Future update
This article contains information about an upcoming update.
It should consist only of facts from official Jagex releases and not speculation or predictions. For further details, see our future content policy.

The following is a list of upcoming updates, derived from official Jagex content:

Skill updates

Smithing

Lil Duck 99 asks: Do you plan on updating old skills such as Mining, Smithing that essentially lost most of it's purpose other than show?

Mod Mark: Yes.

— Mod Mark [1]

Construction

Fiks1 asks: Will we see an update for construction anytime soon? It's gone quite a while without anything. Then there's all of the current known bugs with Player Owned Houses like chairs turning the wrong way etc. Are you working on fixing that?

Mod Mark: Yes. We recently made an update to Construction in which we fixed many bugs, and we do plan to add more rooms (like the recent menagerie) in the future. It’s tough to add new features when we knew that aspects of the graphics were broken - we had to fix them rather than add more broken content.

— Mod Mark [1]
Black Firexp asks: The Construction skill has been lacking a large update since its release. For instance, only recently did we finally get a new room to keep up with Summoning. My question is: will there be a massive Construction update to keep the skill up-to-date with other recent updates to the game? Thank you for your time!

Mod Mark: We are looking at a Construction skill addition at the moment, but it’s not massive.

— Mod Mark

Prayer

Mod Emilee:"Why wasn't there any new range/magic prayers?"

We did neglect the mages and rangers a little with the new prayers, but then Zaros prayers were primarily designed to be used by meleers, just as the original prayers were.

We do have plans for future prayers, specifically designed for mages and rangers, and we will be adding them in the future; just as we did with the original prayers.

The balancing behind the combat triangle is important to us and we are looking at the other non-melee equipment and abilities as we speak! More to follow next year. :)

  • Note: The prayer 'Augury' that is unlocked whilst training the Dungeoneering skill is a magic based prayer, and in a recent FAQ a jagex mod stated that a range prayer is in the works to be released via the dungeoneering rewards.

Another Slayer Update

NElGHBOR asks: The recent update to the Slayer skill was amazing. I really like the new dungeon addition to the waterfall. Slayer is a skill that I believe to be a favourite among the mature gamers. Do you plan on coming out with any more updates for the more veteran players? If so, any hints? :)

Mod Fetzki: I like the Slayer updates a lot, too, and there is one more in development at the moment, which again is one of my favourite updates in the near future. So, yes, there will be something for you.

— Mod Fetzki

Note: this is most likely the Slayer challenges released on 21st of April. This update expanded on the idea of Special tasks like Kuradals TzTokJad task.

Dungeoneering

Mod Emilee "

"In the recent Q&A you said you were working on a new dungeon with new bosses that have among the highest LP count in the game. Is Daemonheim it?"

Yes, although we do have future plans for expansions to other dungeons in the game too.

New no profit / powertraining methods

ISkullCrushI asks: I have 99 Woodcutting and I’m keen to max it out to 200 million XP. Is there any chance of speeding up how fast magic logs come? I’ve timed it and it takes longer than catching sharks, which seems a bit unfair that level 99 fishers have more advantage of making money faster than level 99 woodcutters. The rebalance you did was great with the sawmill and ivy, but could you increase the time on magic trees, please?

Mod Mark: We dont think that each skill should be equally difficult or hard – far from it. We encourage different skills to be, well, different. :) If you want to make the money that a shark fisherman does, then perhaps you could fish some sharks? The Woodcutting will still be there when you’re finished. Besides, not so long ago a magic log was worth more than a shark. There’s no reason to think that won’t be the case again in the future. Regarding the rebalancing of Woodcutting: yes, we’re really happy with how that went and we may apply some of the same principals to other skills in the future.

— Mod Mark

Hiscores

Crash Jordan asks: Can we ever expect more features to be added to the highscores(sic)?

Mod Fetzki: The highscore module is a very old one and we are currently looking at a major rewrite, which should enable us to add more features in future.

