A player activating Turmoil

Turmoil is a prayer in the Ancient Curses prayer book, which is unlocked after completing The Temple at Senntisten. Requiring 95 Prayer to activate, Turmoil has the highest Prayer requirement of all prayers in the game. It can boost the user's Attack, Strength, and Defence significantly when in combat against powerful opponents, as well as draining those of opponents, making it the strongest melee-boosting prayer in the game.

Notes

  • When in combat against multiple opponents, Turmoil calculates its additional bonuses according to the strongest opponent's levels.

Limitations

Turmoil's primary limitations are its high Prayer requirement, that it cannot be used alongside any Sap Curses or Leech Curses, and that its usefulness is limited against opponents that do not use melee. Because some monsters only use Magic and/or Ranged, they are treated as having Attack and Strength levels of 1. Therefore, Turmoil will not offer its additional boost to Attack and Strength against such opponents, although Defence will receive its boost as normal. Some examples of popular monsters that do not use melee are aquanites, waterfiends, spiritual mages, aberrant spectres, Dagannoth Supreme, Dagannoth Prime, and the Phoenix.

However, since the Evolution of Combat, a range equivalent (Anguish) and a mage equivalent (Torment) of Turmoil have been released.

Turmoil and Piety

Turmoil is noteworthy for being the "strongest" prayer in the game in terms of melee boosts. It is comparable to Piety, although the two differ in a number of ways. Piety requires completion of the Knight Waves Training Grounds activity, 70 prayer and 70 Defence. Turmoil requires completion of The Temple at Senntisten, and 95 prayer. Piety is a prayer, and Turmoil is a curse. As such, you can not access useful curses while using Piety, nor useful prayers while using Turmoil. Piety's bonuses are constant and independent of the user's opponents in combat, if any. Piety is ideal for offensive prayer flashing because turmoil when not flashed does not target the opponents defence and melee stats. After at least one hit with Turmoil active, the target will begin to lose defensive power and offensive power with melee. Turmoil's drain rate (300 points per minute) vs Piety (at 333 points per minute). This makes Turmoil ideal for fast paced combat against high level opponents.

Advantages of Piety are:

  • Much easier to get.
  • Allows use of other prayers.

Advantages of Turmoil are:

  • More powerful against higher level opponents.
  • Allows use of other curses.
  • Slower Prayer point drain.
