Thorvald[]

  • Player: Howdy, Thorvald! Is there anything going on in Rellekka?
  • Thorvald: Greetings (Fremennik name)! There might be something you can help with. It concerns Koschei, the warrior you fought with, side by side!
  • Is he ill?
    • Player: Has he fallen ill?
    • Thorvald: HA! No, in all the years I have known him he hasn't been ill. Hung over maybe, from celebrating glorious battles, but not ill!
    • Player: I'm guessing this is a bit more serious than a hangover.
  • Is he dead?
    • Player: Oh no – he's not dead, is he?
    • Thorvald: Did you forget he's called Koschei the Deathless for a reason?
    • Player: Oh yeah. Sorry.
  • Does he need my help?
    • Player: Does he need my help, Thorvald?
  • Thorvald: He's been preoccupied recently. He seems to think you can help him with something, but he won't tell me what. He's in the cavern below this building, where you fought him during your trial.

Talking to Thorvald after speaking to, and then interrupting the conversation with Koschei

  • Player: Howdy, Thorvald! Where is Koschei again?
  • Thorvald: He's in the cavern below this building. You can get down there via the ladder near the back of this hut.

Koschei the Deathless[]

  • Koschei the Deathless: DEFEND YOURSELF, OUTERLANDER!
  • Player: I'm not here for the trial, Koschei!
  • Koschei the Deathless: Oh, sorry, (Fremennik name). I am used to people coming down here to attack me.
  • Player: I understand. You asked for me?
  • Koschei the Deathless: Yes I did. Something has been bothering me the last few days and I think you are the one to help. You impressed me when you fought the dagannoths on Waterbirth Island. There is something in the woods south of Rellekka, and...I can't explain it, but I feel that I must face it.
  • Let's go fight it – together!
    • Player: Why are we just standing here? Let's go fight it!
    • Koschei the Deathless: I like your attitude (Fremennik name), but this is a foe like no other.
    • continues below
  • What is it?
    • continues below
  • Player: Can't you just avoid it?
    • Koschei the Deathless: No, it must be dealt with, and soon. I'm...afraid that I cannot say why. I know it to be true – that is all.
  • Player: Do you know what it is?
  • Koschei the Deathless: It's a tree.
  • Player: A tree?
  • Koschei the Deathless: Yes. A strange tree...
  • Player: Erm...
  • Koschei the Deathless: And before you suggest otherwise, I am NOT scared of it! I fear nothing, for I am Koschei the Deathless!
  • Player: Okay, okay! Why don't you just cut it down?
  • Koschei the Deathless: Don't you think I've tried that? It resists even my sharpest axe. It will take more than the sharpness of the blade to get through that trunk.
  • Player: Then how can I help?
  • Koschei the Deathless: I believe Queen Sigrid entrusted you with an axe that is made of a very rare metal, refined from bane ore. It's the strongest axe I know of.
  • Player: Can you describe the tree?
  • Koschei the Deathless: It is in bloom, while other nearby trees are not. It's located south of Rellekka, near the path leading to Seers' Village.
  • Player: What are we waiting for? Let's go!
  • Koschei the Deathless: I would love to come and see that tree fall. However, a young Fremennik is doing his trial today and I am needed here.
  • Player: I will cut it down in your name, Koschei!

Talking to Koschei again

  • If you have Balmung in your inventory
    • Player: What did you want me to do again?
    • Koschei the Deathless: I need you to go cut down that blossoming tree with the axe you are carrying. It's near the fork in the path just south of Rellekka.
  • If you do not have Balmung in your inventory
    • Player: What did you want me to do again?
    • Koschei the Deathless: I need you to go cut down that blossoming tree from the woods south of Rellekka. Queen Sigrid entrusted you with an axe which might prove useful.

Talking to Thorvald after talking to Koschei

  • Thorvald: How goes your day, (Fremennik name)?
  • Player: Koschei has me running an errand for him.
  • Thorvald: Ahhh! I won't keep you here to tell you tales of past victories then! Be on your way!

The Tree[]

  • You swing Balmung at the tree, slicing right through the trunk. There appears to be something in the stump! You find a recess in the stump, in which there is a small chest.

Trying to open the chest

  • The chest is locked, but has no keyhole. You should show this to Koschei.

Revisiting the Deathless[]

Talking to the Deathless without the chest

  • There is no dialogue to be had. Clicking Koschei does nothing.

Talking to the Deathless with the chest

  • Player: I cut down the tree using Balmung. You'll never guess what I found inside!
  • Koschei the Deathless: It's a chest.
  • Player: Okay, so maybe you can guess. It doesn't have a keyhole, but appears to be locked.
  • Koschei the Deathless: It was no guess. I feel a strong connection between this and my past. I wonder what's inside?
  • The chest responds to Koschei's presence. You hear a click as it unlocks
  • Koschei the Deathless: Interesting. Have a look inside.