— Mod Fetzki [1]

This might refer to the recently released Adventurer's Logs, or the Barbarian Assault statistics.

Distractions and Diversions

Court Cases

I've coded a prototype case involving a certain 'Mugger (level: 6)'. Mod Mark played through it and loved the gameplay, so I've been given the go-ahead to code the rest of the project.

Currently, you'll be given a case and get to choose whether you want to prosecute or defend the accused. Then you read a few documents on the background of the case and do a bit of sleuthing. When you feel ready, you start the trial and present all your findings to the jury, just like you did in King's Ransom, but with a few new surprises...

— Mod Nancy [4]

Quests

Elemental Workshop III

Zameruz asks: Will there be a new Elemental Workshop quest, because there's a kinda gate with a body symbol on it?

Mod Mark: Yes, it’s being concepted right now. I would expect to see it sometime next year.

— Mod Mark [1]

It has also been hinted at in the Chaos Elemental's suitcase; see http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Letters_to_the_Chaos_Elemental#Letter_13_.28Suitcase.29

Fairy Tale part III

Mod Tytn quotes: I’ve just finished the development work on Fairy Tale 3 and I should be happy, relieved and pleased with myself.[1]

Erics Pixels asks: Is Fairy Tale Part 3 going to be the next Grandmaster quest?

Mod Fetzki: No, Fairy Tale Part 3 is going to be a Master quest.

— Mod Fetzki

Myreque quest series - Part 5 may not be the last quest in the series

J O S4 asks: When are you releasing a new part of the myreque Quest series? Its one of my Favourites.

Mod Mark: The developer for that storyline was very busy with While Guthix Sleeps for a long time and, since then, has been working on other projects (including, recently, a different storyline). After that, they will work on Myreque part 5! We actually have a nearly finished design brief for the next quest in the series, but it’s not in development yet.

— Mod Mark [1]
Godly 20 asks: Are the final quests of the elf and Myreque series going to come out anytime this year?

Best wishes for the year and, as always, keep up the good work! ;)

Mod Fetzki: Who says that there will be only one more Myreque quest? I think there should be more...

— Mod Fetzki

Several more Grandmaster quests to come

Og Gangsta66 asks: Will the next Grandmaster quest have requirements that make it this grade (as you did with Curse of Arrav, where the requirements made it a Master quest), or will the gameplay and the puzzles itself base it on its Grandmaster grade?

Mod Mark: We are currently planning a Grandmaster quest that will have several level 80 requirements*. I know to some people that are still low-level, but over the last year we have raised our top quest requirements significantly, and will continue to do so over the next year.

* Please note that this might not be the next Grandmaster quest we release.

— Mod Mark [1]
  • One of the Grandmaster quests Jagex said to be released is Nomad's Requiem, which was released on 11 January 2010. However, this is not the level 80 requirements quest, as none of the requirements for Nomad's Requiem are level 80 or above, simply recommended to be that high.

Andrey138 asks: In the previous Q&A, we were told a Grandmaster quest was planned that would require several stats in the 80s. You also said it may not be the next Grandmaster that will be released. So, will this be coming out in 2010 or not? Is this the next Grandmaster or not? Feel free to shed any more light on it, if at all possible. At least DO answer as much of this question as you can, please. You have my permission to partially answer it or leave parts out.

Mod Fetzki: The thing with Grandmaster quests is that it is quite an effort to get them right, and we want to give them enough time in order to do so, therefore, I cannot promise it for any time soon, but we are working on it. I hope very much that it will still be released in 2010.

— Mod Fetzki

Two more quests in the Dwarf storyline

Lord Ivan XX asks: In 2010, will we see more of a variety of quest storylines? Well, in 2009, obviously the main quest theme was Mahjarrat with four quests in eight months or something like that. To me, that storyline is continuing to progress at an extremely fast rate. My favourite quest series is the dwarf one. Is there still a plan to make it a five part series with the fifth one coming out as a Grandmaster?

