The Third-age melee set is made by exchanging a Third-age full helmet, Third-age platebody, Third-age platelegs, and Third-age kiteshield with a Grand Exchange clerk. The set's purpose is purely to save space. Players can exchange this set with a Grand Exchange clerk to receive the items listed above. To wear this armour, players need to have at least 65 Defence. This armour cannot be bought in stores or be made through the Smithing skill.

The set as a whole can no longer be bought or sold on the Grand Exchange, although you can still buy the pieces individually.

The Third age melee set is one of the rarest and most expensive armour sets in RuneScape. One of the main reasons this armour costs so much is because of the rarity of the reward while doing a level 3 Treasure Trail. Players mostly wear this set to show their wealth rather than use it in combat.

It was long thought that the chances of obtaining a piece of third-age armour was of about 1 in 10,000 (according to Paul Gower), and in 2010 Mod Maylea stated that the odds are lower than 1 in 100,000 . In a Q1 2014 Twitch stream, however, Mod John C confirmed that the chance of receiving any one piece of third-age melee armour from a treasure trail is between 1 in 7,000 and 1 in 10,500 and that the chance of receiving a specific piece of third-age melee armour from a treasure trail is between 1 in 28,000 and 1 in 42,000.