Talking to Koschei again

  • Player: What did you want me to do again?
  • Koschei the Deathless: Have a look in that chest you found.

Opening the chest

  • The chest opens, to reveal... ...a toy ship?

Inspecting the ship

  • It appears to be a toy ship. You should show this to Koschei.

Memories long forgotten[]

  • Player: What do you make of this, Koschei?
  • Koschei the Deathless: How odd. Though looking at this ship, I think I remember something...
  • Player: There appears to be some writing on the back of the sail!
  • 'Koschei, hopefully this will reach you at the right time. You will know in your bones if it is.'
  • Koschei the Deathless: I wonder if the person who erased my memory wrote that. I was obviously meant to find this now, that's why that tree only just started to make me feel uneasy.
  • Player: You said the ship jogged your memory.
  • Koschei the Deathless: Not jogged, more like...opened. Unlocked. It feels like my memory loss was no accident. I remember that I was on a ship like this. Yes, it makes sense...I was found at sea!
  • Player: Anything else?
  • Koschei the Deathless: Pain... Terrible pain. Something awful happened on the water.
  • Player: Where do we go from here?
  • Koschei the Deathless: When I look at this ship, I see it on water.
  • Player: It looks sturdy enough to float. Is there any water down here?
  • Koschei the Deathless: No, but there is a well in Rellekka. That's where I fill my water pouch.

Talking to Koschei again at this point

  • Player: Koschei, what did you want me to do again?
  • Koschei the Deathless: Try floating the ship on water. There is a well in the village.

If there is not a polar bear in the well

  • Player: I'm not sure what this is going to do, but here it goes.
  • You pull up a bucket of water and place the ship in it. You hear a click as a panel opens on the deck of the ship, exposing a small jewel.

If there is a polar bear in the well

  • Player: I'm not sure what this is going to do, but here it goes.
  • You pull up a bucket of water and place the ship in it. There seems to be a polar bear in the well!
  • Polar Bear: Aren't you a little old to be playing with toy ships?
  • Player: You are looking...well.
  • Polar Bear: Tell me you didn't just say that.
  • The polar bear goes back to spying from the well, and you turn your attention to the ship. You hear a click as a panel opens on the deck of the ship, exposing a small jewel.

Interacting with the jewel

  • The jewel glows faintly. Koschei will want to see this.

Memories returning[]

Talking to Koschei without the jewel

This section is a stub. You can help by expanding it.
  • Koschei the Deathless: Don't worry, I have it right here
  • Koschei the Deathless: You really do need to be more careful

Talking to Koschei with the jewel

  • Player: I tried putting the ship on water. A hidden compartment opened, revealing this jewel.
  • Koschei the Deathless: Let me look at it.
  • Koschei inspects the jewel. He looks like he is hypnotized by it.
  • Player: Koschei, are you okay? Do you remember anything else about your past?
  • Koschei the Deathless: Indeed, (Fremennik name). I know what happened on that ship. I was attacked by an assassin. He was the one who branded me with this symbol.
  • Player: So you were attacked by a follower of Zamorak?
  • Koschei the Deathless: Possibly. However I sense that this is not the full story. It was a fierce battle, so much that it tore the ship apart.
  • Player: That would explain why you were found at sea with no ship in sight.
  • Koschei the Deathless: I sense we are close now, the barriers in my mind are coming down. This jewel is the key, but I am not sure what to do with it. Any ideas?
  • You look at the jewel closely. You feel like it is urging you to do something to it.
  • Attempt to cut the jewel
    • You attempt to craft the jewel. It responds to your actions by turning blue.
  • Attempt to crush the jewel (level 90 Strength)
    • You put pressure on the jewel. It responds to your actions by turning red.
  • Attempt to detect any curses (Level 90 Prayer)
    • You attempt to detect any curses on the jewel. It responds to your actions by turning green.
  • If you made the gem turn blue
    • Player: I made the jewel turn blue.
  • If you made the gem turn red.
    • Player: I made the jewel turn red.
  • If you made the gem turn green.
    • I made the jewel turn green.
  • Koschei the Deathless: This is it! Hand me the jewel when you are finished with it. You can have a look at it any time.
  • You give the jewel to Koschei.