Mod Fetzki: We think that we had a good mix in 2009. Don't forget we had continuation of many quest lines like the dwarf storyline, the elf storyline and the Fremennik one, on top of the penguin one and the conclusion of the cave goblin quest series. And, yes, we are continuing the dwarf storyline this year and we still plan to have a final one after that.

— Mod Fetzki

White Knight quest in 2010

JJ The SageWill asks: Will we hear more of King Vallance soon? Where has he gone, and what are the real goals of the White Knights and Temple Knights?

Mod Mark: Interestingly, we were discussing Vallance this week. We wanted to write one of Mod Nancy's court cases about him, but we decided the plotline was potentially awesome and so we would be better writing an entire quest about it. Also (and related to one of the above questions), we really don't have a clear plan right now where he is... :) You will see some more knight content this year, though not regarding King Vallance.

— Mod Mark

Quest series finished in 2010

Duke Risto asks: This question is a very short one: are you going to finish any quest series this year?

Mod Fetzki: You will get a short answer too: Yes.

— Mod Fetzki

As it has been confirmed that the Fairy Tale series will be concluded in 2010, this may not have any further meaning.

Void Knights series

In his Developers' Blog, Mod Moltare outlines an upcoming series about the Void Knights consisting of "three quests and an activity".[5] Mod Moltare mentions that "Summer Knights is more a pun than an indication of the release date!" suggesting that that may be the name of one of the quests.

Items

Achievement Diary set and more Equipment slots

Snrubnayrpk asks:

I Counted the areas of runescape that could be grouped into a achievement diary, there are too many areas to reward a item for each equip slot, Will you just release more sheilds and rings or get more creative with the reward items?

Mod Mark: Not all areas need to have an Achievement Diary. Interestingly, we do plan to have an Achievement Diary set with a potential set bonus. Who’s to say that there won’t be more areas, or indeed more slots, in a few years’ time?

— Mod Mark [1]

Dragon crossbow

Kaiba184 asks: Ok i really only got one question that has probably already been asked, but are you guys planning to introduce a dragon crossbow anytime soon?

Mod Mark: Yes, but not until we have rebalanced the combat triangle.

— Mod Mark [1]

Dragon warhammer

Lil Duck 99 asks: Will there be a ever be a Dragon Warhammer introduced into the game?

Mod Mark: Yes.

— Mod Mark [1]
Frahaleah asks: Do you think that it might be possible to release a new dragon weapon sometime in the remaining dwarf/Red Axe storyline, like, say, the dragon warhammer, since the dwarves do use warhammers and it would fit the theme?

Mod Mark : Nice idea, although I feel new dragon equipment is more likely to come from a drop table than as a quest reward, so it depends on the type of creature dropping it rather than the quest it’s associated with. So, if we released some new dwarf NPCs to fight we might add this, but I am not sure that we need more level 60 equipment in the game.

— Mod Mark

Dragon ore / dragon bar

Australiank asks: Will there ever be Dragon Ore (or Dragonite)? Used to create Dragon bars, of course...

Mod Mark: Probably! Though the owners of such ore wouldn’t be too happy about losing it, and we wouldn’t like it much if they came looking for it...

— Mod Mark [1]

This may be known as the update towards metal dragons as well, or possibly hinting that you have to take it somehow from Dragonkin (they may still exist)... but who knows?

New Armour and weapons

Andrey138 asks: As a result of new elite content (slayer creatures, new dungeon, etc.) will there be any new equipment released that would actually render things like a whip or godsword obselete in terms of stats/exp rates when training? (A suggestion would be to do so but restrict them from PvP usage because of high KO capability. They should actually be the only ways to stand a chance against future insane bosses and such.)

Mod Benny: We have a big set of equipment planned that will have level requirements ranging all the way up to 99; however, these will only be available within restricted settings. Releasing more powerful weapons to the entire game would have big consequences for existing content (especially PvP, as you’ve already pointed out), so we need to have a good look at the whole of combat before we can take items to such powerful levels that they would make current items obsolete.

