== Hardcore Ironmen and the Wilderness ==
  +
I had nothing better to do so I wrote an extensive list of useful tips related to the Wilderness and trying to avoid all the suckiness and getting griefed. I spared no detail. I'm not too sure about this being on the main page since it goes into *so much* detail or if it's considered relevant for the page or not.
  +
I initially wrote all of this while editing the main page, copy and pasting it broke all the formatting and links :/
  +
  +
While in the Wilderness, Hardcore Ironmen will likely want to mitigate risks involved lest they be griefed. The Wilderness is certainly the most dangerous place for Hardcore Ironmen, due to the sheer unpredictability and possibility of being targeted, especially by players higher-levelled and vastly better equipped and experienced. There are a number of completion-related reasons that necessitate venturing into the Wilderness on a Hardcore Ironman account; to give two examples, the quest One of a Kind requires the player to enter the Forinthry Dungeon, and being able to hand in Memory strands for massive amounts of Divination experience requires visiting the Wilderness Volcano. At the more dangerous end, Lava strykewyrm kills and Bloodweed runs are necessary for Aggression potions, making many Slayer tasks AFK. You may also simply enjoy the thrill of doing risky things in the Wilderness. In general, you will want to take every step possible to avoid PVP encounters, followed by attempting to teleport away, and if all else fails, escaping becomes a game of mobility. Several things, technical; real-world; and gameplay related, can be done to mitigate risk of traveling in the Wilderness, with varying requirements:
  +
  +
-Carry a full inventory of the best available, highest-healing food you have, and place it on the ability bar to heal with a desired key. Heal as much as possible if you are attacked. Be careful not to activate chat, causing your keystrokes to not function.
  +
  +
-Avoid places and times of high activity, if possible, as well as unnecessary activity in general. It is advised to avoid weekends and peak hours (generally 18:00 - 02:00 in-game time on weekdays), and avoid the Wilderness in general if it has recently received relevant updates. Block Lava Strykewyrms.
  +
  +
-Consider playing on foreign-language worlds at odd hours for their localities (keep in mind the 'Portuguese' servers are mostly populated by South Americans). This is done while the game client is loading up; click the cog icon in the bottom left, and change the language. Subjectively, the Portuguese/Brazilian players seem to be more active at PKing than the German and French players.
  +
  +
-Set your online status to Friends Only (the diamond button on the top left of the chat window. If you don't see the buttons, you need to expand the window). Any player can stalk and see what world you're on if your online status is on.
  +
  +
-Have a trustworthy player (preferably someone you know in real life or a long-time clanmate) or your main account, if applicable, scout ahead. [This does not break multi-logging rules.]
  +
<br />A very old trick (in single-combat areas ONLY) is to 'box' a friendly player or even an NPC, maintaining combat with them but dealing as little damage as possible, and then to 'X-log' both of them, or at least the desired escapees involved. This is done by engaging combat with no weapons, turning on Auto-retaliate, then exiting the game client. A player engaged in most combat with no responsive game client will log out very quickly, though in PVP and likely in the Wilderness in general, it takes one minute.
  +
  +
-Avoid all players and keep an eye trained on the minimap for white dots. Log in to a different world if you do see someone and log out successfully, hoping there is not someone else who will attack you on this world. Have the 'Esc' menu up and ready to log out whenever possible. The seeming delay when logging out is superficial and client-side; you will, in reality, log out as soon as the request is registered, and it will even work while traversing obstacles, such as on the Wilderness Agility Course. Expand the minimap so that you can have the menu up for longer without having to click to move often.
  +
  +
-Play on low graphics settings to make the logging-in blackscreen load faster. Your character is logged in the moment you hit the button, but you are unable to do anything until your client has loaded.
  +
  +
-Teleportation is your main method of escape. You will most likely want to protect against Magic because of the Teleport block spell. Plan accordingly: Teleblock can fail if you have good enough defence against Magic, and if it splashes just once then you are likely to escape easily. High Defence level, Super/Extreme Defence potions, and Ranged armour all help. Protect/Deflect Magic will likely not be useful, as they do not affect hit chance and only halve the duration to 2 minutes 30 seconds, which is an extremely unlikely amount of time for an encounter to last post-EOC.
  +
  +
-If you need to move long distances in the Wilderness, you can do so on a Free-to-play world so long as it is not above the high-level-Wilderness fence, however beware that Members' gear and food will not function. There are fewer players, fewer PKers, greatly inferior equipment available to be assailed with, and fewer high-levels in general in Free-to-play. Teleport Block can technically still be cast on Free-to-play, but even the best available magic gear (Gravite Staff, at a mere T50) doesn't allow for great accuracy at high levels, and it is a rare sight.
  +
<br />If possible, wherever your destination is, hop worlds in nearby forests or difficult terrain. This makes it very difficult for a player to spot or attack you right away if there is distance and they have to navigate around objects, allowing you to quickly log back out.
  +
  +
-If you fail to avoid an encounter, then you will have to deal with it quickly. After the Evolution of Combat, Most one-sided PVP encounters will be a game of mobility (technically they always have but you just have many more options now), and whether you escape or die will depend on your and your opponents' skills at moving around and maintaining distance. Fast reactions are important; if you encounter a max-combat attacker with T90 weapons while you are unarmored, they can combo and kill in just a few seconds. Paying keen attention to the direction you are facing (and anticipating where you *will* be, due to Runescape's .6 second tick system) when you Surge, preferably without having to stop, is of utmost importance. Be familiar with using Surge, Freedom, and Anticipation, especially not panicking and wasting your Surge into an object. If at all possible, use Anticipation to avoid stuns and save Freedom for highly damaging damage-over-time effects such as Combust and Corruption Blast/Shot, preventing well-geared PKers from doing extremely high-damage combos that can damage you faster than you can heal. The Mobile Invention perk, Bladed dive, and Barge can all also be used tactically. Additionally, Prism of Salvation may be circumstantially useful, depending on what exactly you are doing.
  +
<br />Being adept at moving diagonally will dramatically increase your odds. Most players in general have trouble doing this. If you manage to chain a diagonal Surge and then Bladed Dive unobstructed (moving 20 squares + additional squares during global cool-down in just a few ticks), you will likely escape almost any encounter.
  +
  +
-If you are in an exceptionally dangerous, tricky situation in a Members' only section of the Wilderness and your membership is close to expiring or renewing, you could allow your membership to expire and/or cancel it, forcing you back to a Free to Play area outside of the Wilderness.

