This talk page is for discussing the Knife page.

This is a transcript of a discussion that is going on at my talk page, which is about this page. Would like to gauge opinion on this - anyone is welcome to disagree if they think I am abusing the template in question, but if you think this is reasonable and positive use then please post about that too. :-)

Please read the whole thing before reaching your conclusions. Many thanks. Leevclarke 18:40, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Um, do you really think its necessary to add a {{wpalso}} to articles like knife...? I mean, its a knife. Its a real item, clearly there will be an article on it. I really think its useless though. ChristineTalk 00:13, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
A fair question. My motivation is firstly to provide a link to Wikipedia, which the visitors here might not know about. Of course it seems unlikely (Wikipedia is certainly the most famous wiki), but you never know.
Another line of thought is that Wikipedia has so many interesting articles that sometimes all one needs is a starting point, and find other articles from there. Sometimes the chain of links I follow deviates far from where I started, but I end up reading some very interesting articles about things I would not have thought to look up directlty.
Of course people will know conceptually what a knife is, but where do we draw the line in deciding what does or does not justify a link to show how an item in RuneScape corresponds to its real-life counterpart? I do not elect to segregate topics like this myself, I just wanted to provide a means of putting items in RuneScape into the context of real life. The wpalso template is quite uninstrusive (since it appears near the bottom of the article instead of the top like many templates). Therefore it seems harmless to add wherever possible.
It might also encourage many of the young people who play RuneScape to click through to Wikipedia and learn some interesting information from a general encyclopaedia. OK, so reading about knives is not so fascinating, but, like I said above, there must be plenty of more interesting articles linked from it.
Well these are my thoughts anyway. ;-) Please feel free to respond - you are certainly welcome to disagree. :-) Many thanks. Leevclarke 18:34, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
