This article or section requires a cleanup.
Reason: Huge gaps in the article. What about recommended equipment? I wouldn't use Guthan's for killing Tarn. This article is supposed to be about the miniquest, though it seems to have some info about the dungeon.
It does not meet the RuneScape Wiki's quality standards; you can edit this page to improve it.
This article is about the miniquest. For the dungeon, see Lair of Tarn Razorlor (dungeon)

Quests and Requirements

Recommended Equipment

  • This is an ideal place to use any high power armour such as Barrows or Bandos. If you're using range, make sure to bring armour with all around good stats, like Black Dragon Hide. Bring Ahrim's Armour if you're going to mage, and the Spell of your choice.
  • Dragon armour is not recommended because of its lack of a strength bonus.
    • If you don't own Guthan's set, then good melee armour.
  • A weapon, Crossbow, or Staff.
  • Good food - taking some food is a good idea because of the numerous traps within the lair.
  • 1-2 prayer potions - perhaps more since prayer is constantly drained during final battle
  • If you are using prayer, another option would be to wear armour with good magic defence, such as dragonhide, and use protect from melee. This will minimize the damage done by the Skeleton Mages as well as protecting you from Tarn's magic attack.

Guthan's armour is not needed for the fight nor the dungeon, a bunyip or other healers will work well. If you do not have the summoning level to summon healers, a simple inventory of sharks/monkfish and 2 or more prayer potions will work well.

Walkthrough

  • For more information on the where the lair is, see Abandoned Mines.
  • To find out more about traps within the lair, see Lair of Tarn Razorlor (dungeon).
  • Note: It is highly recommended that you turn Auto-Retaliate OFF.
  • Note:If a player has completed Smoking Kills, he or she may bypass having to navigate the dungeon and teleport directly to Tarn using a Slayer ring.(Using the Slayer ring will shorten the time needed) [1]

Enter the Haunted Mine

The disarming switch for the log trap.

Since the Haunted Mine quest is a prerequisite, players will know how to find the entrance (west of Burgh de Rott, south of the Zealot, Climb-over mine cart, Crawl-down cart tunnel). Once inside the mine, level 1, go north to the end of the path.

Reaching the Bank

The banker is to the northeast. To get there:

  • When entering the lair, go east past the floor traps and attacking monsters to the end of the passage.
  • Follow the path heading north (disarm the two wall traps by "searching" them, the southern one being attached to the western wall, the north one being attached to the eastern wall) and you will see the banker carrying a huge backpack.
  • It will cost 100 coins each time you use the bank. Some of the undead in the lair drop coins.
  • Restock, heal, and gather any and all materials you'll need for the next few parts. (Note: You can withdraw items from the bank ONLY if you brought 100 coins.)

The last rest you get before fighting Tarn.

There are many traps - you can tiptoe carefully, search, and disarm them, or stock up on food and take damage running - but there are many many traps. Tarns Lair Map

  • The route that you need to follow is D-S-T-U.
  • Pass through the doorway north of him and follow the path.
  • That means, by following the map, you go through the passage labeled D, then to the passage labeled S, then through the T passage, and finally to U. We'll go over the rest when you get there.
  • Go around the walls, ignoring all the other doorways on either side of the wall till you reach the dead end on the south-western side.
  • There should be 2 doorways here, one to the west and east. Take the western one.
  • There should be a room with a single giant skeleton. Ignore him and go onwards.
  • Go northward to the doorway, then in the next room ignore the monsters, avoid the floor traps, and take the exit west.
  • You will find yourself in a small passage. Go forward and take the passage north which has wall traps.
  • Go to the western doorway that you find after these traps and you will be at a room that has pillars.
  • Jump to the west ledge, search to find a switch which disarms the log trap (the southern one), then proceed north by jumping across the pillars.
  • From there, go east through the wall traps. Keep following the passage, carefully avoiding the receding walls by waiting until they recede. Take the doorway heading east.
  • Here you will find pillars again guarded by level 94 Skeleton mages. They will start attacking you when you reach the second pillar. It is recommended to turn on Protect from Magic prayer, ignore them, and go down the staircase on the other side.

Tarn looks angry...

  • In the next room, go north to Tarn's chamber. (Alternatively, take a breather, as this is the last safe room before the boss.)
  • Tarn, along with his animated steel armour and terror dogs, await.

Fighting Tarn Razorlor

  • It is advisable that, when entering Tarn's room, you have 2 prayer potions and 15 pieces of food (lobsters or better) left.
  • As you enter the room you will see a cut scene of Tarn transforming into a green mutant with lashing tentacles and unleashing two level 110 Terror Dogs. After this, the fight will begin. Animated steel armour (Level 53) will also attack you if you move near them. Tarn is the only monster you need to kill, so ignoring the minions and turning off Auto-Retaliate is recommended.

Tarn Razorlor

  • Prayer is drained constantly, regardless of whether or not you have a prayer activated. As soon as the cut scene ends turn on protect from melee and attack Tarn, who is level 69 combat.
  • Using Dragon Dagger (p++) specials are recommended at this time. He can attack with both melee and magic, but attacks solely with melee if approached.
  • After you defeat his first form, he will turn into a ghost, but this form is easier to defeat, so keep attacking him whilst keeping an eye on your prayer points. As soon as Tarn is defeated, a room will open up.
  • After defeating Tarn, go into the next room and pick up Tarn's diary off a table, use this book with a Salve amulet to create an enchanted/enhanced salve amulet, which gives 20% accuracy and Strength bonuses against the undead. There is a destroy option with the diary, and it can be easily re-obtained through a bookcase in a Player-owned House.

Trivia

  • With the release of Tarn Razorlor and his lair, all skeletons, ghosts, zombies and most undead creatures had a graphics makeover.
  • There was previously a bug that prevented players from reaching Tarn's Chamber without the use of a slayer ring, this was caused by the fact that if a player attempts to jump to a pillar required to cross into the chamber they receive a message "I can't reach that!". Jagex had made a temporary solution to the problem by placing a portal between the two pillars. The bug has been fixed.
  • Some players have reported that if your familiar starts fighting one of the Animated Steel Armours, whilst you are fighting one of the Terror dogs, then you cannot attack the animated armour after the Terror dog is dead, as it will give the message "Someone else is fighting that."
  • After the "Smoking Kills" quest if you have bought or learned to make a Ring of Slaying you can use the rings ability to teleport you right into Tarn's Lair and fight him directly without having to go through the whole dungeon.
