using the aforementioned melee methods. It is highly recommended to have above 80 range and to use range potions and/or range boosting prayers, such as Eagle Eye, to help in increasing the speed of the kills.

In this alternative, players simply tank the Wyverns by maximising their range and melee defences and disregard protection prayers. High level food like Shark or Monkfish is recommended. The player's prayer points can instead be used on Piety or Turmoil, and bringing at least two Prayer potions is strongly advised, as well as being easily paid for by the Wyvern bones collected.

Range: Armadyl/Dragonhide armour
  +
  +
By far the best choice for players ranging Skeletal Wyverns is the Armadyl chestplate and Armadyl chainskirt, although Black dragonhide armour will suffice. The player may then choose to add prayer bonus using a Stole and Soul Wars cape / Ardougne cloak, etc. or to add accuracy and defence using an Amulet of ranging, etc. A higher prayer bonus will save money on Prayer potions, while a higher Ranged bonus allows for faster kills. Using the Protect from Missiles/Deflect Missiles prayer is essential.

For most players, one of the above weapons will deal the fastest possible damage. Regardless of the chosen weapon, either Super attack and Super strength or the Extreme potion equivalents are very strongly advised. Special attack energy should be used to heal with Enhanced excalibur, which will also eliminate the need for Super defence if the player has it available. The Soul Split curse can greatly help here to keep health replenished.

The dragon mace has the slight advantage of a +5 prayer bonus, but in general this setup is unlikely to be effective. It may be the best option for players with lower than level 70 Attack, who cannot wield the abyssal whip, chaotic weapons or Korasi's sword. The obsidian mace may be enhanced by wearing a Berserker necklace, but this also sacrifices some accuracy. Needless to say, a Super set will be essential, preferably with an Enhanced excalibur in the inventory, if available.

[FAQ] [doc]

Skeletal Wyverns (pronounced /ˈwaɪvərn/ WYE vern; Draconis Ossis) are very dangerous monsters that can drop Granite legs and the rare Draconic visage. Level 72 Slayer is required to kill them. An Elemental shield, Mind shield, Body shield, or Dragonfire Shield must be equipped when fighting wyverns, or else the player will be hit for very high damage. Note: regular antifire shield does not work here. They are currently the lowest-level monsters to drop the Draconic visage.

Killing a Skeletal Wyvern is one of the hard Falador Tasks as well as for the wish list of the Odd Old Man in the Fur 'n' Seek quest.

Skeletal Wyverns' have an often under-rated earnings potential, as players on a slayer task with over 85+ range, 68 summoning and 80+ defence with full slayer helmet and using ranging/defence potions can easily make 200k+ an hour, including banking time. They are also a great source of crimson charms, although there are many (easier) alternatives if one is not on a slayer task.

Attacks

Wyverns have high Defence, Attack, and Life points, making them very challenging opponents.

All my long hours of research have finally paid off! Today I discovered an ancient journal in the great library, which detailed a ceremony for giving life back to greater beasts after they have died! I shall finally be able to unravel the secrets of the Skeletal Wyverns!
 • The horns on the sides of the Skeletal Wyvern's skull look remarkably similar to those on the side of the dragon heads in the dragon forge.
 • On the 23 April 2010, some players experienced a graphical glitch which caused all wyverns in view to disappear; however, their life bar and shadow remained, making it look as if players are fighting the air.
 • Before the skeletal wyvern's attacks were updated, there was a glitch in which Protect from Melee would block both its melee attacks and breath attacks.
