Stardust can be mined from a Shooting Star from the Distractions and Diversions minigame. Shooting stars randomly land anywhere on Runescape every 2 hours or so.
Players can help identify where it would land by using a Telescope in a Player-owned house. Once they have mined a crashed star to the middle whilst gathering stardust, they can exchange up to 200 stardust with a Star sprite once every day. Players gain 71 experience per stardust they mine.

When 200 stardust is exchanged, the player is rewarded with:

In addition, players will also be rewarded with a chance to mine 2 ores from any rock for a 15-minute period. This can be piled with Varrock armour to mine 3 ores at one time. This has no effect on mining essence.
You will receive the same items but lesser amounts if you exchange less than 200 stardust.