— Mod Benny [1]
  • Note: The set of equipment referred to is likely the Dungeoneering set, which does include some level 99 items (specifically, those items which are tier 11).
Jagex' New Year message: (...)So, what is the new year going to bring? (...) And yes, there will be new combat equipment as well, and also a new Grandmaster quest – but more on that closer to release. (...)

99 requirement armour

Pro Cheese93 asks: 1) Will there ever be equipment with the requirement of level 99 in a skill to use? 2) What do you think about making elite equipment where you need level 99 in the non-combat skill to make it (it would be untradeable) and level 99 in the combat skill to use it?

Mod Mark: 1) Yes! 2) Cool! We should do level 80 and 90 gear first, though, don't you think?

— Mod Mark
  • Note: The new dungeoneering skill has released level 99 armour into gameplay.

New mage hats

c d o d asks: I, and possibly others of the RuneScape community, would like to know if there shall be a new Magic-related quest like Desert Treasure or Lunar Diplomacy?

Mod Mark: The recent Rune Mechanics quest was quite magey, I thought. :) I just need to know how I can get me one of those cool hats the wizards in it are wearing!

— Mod Mark
  • Note: The fact the hats will be released can be indirectly derived from the answer. There was no question about the hats, though Mod Mark showed interested in them. It might be a strong hint, and could be part of the combat rebalancing updates.

More uses for Ivandis Flail

Jellenoppes asks: Can we expect some new content in which we'll need our Ivandis Flail? :)

Mod Mark: Yes!

— Mod Mark

Better weapons than Godswords

JamesesGlory asks: Will there ever be even better weapons than the godswords?

Mod Fetzki: Yes!

— Mod Fetzki

Game

2010: Year of skill completion

Onewhisper asks: Many players, myself included, have asked for high level content, Jagex has confirmed multiple times that you will be creating this content soon. Any chance we can get a development diary about it?

Mod Fetzki: Skill-related updates are much harder to blog about without giving away too many spoilers, too. We can understand completely that you are eager to learn what we have planned for the higher end of the skills, but I can only assure you that there is at least one update aimed at the higher end of a skill in every month until the end of this year. We will also continue to fill out skills next year.

— Mod Fetzki [1]
  • Note: This was said in 2009; the 'aimed update until the end of this year' refers thus to 2009 and not to 2010.
Will 1b asks: Would it be possible to have more benefits of having level 99 in a skill? Say, for combat-related skills, maybe a 5% increase in the skill, and for non-combat related skills, perhaps special items to wear or more things to be able to do when you’re level 99. Getting to level 92 is only halfway to 99, and with most skills there isn't really much content after 92 for the time spent needed to level. (Admittedly, levelling does generally become faster at higher levels.)

Mod Mark: We do plan to add more high-level, 90+ content to the game, but I would also like to address the gaps in the 80s. The strykewyrm update is the kind of update that appeals to me at the moment regarding skill updates, taking three ‘gaps’ at different levels and filling them.

— Mod Mark

New Dungeon

Andrey138 asks: What is the progress on the current high level dungeon? Does it have more to do than the Godwars Dungeon? Is it more challenging and poses unique things to do like in Corporeal Beast and Tormented Demons?

Mod Mark: It’s full of unique challenges and boss fights. I read through one of the design briefs for the boss monsters and the death mechanic was very... different. Some of the biggest NPC hitpoint counts in the game will exist here.

— Mod Mark [1]
  • Note: It may be possible that the dungeon mentioned is the Dungeoneering dungeon released in April of 2010.

Combat Triangle Balancing

Q) I know that J mods have acknowledged the combat triangle as not being as equilateral as it should be. Are there any plans to fix it, mainly with mage,

and partially with range?
A) Yes, we plan to fix it. It’s too early to tell how this will be done.

