Moving documentation

I'm proposing a "change" to this template.... if there is any admin who has this on their watch list.

Due to template expansion issues when templates are nested one within another (a chronic problem with the Grand Exchange Market Watch pages), I'd like to propose the following change:

The current text reads:

 |<noinclude>
 ==Usage==
 Special template to allow | characters to be passed to templates (by using <tt>'''<nowiki>{{!}}</tt>).

</nowiki>

which instead should be changed to:

|<noinclude>{{!/doc}}</noinclude>

What this accomplishes is that templates which use this template in a nested fashion can shave off the 100 or so extra bytes per usage that this template is used, as the "no include" part isn't expanded in the processor buffer. For some pages this can add up to quite a bit of data.

The "doc" subpage would then have the "documentation" for this "template", giving the same general information.

The problem is mainly due to the method that the MediaWiki software uses when expanding templates prior to parsing, which has a total limit of about 2 MB of data before it simply stops expanding templates. As this is a "base" template, shaving off even these few bytes can add up to quite a bit of extra savings before this memory limit is hit. BTW, this 2MB is internal CPU RAM memory reserved for the processing of each page that is generated by the wiki software. If there is an admin who can make this change, it would be appreciated. --Robert Horning 04:43, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Done, hopefully we won't get as many issues with the expand space on the GEMW page now. Skill 07:59, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the help! I should note that this one change has improved at least one application I've been using by allowing up to 20% more prices to be used. That is a major and significant change. At least this way we don't have to be quite so paranoid about adding items to the common trade index. --Robert Horning 23:05, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