Memories Restored[]

  • Koschei the Deathless: I now know who I was! My memory is returning!
  • Player: So you remember your past?
  • Koschei the Deathless: Yes, I also know my real name!
  • Player: So, who are you then, really?
  • Koschei the Deathless: My name is not Koschei. It is...
  • Kharshai: Kharshai!
  • Player: Kharshai? A...Mahjarrat?
  • Kharshai: Yes, I have been concealed as Koschei. I retain the memories of my time as Koschei, but this is my true form.
  • Player: You still look slightly Fremennik.
  • Kharshai: Yes, I quite like it. It seems staying as Koschei for so long has altered my appearance. An unintended – but, I must say not unwelcome – side effect of my disguise.
  • Player: Why remove your disguise now?
  • Kharshai: It seems the spell was set to break when certain conditions were met. Zamorak's and Zaros's power is stronger than it has been in a long time, and I am needed here.
  • Player: Needed? By what? By whom?
  • Kharshai: You are about to find out. It is probably best if you stand back. I sense our guests approaching.
  • Player: Guests?
  • Kharshai: Yes, guests. Treat them as such. Do not anger them if you wish to leave this cavern alive.
  • Kharshai: Remember, do not interfere. Your life may be forfeit if you do.
  • Player: I understand.
  • Enakhra: Kharshai...So you've finally shown your face, after all this time.
  • Kharshai: Enakhra. It's good to see you, too.
  • Enakhra: Don't take that tone with me, Kharshai. You will regret it.
  • Kharshai: I doubt that very much. I am just as powerful as before and you know it, or you would not have been sent here.
  • Enakhra: How did you know I wa-
  • Akthanakos: Kharshai! We sensed your return. We did not expect to see-
  • Enakhra: Ah, Akthanakos. Slower than ever, I see.
  • Akthanakos: Enakhra! What are you doing here?
  • Kharshai: She is here for the same reason you are, Akthanakos. You are both here to try to gain my loyalty.
  • Akthanakos: That is untrue! I wanted to confirm it was really you.
  • Kharshai: If you are going to lie, try not to be so transparent.
  • Enakhra: I could always turn him into a boneguard again.
  • Akthanakos: Do not threaten me, Enakhra!
  • Try to calm things down.
    • Player: There is no need to get viole-
    • Enakhra: Quiet, human! Do not interfere! Don't think I've forgotten your past actions!
    • continues below
  • Stay silent.
    • continues below
  • Kharshai: ENOUGH! I will not side with you. Now leave.
  • Enakhra: I knew we could count on your support, Khars-
  • Kharshai: BOTH of you. Get out of here, before I force you to.
  • Akthanakos: Do not expect support from the faithful of Zaros in the future...or the next ritual, Kharshai!
  • Enakhra: You cannot escape the war, Kharshai. One way or another, you will be dragged into it. And when that happens, it would be...unfortunate were you to stand alone.
  • Player: Kosch- I mean Kharshai. What happens now?
  • Kharshai: I need time to fully recover my memory. There are still a few gaps. While I am not sure who attacked me, the branding was definitely meant to send a message.
  • Player: Can I help at all?
  • Kharshai: You have done much for me. However, I have returned to try and unite the Mahjarrat. If we go on killing each other, we will not survive much longer.
  • Player: Any ideas on how you can do that?
  • Kharshai: Sadly, no. At this point it would take orders directly from Zamorak and Zaros to get them to stop fighting. I will do what I can to maintain the balance of power for now.
  • Player: Sounds like a difficult task.
  • Kharshai: Indeed. I may call on you again in the future to help me, but at this moment you are due a reward for your assistance. Do you have Balmung with you?

If you have Balmung in your inventory

  • Player: Yes, I have it right here.
  • Kharshai: I will improve Balmung for you as a thank you for helping me find myself.
  • Kharshai hands you the new, improved Balmung, and a lamp.
  • Kharshai: Use this axe wisely, (first three letters of your Fremennik name)- I mean, Player. I have improved its ability to slay dagannoths, as thanks to you and to the Fremennik people.
  • Player: Thank you Kharshai.

If you have Balmung equipped

  • Player: Yes, I have it equipped, ready to use.
  • Kharshai: If you would, please place it in your inventory or hand it to me. I cannot work on it if you are wielding it.

If you do not have Balmung

  • Player: I'm afraid I don't. Do you need it?
  • Kharshai: I don't need it back, but I will improve it for you. Bring it to me and I will improve its effectiveness against the dagannoth menace.