— Mod Mark [1]

Keyboard control

Shamushand asks:

In your opinion, do you think RuneScape will ever surpass it's current engine limitations, like having our characters walk in a grid, or having the game run in 600 millisecond 'ticks'? Do you have any more advanced graphic features planned (bloom, Depth of Field, etc)? Do you think we'll ever have the ability to control our characters with the keyboard, like some other MMO's?

Have you been spying on us? Are you one of our staff in disguise? :P These questions are remarkably similar to questions we have been asking ourselves internally. To answer your questions: maybe, yes and yes.

— Andrew Gower [6]

More Elite diaries to be created

Jagex asked on the future updates on RSOF for player's suggestions on possible future elite tasks and rewards. As this thread is posted in future updates section (and not suggestions section) and there's a develop blog in the same section created, it is to be assumed there will be more elite diaries in the future.[7]

  • Note: The threads Concerning questions and suggestions in relation to the Elite development blog have been deleted. Indicating that Jagex May Have already decided which suggestions would be suitable for the Elite tasks.

Barbarian Assault, Gnomeball, Trouble brewing and Castlewars Updates

Upgrading everything was not achievable in one year, and, frankly, defining a whole year as a year of upgrades was an overstatement. There are many things we are yet to upgrade that were right at the top of our list, like Tournaments, Gnomeball and Barbarian Assault. We haven’t forgotten them.

— Mod Mark [1]
  • Note: the Barbarian Assault update was released on the 19th of January 2010.
Jellenoppes asks: 2) Any plans for updating Castle Wars?

3) Could you make a tutorial for Trouble Brewing, because I can't figure out how it works.

Mod Mark: 2) Yes! 3) I love Trouble Brewing, but we know we need to rework a fair amount of it. Some of the gameplay is just broken now. I’d like to fix it up before teaching people how to play it. There is an excellent KB article on it, though – try reading that.

— Mod Mark

Measures against spamming price manipulation clans

King Dancing asks: About merchant clans and GE price manipulation: when will we see an update which will stop them all at once?

Mod Fetzki: We don't want to stop merchant clans as long as they play by the rules, and this means they don't manipulate prices, they merely enjoy the gameplay factor of merchanting with all its risks and benefits and that is alright. What is annoying is the aggressive advertisement of some of these clans and we want to do something about that.

— Mod Fetzki

Pollnivneach smoke dungeon

player asks: Any plans with the weird machine in the Pollnivneach smoke dungeon?

Mod Mark: Yes!

— Mod Mark

More fairy ring teleports

Yt Da White asks: Will there be any new fairy ring locations added this year? I did put up a thread about this (and the auto dial fairy ring system – quick find code: 78-79-547-58762243) back in April last year, but didn't receive a reply about it.

Mod Mark: Yes. Sorry we didn’t reply to your thread; we would love to be able to reply to every thread, but then we wouldn’t have time to make any content!

— Mod Mark
  • Note: It sounds plausible this update will come along with Fairy Tale part 3.

Improved Fairy Ring Teleports

beausant asks: There are loads of extra items that are obtained through quests which give you access to other areas or teleports such as the fairy rings. Have you considered that rather than giving us an item we have to then store (taking up bank space) and get out (taking up inventory space) to use, you could not just create a screen similar to the emote screen, from which you could use the fairy rings without having to wield a staff (for example)? This could be applied to other items/unlocks and would also serve as a guide to all players to what has and hasn’t been unlocked by them. It would also help players like myself who have been playing for years, but who keep forgetting how to do things.

Mod Fetzki: Boy, you are going to like Fairy Tale 3. ;)

— Mod Fetzki
  • Note:This implies that FTP3 might introduce staff-free fairy rings

Changing PVP mechanics

Qt melanie asks: I know you already enacted measures to prevent 76king, but is there anything else you might do to either remove the statues (which are lowering the value of the GP) or change them in any way?

Mod Fetzki: Yes, but there is nothing that I want to disclose at this point.

