Skilling pets are pets that are obtained from training skills. 19 skilling pets were released on 22 August 2016, one for each non-combat skill, and 8 more were added on 20 November 2017 for every combat skill. There are currently a total of 27 skilling pets, one for each skill.
While training, the player has a chance to receive a pet as a drop. Free to play players may obtain pets from free to play skills. Skilling pets display the player's experience in the associated skill when they are examined. It is possible to override Summoning familiars with skilling pets. When the player receives a pet, they get a message, along with a world announcement.
When a player has received and inspected their fifth non-combat skilling pet, they unlock the [Name], Jack of Trades title, along with a world announcement. When a player has received and inspected all non-combat skilling pets, they unlock the [Name], Jack of All Trades title, along with a global broadcast. When a player receives their third combat pet, they will unlock the title [Name], Jack of Blades, along with a world announcement. For obtaining all combat pets, players will unlock the title [Name], Jack of All Blades, along with a global broadcast. By obtaining all skilling pets (including for combat skills), the player will unlock the title [Name], Master of All, along with a global broadcast.
Although released with the original 19 skilling pets, Crabbe was reclassified as a combat skilling pet when skilling pets were added for combat skills, thus making him a requirement for the Jack of All Blades title instead of the Jack of All Trades title like before the update. Players were able to submit concepts for the combat skilling pets as part of a competition. The ninja team selected their top concepts for each skilling pet and players voted on all new pets, as well as the details for the associated titles.
Drop formula[]
There are two ways of awarding skilling pets: the time-based or experience based method.[1]
Skills which fall under the time-based method are: Agility, Divination, Firemaking, Fishing, Hunter, Mining, Thieving, and Woodcutting.
Skills which fall under the experience based method are: Attack, Constitution, Construction, Cooking, Crafting, Defence, Dungeoneering, Farming, Fletching, Herblore, Invention, Magic, Prayer, Ranged, Runecrafting, Slayer, Smithing, Strength, and Summoning.

Time-based[]
Time value is based on how long it takes to complete an action. Multiply the time value by the skill's virtual level. If the player has 200,000,000 experience in the skill, then add +50 to the skill's virtual level. Divide it all by 50,000,000 to figure out the chance per action.
In a purely mathematical format the chance of receiving a pet on any particular action is
Where:
- is the amount of game ticks taken per action.
- is the virtual skill level. At 200 million experience, a flat bonus of 50 is applied to this value.
Agility differs slightly in that the chance is generated upon completing a course lap, and in this case refers to the estimated completion time of each lap.
Experience based[]
Only the base amount of experience is considered when rolling for a skilling pet. The drop chance of a skilling pet is calculated using the base experience that the player has earned in that skill and pre-assigned modifiers based on the table below.
Skill | Modifier |
---|---|
Construction | 30 |
Cooking | 25 |
Crafting | 20 |
Dungeoneering | 25 |
Farming | 12 |
Fletching | 20 |
Herblore | 45 |
Invention | 180 |
Runecrafting | 28 |
Smithing | 20 |
Divide the base experience by the modifier, then multiply it by the player's virtual level (adding +200 to the virtual level if 200,000,000 experience) to get the chance out of 50,000,000.
In a purely mathematical format the chance of receiving a pet on any particular action is
Where:
- is the base experience per action. In Dungeoneering, this is divided by the number of party members per dungeon.
- is the modifier.
- is the virtual skill level. At 200 million experience, a flat bonus of 200 is applied to this value.
The formula for obtaining combat-based skilling pets is currently unknown.
Mechanics[]
The following items and training methods do not provide any chance of receiving a pet:[2]
- Use of protean items
- Minigames
- Experience lamps/stars
- Silverhawk boots
- Elite training dummies
- Divine locations
Any form of experience boost (below) does not increase the chance of obtaining a skilling pet:
- Portable skilling stations
- Experience-boosting sets
- Bonus experience
- Voice of Seren experience boost
Players can get a pet while training in a Clan Citadel, as well as using portable skilling stations, skillchompas, and Crystallise.[3]
If the player's inventory is full, the unlock item will be sent into their bank instead. If the bank is full, it will be delivered to the player as soon as there is space in either of those places.
The chance of obtaining Shamini, the Summoning pet, accounts for the time taken to gather charms, and thus may be earned slightly faster than other skilling pets.
