A Smith can be found sittong on a stool by the furnace and anvils in Ashdale while playing through the tutorial. If talked to, he will tell you that you are free to use both the furnace and anvil.
He cannot be found after the tutorial, but he does appear along with the other villagers at the end of A Shadow over Ashdale, where the player rescues him from the Crassians.