— Mod Fetzki

New F2P magic spells

Wisdom Wins asks: Are Jagex working on/thinking of an update to rebalance the problem of F2P Magic being totally ineffective in PvP Worlds? (New robes/spells are needed.) Please note this only applies to F2P.

Mod Fetzki: Yes, we are doing many small changes to the combat triangle and some of them also affect F2P.

— Mod Fetzki

Improved Summoning emote

xLuminaire asks: Will the old Summoning emote ever return? It would be nice if it came back; it looked much better than the current one.

Mod Fetzki: The emote caused a lot of issues for players that stood around and suddenly got lag because of it. It basically needed way too much data for what we normally allow in the game, but we are working on a better version of the Summoning skillcape emote now.

— Mod Fetzki

Graphics

Magic Graphics Update

"Animation Update: Pack 1" Developer Blogs

Tedaus: [...] In Pack 1 you said that emotes would be updated. However, they were left out and everything else in the pack was updated. Will they be updated in the next pack?
Mod Mark: We hit a bit of a snag with the animation packs. As you know, we’re working on new technology that will allow much of RuneScape’s graphics to run smoother, faster, at a higher definition, and which gives us many more options for the future. We thought we had finished with all the technology relating to the animations, but we weren’t, so rather than rework things (like emotes) now, then finish the tech and have to rework them again, we’ve decided to wait and just rework them once. That way, we can save time and use it to work on other things.

— Mod Mark & Mod Fetzki [1]

Dragon graphical rework

Mod Knox's response to a thread about the new look of the Tutorial dragon.[8]

We are working on this - as mentioned in the recent Q & A

No time frame at this point - but I thought I should let you know.

We certainly don't need a supports list as... It is already happening!

Have a good day.

In the dungeons used for the dungeoneering skill, all dragons have the new look. both chromatic and metal dragons.

Fairy graphical rework

Fairyleak2

An image of the Zanaris graphical makeover, from Mod Fetzki's Icould video.

Mod Tytn's November 2009 Development Blog announces with the release of Fairy Tale III that the city of Zanaris will be updated along with the inhabitants, constituting mostly of fairies. In a Development Diary released earlier that year, Mod Joe presents some screenshots of the what Zanaris would look in the near future. Although not confirmed, it is expected that in 2010 the third part of the Fairy Tale quest series will be released, along with a Zanaris graphical rework that includes the fairies' homes and landscape. In Mod Fetzki's Icould video, released 1 March 2010, a screen in the background of a shot shows someone working on the remake of Zanaris.

Player Moderator Article Update

We’re actually planning to update the moderator section of the KB entirely in the not too distant future, as it’s been a while and the team has evolved a fair bit since it was last updated. Player moderators still don’t receive any behind the scenes information on updates, though, so that section won’t change massively.

Forum

Hey Mod MMG

Q) Will there be a Forum update this year that will let us use HTML/BB codes, A way to post different fonts, colures ect?

A) Hey Royiel, yes there will be..... but I don't know exactly when that will be.

1. Last year, avatars were introduced on the forums. An update which surely spiced things up a bit. As the community grows, do you have plans to update and maybe expand the forums in the (near) future? This year perhaps?

If everything goes to plan it will happen this year.

2. Also, rumours go that there is a big forum update in store for us. Can you confirm this?

Yes, we have spent the last few months working on a big forum update, but there is still more work to be done before we can launch it.

3. Are there any new features for the forums in development at the moment?

Yes.

— Mod Matt K
  • Note:A recent update had allowed greater forum access to players. Players could now post in the forums having at least 5 million exp in total.

RuneScape client

Hello there! My question is: have you ever considered the idea of a RuneScape client, and why/why not? Thank you and congratulations on all the success.

Yes, we are working on creating a client that can be downloaded if you don’t have Java installed or if you prefer not to play in your browser. This should be coming very soon.

— Mod Matt K

NPCs

Fairy General
