ā | ===Notes=== |
||
ā | * Many high-level monsters (especially boss monsters) would most likely have greater than 99 Attack/Strength/Defence. Turmoil treats such levels as level 99 for the purpose of calculating the additional bonuses. |
||
ā | * When in combat against multiple opponents, Turmoil calculates its additional bonuses according to the strongest opponent's levels. |
||
+ | Turmoil is often compared to the prayer Piety, which is the strongest melee prayer on the standard prayerbook. Piety requires 70 Prayer, 70 Defence, and completion of the Knight Waves Training Grounds; Turmoil requires 95 Prayer and completion of The Temple at Senntisten. |
||
ā | ==Limitations== |
||
ā | Turmoil's primary limitations are its high Prayer requirement, that it cannot be used alongside any Sap Curses or Leech Curses, and that its usefulness is limited against opponents that do not use melee. Because some monsters only use Magic and/or Ranged, they are treated as having Attack and Strength levels of 1. Therefore, Turmoil will not offer its additional boost to Attack and Strength against such opponents, although Defence will receive its boost as normal. Some examples of popular monsters that do not use melee are aquanites, waterfiends, spiritual mages, aberrant spectres, Dagannoth Supreme, Dagannoth Prime, and the Phoenix. |
||
+ | If comparing stat increases, Turmoil is not much stronger than Piety and drains prayer 50% faster, yet Piety lacks the ability to drain enemy stats while Turmoil can drain them strongly. Also, the healing curse Soul Split can be used on the Ancient Curses with 92 Prayer and provides another incentive to use the book. |

ā | Turmoil is noteworthy for being the "strongest" prayer in the game in terms of melee boosts. It is comparable to Piety, although the two differ in a number of ways. Piety requires completion of the Knight Waves Training Grounds activity, 70 prayer and 70 Defence. Turmoil requires completion of The Temple at Senntisten, and 95 prayer. Piety is a prayer, and Turmoil is a curse. As such, you can not access useful curses while using Piety, nor useful prayers while using Turmoil. Piety's bonuses are constant and independent of the user's opponents in combat, if any. Piety also gives a higher base bonus to Attack and Defence. As such, Piety is ideal for offensive prayer flashing. After at least one hit with Turmoil active, the user will gain an additional boost of approximately 15% of the opponent's Attack/Defence level, and 10% of the opponent's Strength level, which usually results in stronger bonuses than Piety (this depends on the user's and opponent's levels). Additionally, Turmoil's drain rate (10 point per 2 seconds) is one-third slower than Piety's (10 point per 1.5 seconds). This makes Turmoil ideal for fast paced combat against high level opponents. |

Turmoil is an Ancient curse that requires 95 Prayer to activate, the same as Anguish and Torment. It can boost the user's Attack, Defence, and melee damage significantly, as well as drain those of opponents. It is the second strongest Melee-boosting prayer, beaten only by Malevolence.
Effects
Turmoil adds 10 levels to the user's Attack when calculating hit chance and Defence when calculating block chance, and boosts melee damage by 10%; it drains opponents' Attack when calculating hit chance and Defence when calculating block chance by 6 to 10 levels, and drains their melee damage by 9% to 15% (6% to 10% in PvP). The boosts to the user are constant, but like leech curses, the draining of opponents must strengthen over time.
A player will gain the same melee and defence bonuses regardless of an enemy's class, but Turmoil cannot lower its damage or accuracy if it does not use melee. Note that most high-level bosses cannot be drained by Turmoil or any ancient curse.
Sap and leech curses cannot be used alongside Turmoil.
Turmoil and Piety
Turmoil is often compared to the prayer Piety, which is the strongest melee prayer on the standard prayerbook. Piety requires 70 Prayer, 70 Defence, and completion of the Knight Waves Training Grounds; Turmoil requires 95 Prayer and completion of The Temple at Senntisten.
If comparing stat increases, Turmoil is not much stronger than Piety and drains prayer 50% faster, yet Piety lacks the ability to drain enemy stats while Turmoil can drain them strongly. Also, the healing curse Soul Split can be used on the Ancient Curses with 92 Prayer and provides another incentive to use the book.

Trivia
- Switching from the Ancient Curses to regular prayers at the White Knights' Castle altar, while holding Turmoil, is an elite Falador task.
- The only NPCs known to use Turmoil are Nex, the leader of Zaros' forces in the God Wars Dungeon, and Kal'Ger the Warmonger, a Dungeoneering boss. The latter does not use the prayer himself; rather, he copies the prayer when players use it.
- According to the ancient hymnal, Turmoil's verbal incantation is "Vim inimici mihi bono inclina." (Turn the power of my enemy to my benefit.)