Latest revision as of 22:47, 15 May 2018

This talk page is for discussing the Ironman Mode page.

Untitled

There are some players like me who are strictly against hardcore ironman mode, due to only one life and losing the account upon dying. Should any player try out hardcore and accidently kill themselves or purposely, they would immedietely rage on losing their gaming life on RuneScape and be forced to start all over for maxed players. I would like that someone mention my complaint on the forums to tell the developers of Ironman mode what would happen if a maxed player tried the hardcore mode and died on purpose and then lose the account completely and their whole gaming life they spent most of their time in reality.  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.62.52.128 (talk).

ironman and hardcore ironman will be options that can only be turned on during account creation. Anybody who wants to play ironman will have to start a new account to do so is my understanding, hope this alliviates your fears :) Zaros symbol KDanger Talk 13:37, September 13, 2014 (UTC)

From a forum post by Mod Pips here:
"The first option for continuing after death is to unlock the ability to automatically convert your account to regular Ironman if you die. You can buy a Jar of Divine Light from Mr Ex for 100k gp which will mean the gods will see you again upon death, and allow you to return to life as a normal ironman. This is an unlock rather than a physical item (like the scroll of life from Dungeoneering). This will cost GP so players will face a tactical choice in whether they dedicate precious money towards this safety net.
The second safety net is to play long enough to earn an extra life. If you’ve reached total level 1000 and can afford 100k gp you can buy a Divine Coin from Mr Ex, which when offered upon death will return you to life just once. You can buy another at total level 1600 for 10m gp. This means there is a maximum of 2 extra lives and no further. " Dragon dagger

It wonder if consuming a sign of life will count as a death. If it doesn't, having a sign equipped and a teleport handy at all (potentially risky) times seems like the way to go. Grasle (talk) 06:26, September 16, 2014 (UTC)
I doubt it; death is death. If you narrowly escape it, you escape it. Besides, the players have to make their own signs of life to use that strategy... Which means they'll need to get a diamond (ring) for every sign of life; and they're not really that common. IP83.101.44.209 (talk) 06:56, September 16, 2014 (UTC)
Jar of Divine Light does sit in your inventory or bank, unlike the Divine Coin you can buy at skill 1000 O3 Depleter (talk) 08:23, November 11, 2014 (UTC)

Gravestones

Do gravestones exist for regular Ironman? Do they work the same as in regular mode?

Article says if you die in Hardcore you lose all but 3 items. Is that items worn/inv or all items including bank? Needs to be clarified. Mamabear47 (talk) 01:34, October 20, 2014 (UTC)

..toggle off at any time...

