Alpha Beta

Does anyone have dates or info when the Alpha or more importantly the Beta testing began on this game? Interesting to know would be how the Beta-testers were handled during the initial release. Often the case is they just continue playing with the stats they have built up making new players envious (and of the "trying-to-catch-up" mind set) of the beta testers). A little history or insight would be a nice addition to this article (unless of course the beta started in 1999, but i would guess that's pure alpha).