Dialogue options after cutscene[]

  • Kharshai: You have questions, Player. Speak.
  • Whose side are you on?
    • Player: Whose side are you on, Kharshai?
    • Kharshai: I intend to stay neutral. If the balance between the Mahjarrat were to be disturbed, it would be disastrous. We have already lost many to sacrifices and assassinations.
    • Player: What about beyond the Mahjarrat?
    • Kharsai: All the Mahjarrat will be keeping an eye on what is going on, but their primary concerns are Zamorak and Zaros. My neutrality will maintain the balance.
  • Player: What will you do now?
    • Kharshai: I will remain here. The Fremennik people have treated me well, and while they have lost their deathless warrior, they have gained a new friend.
  • About that jewel...
    • Kharshai: What do you want to know?
    • May I have a look at the jewel?
      • Player: Can I have a look at the jewel I found?
      • Kharshai: You may, although it will not leave this cavern, for it is bound to me. I feel that it has more to reveal.
    • I'll come back another time.
      • Player: Sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you. I'll be going now.
  • Player: Sorry to disturb you.
    • Player: Sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you. I'll be going now.

Giving him the jewel following the cutscene[]

  • Kharshai: You have questions, Player. Speak.
  • If you have the jewel on you
    • Player: Kharshai, have a look at the jewel.(only appears if you have the jewel on you)
      • Kharshai: What happened, Player?
      • If you turned it blue
        • Player: I made the jewel turn blue, Kharshai!
        • Kharshai: Interesting, this blue jewel has unlocked another memory.
        • Player: What is it?
        • Kharshai: I now know who erased my memory.
        • Player: Who? Who did that to you?
        • Kharshai: I did.
        • Player: What? You deliberately erased your own memory?
        • Kharshai: Yes. It was the only way to conceal myself from the other Mahjarrat. Simply transforming myself would not protect me from the Mahjarrat's innate ability to sense each other.
        • Player: If you didn't know you were a Mahjarrat, how could they?
        • Kharshai: Exactly. Thank you again for helping me.
      • If you made the jewel turn red
        • Player: I made the jewel turn red, Kharshai!
        • Kharshai: Interesting, this red jewel has unlocked another memory.
        • Player: What is it?
        • Kharshai: I now know how Balmung came to be.
        • Player: Where did it come from?
        • Kharshai: It was an experiment. I wanted to see if I could enhance bane ore to make a fearsome weapon.
        • Player: Then why wasn't it enchanted when the Fremennik found it?
        • Kharshai: I had not yet completed the spell. I was travelling to the Fremennik Isles for dagannoth blood.
        • Player: And it came into contact with the blood when I used it to slay dagannoths in defence of Rellekka.
        • Kharshai: Precisely. This allowed me to complete the enhancement. Thank you for assisting me.
      • If you made the jewel turn green
        • Player: I made the jewel turn green, Kharshai!
        • Kharshai: This green jewel has unlocked another memory.
        • Player: What did you discover?
        • Kharshai: I know why I am still powerful after all this time.
        • Player: There must have been a good reason.
        • Kharshai: As you know, the Mahjarrat sacrifice one of their own to maintain their power. Usually, the weakest is selected.
        • Player: Yes. I was present at the last one.
        • Kharshai: The assassination attempt weakened me. Coupled with my neutral stance towards the factions, I would have been considered as the sacrifice.
        • Player: So you chose not to attend the ritual?
        • Kharshai: That was the best way to avoid being killed. But by not attending the ritual, I missed out on the rejuvenation, and risked falling behind the others in terms of power.
        • Player: That would have been a problem.
        • Kharshai: However, the drain on my power when in the form of Koschei was almost zero.
        • Player: The other Mahjarrat became weaker, even in human form. Why didn't you?
        • Kharshai: The sealing of my memory was the key. Even in human form, Mahjarrat can still use their powers.
        • Player: As you didn't know you had the power, you were not using it.
        • Kharshai: Indeed, Player. This information will interest all Mahjarrat. I suspect they are already working on a way to locate anyone hidden using this method, in case someone else attempts it.

Post Miniquest Dialogue[]

Trying to leave with the jewel

  • Kharshai's Jewel vanishes from your bag. It has returned to him.

Talking to Thorvald after the miniquest

  • Player: Hey, Thorvald! Is everything okay here?
  • Thorvald: No, everything is not alright! Koschei turned out to be a powerful being known as a Mahjarrat! I heard arguing and popped my head down to see what was going on! Saw the whole thing!
  • Player: Yes, it's true. He's your friend, so I don't think he is a threat to you.
  • Thorvald: That's not what I am worried about.
  • Player: Then what is the matter?
  • Thorvald: Who am I going to get to test the young Fremennik warriors now? No one else will volunteer to be attacked every day!
  • Player: Maybe you should take his place: dress like him and fight in the trial. Since it is only a test of bravery, you can stop when they have proven themselves.
  • Thorvald: Ah, I see how you got Peer the Seer's vote now! You are wise indeed. Let's keep this little...arrangement between us.