Can you downgrade account at any time for free? Or only with Jar of Light? If actually at any time, then how? Needs details. Mamabear47 (talk) 01:36, October 20, 2014 (UTC)

You can downgrade your account, but it takes 100k to downgrade from HC to regular ironman, and another 100k to quit ironman entirely Jimfromtx (talk) 02:40, October 22, 2014 (UTC)

First 99's

I think it would be an interesting idea to note who first reached 99 in each skill in HC, as it does broadcast it to all servers.  So far, I know of StuckInADaze, 99 runecrafting.  Not sure if Iron Dylan x or cows R us was first to 99 dungeoneering.  Printmachien, Iron Crab, and Too Spooked for 99 thieving.  Potentially forum trawling would dig up exactly who was first.  Though then the question is, do we do separate for HC and non-HC, as the site does, or merge them? Jimfromtx (talk) 02:48, October 22, 2014 (UTC)

Update, DIY Oddish is the first HC Ironman to skill total 1500.  Jimfromtx (talk) 01:54, October 23, 2014 (UTC)

We've been keeping track of the 99 milestones on Skill Mastery. It's better to keep this page just about ironman, and have achievements listed on the other page. MolMan 01:55, October 23, 2014 (UTC)

Ironman Guide?

OSRS Wikia has a separate page for Ironman guide/tips. How come this Wikia doesn't have tips/tricks/guides for ironman? Puretppc (talk) 20:38, November 13, 2016 (UTC)

"by playing with fireworks"

How was that achieved? Is there any pic of that message? I know things like Nitroglycerin don't kill anymore, so what could it be? --Jlun2 (talk) 19:30, March 12, 2017 (UTC)

All I know is that it was a achieved by a user with the name of Enriching on 13 Jun 2016 in the lumbridge/dranor area although the area thing is buggy.Edwinmen (talk) 21:26, May 7, 2017 (UTC)

Icon on death

I removed the "If the death is permanent, a red skull is displayed next to the name. If the player is converted to a regular ironman, then a white skull is displayed." line from this page as it is disputed. If the conditions on which the various icons are displayed are actually known, please add it with a citation linking to an official source, otherwise keep this info off the page https://i.imgur.com/xHR7zpA.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/6encXAo.png 17:50, November 26, 2017 (UTC)

HCIM Safe deaths: Goshima, Children of Mah?

I can't verify these myself, but if someone else can and add them to the list that'd be great. -Dying to the malignant entity on Goshima is supposedly a safe death. -Dying during the 'lava surfing' portions of Children of Mah is also supposedly a safe death. 68.107.137.127 04:21, May 14, 2018 (UTC)

Hardcore Ironmen and the Wilderness

I had nothing better to do so I wrote an extensive list of useful tips related to the Wilderness and trying to avoid all the suckiness and getting griefed. I spared no detail. I'm not too sure about this being on the main page since it goes into *so much* detail or if it's considered relevant for the page or not. I initially wrote all of this while editing the main page, copy and pasting it broke all the formatting and links :/

-Carry a full inventory of the best available, highest-healing food you have, and place it on the ability bar to heal with a desired key. Heal as much as possible if you are attacked. Be careful not to activate chat, causing your keystrokes to not function.

-Set your online status to Friends Only (the diamond button on the top left of the chat window. If you don't see the buttons, you need to expand the window). Any player can stalk and see what world you're on if your online status is on.

-Have a trustworthy player (preferably someone you know in real life or a long-time clanmate) or your main account, if applicable, scout ahead. [This does not break multi-logging rules.]
A very old trick (in single-combat areas ONLY) is to 'box' a friendly player or even an NPC, maintaining combat with them but dealing as little damage as possible, and then to 'X-log' both of them, or at least the desired escapees involved. This is done by engaging combat with no weapons, turning on Auto-retaliate, then exiting the game client. A player engaged in most combat with no responsive game client will log out very quickly, though in PVP and likely in the Wilderness in general, it takes one minute.

-Play on low graphics settings to make the logging-in blackscreen load faster. Your character is logged in the moment you hit the button, but you are unable to do anything until your client has loaded.

If possible, wherever your destination is, hop worlds in nearby forests or difficult terrain. This makes it very difficult for a player to spot or attack you right away if there is distance and they have to navigate around objects, allowing you to quickly log back out.

Being adept at moving diagonally will dramatically increase your odds. Most players in general have trouble doing this. If you manage to chain a diagonal Surge and then Bladed Dive unobstructed (moving 20 squares + additional squares during global cool-down in just a few ticks), you will likely escape almost any encounter.

-If you are in an exceptionally dangerous, tricky situation in a Members' only section of the Wilderness and your membership is close to expiring or renewing, you could allow your membership to expire and/or cancel it, forcing you back to a Free to Play area outside of the Wilderness.
