The staff of light is a one-handed staff that requires 75 Magic and 75 Attack to wield. It is obtained as a unique drop from ice strykewyrms, which require 93 Slayer to kill.

The staff of light features a number of properties that are very useful to mages:

• It boosts Magic damage by 15%, the second largest boost in the game after the chaotic staff's 20% boost.
• When a combat spell is cast with the staff, there is a 1/8 (12.5%) chance that the staff will negate the rune cost for that spell. This chance increases to 20% when wearing combat robes, and 50% when wearing battle robes.
• The staff of light can be used instead of a slayer staff to cast Magic Dart.
• It has the third highest Magic attack bonus among non-Dungeoneering staves at +17, behind Zuriel's staff (+18) and the master wand (+20).
• The staff has a special attack, called Power of Light, that envelopes the user in a shield of light which will reduce all melee damage by 50% for one minute. (Verac the Defiled has a chance to hit full damage through the special.) The special attack uses 100% of the bar, and the effect will run out if the staff of light is unequipped before the minute is up.

The staff of light is also notable for its offensive melee stats, which are unusually high for a Magic weapon. Its stats are comparable to, though superior to, the dragon longsword, and it is the third strongest and second most accurate one-handed non-degrading slash weapon in the game.

• There was a glitch where The Staff of Light's reduce melee damage ability works in duel arenas without the staff of light equipped and a better melee weapon such as chaotic rapier or abyssal whip is equipped; This has been fixed. The glitch was performed by borrowing a Staff of Light and having the owner demand it back after the player activates the special, Then the player can switch to another weapon while keeping the reduce melee damage ability activated.
• The Staff of Light experienced a bug as of June 24, 2010 as the new update was brought in; the bug caused the special attack of the staff to be defective, showing the message "you need the Staff of light equipped to do that."
• There was a glitch where The Staff of Light's rune saving ability worked in free to play; This has since been fixed.
• The bladed part of the staff looks like a smaller version of a Saradomin Sword, also the hand-guard looks like the symbol of Saradomin when viewed from the top of the staff downward. This has confused people who have seen it making them think that they can get it from Saradomin boss room in God Wars. This however, is not true.
• The Staff of Light is sometimes used in Duel Arena staked matches. In matches where the combantants can only use a weapon, instead of the commonly used Dragon Dagger or Whip, the owner of the Staff of Light will use the special giving a massive advantage in the fight.
• The Staff of Light and the Godsword hilt have a similar examine information.
• This item could not be lent out for the first 8 days after its release. However, an update on February 16 2010 changed that.
• The Forge regent's special ability, Inferno, can be used to deactivate the special attack by unequipping the staff.
• Despite having a different animation, the special attack uses the same sounds as Excalibur's special.
• The drop rate is the same as that of an Abyssal whip from an Abyssal demon.
• The Staff of Light acts more like a glaive or halberd in function due to the bladed tip, as opposed to a staff. However it is most comparable to a spetum due to the blade being double edged.
• The Staff of Light's special attack appears to be similar to the power Vanstrom Klause uses to defend himself.
• On the day of release, the Grand Exchange price for the staff of light was 10m but players were buying it in junk trades for over 150m.
• The Staff of Light's special attack mirrors the same movement Gandalf made in the movie "Lord Of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" when trying to fend of a Balrog.
• Despite the Staff of Light's lack of a crush attack bonus, its defensive attack style is crush; it is unknown whether this is a glitch or not.
• When casting a combat spell with the Staff of Light, the user thrusts it in the opposite direction, with its bottom section facing the front.
• Although the Staff of Light resembles a Saradomin item, it will not protect you from Saradomin creatures in the God Wars Dungeon, nor will it change you in Castle wars entering the Guthix or Zamorak portal. This means that this item isn't related to Saradomin, unlike the similar-looking Saradomin sword.
• This is one of only three staves with a special attack, the other two are the Penance trident and Penance master trident.
