Urns are a type of pot made using the Crafting skill, used for gaining bonus experience when training other skills. They were first mentioned in the February 2011 Behind the Scenes article and released on 15 February 2011. A second batch of urns, which also made all rune urns stackable, were then released on 24 July 2017. Urns are available for 10 different skills: Cooking, Divination, Farming, Fishing, Hunter, Mining, Prayer, Runecrafting, Smithing, and Woodcutting.
Creation[]
To make an urn, a player must have 2 soft clay in their inventory. Next, the player must find a pottery wheel to mould the clay on. The player will then be asked to select the type of urn to be made from a drop down menu. To get the drop down menu, click in the upper left hand corner, the brown text box should say "pottery" click on it and the drop down menu should appear. This produces an unfired, or (unf), urn . The types of urns that players can craft depends on the player's Crafting level. Urns that require a higher Crafting level to create will catch scraps from higher level training activities. The assist system can be used to craft urns that are above a player's Crafting level. Alternatively, a no rune, or (nr), urn can be bought from other players.
Once a player has an urn (unf), they can use it with a pottery oven to make an urn (nr). Players must then add a rune to the urn in order to make an urn, or (r), urn which can be used to gain bonus experience. Each urn uses the following runes to be activated:
- Cooking - Fire rune
- Divination - Mind rune
- Farming - Nature rune
- Fishing - Water rune
- Hunter - Mud rune
- Mining - Earth rune
- Prayer - Air rune
- Runecrafting - Pure essence
- Smithing - Fire rune
- Woodcutting - Earth rune
To attach a rune to an urn, you must have the Crafting level required to make the specific urn. For example, to add a rune to a decorated cooking urn (nr), you must have at least 81 Crafting. The assist system can be used for attaching runes to urns, which allows players with any Crafting level to use any type of urn.
When a rune is attached, the player will gain 1 experience in the skill of the urn. For example, if a player adds a fire rune to any tier Smithing urn, they will gain 1 Smithing experience.
Only urns with the no rune (nr) designation are tradeable.
Calculation of materials required[]
- Material needed
All urns give a 20% bonus on the experience required to fill them. Therefore, you can use the following to calculate the required amount of the material gathered in order to fill the urn:
For example: A yew log gives 175 experience and a strong woodcutting urn gives 1662.5 experience. The formula calculates that 47.5 logs are required, so the urn will be full after 48 logs are cut. (If a second woodcutting urn is present in the inventory, the remaining half a log worth of experience will be transferred to the new urn.)
- Percentage filled
The contribution of each unit material toward filling the urn can also be calculated. The following can be used to estimate the percentage contribution of filling the urn per unit material:
Example continued: , so each log will fill the urn by about 2.1%.
- Prayer urns
For the prayer urns the formula is a bit different, since the bonus experience including the unit experience is awarded when the urn is teleported. In this case the "urn experience" above should just be the bonus experience, i.e. one sixth of the experience awarded when teleporting the urn.
Usage[]
Urns are very simple to use. All a player must do is keep the urn in their inventory while training. Empty urns are stackable, but will generate a new used urn item when starting to fill them. For every five normal experience points gained, one bonus experience point is added to the urn. Once the urn has been filled to capacity, it can be teleported to Ernie. A miscellaneous game setting allows players to automatically teleport full urns. After teleporting an urn, the player receives the experience held by the urn. Thus, having a suitable urn in inventory while training a skill results in a 20% higher experience gain. Using an urn enhancer further increases experience awarded by 25% at the expense of 20 divine charges. Urns differ in the skill for which they collect bonus experience, their capacity, and restrictions on the quality of resources from which they can collect scraps.
Only "base" experience from skill training counts towards filling an urn. For example, if one were to mine two ores at once using Varrock armour, only the experience from the first ore would count towards filling the urn. This also means that other "bonus" experience boosts given (such as from a Penance horn or Sacred clay item) or a special experience gain (such as a minigame reward or Genie Lamp) does not count towards filling the urn. For example, cutting magic logs with a will only count for its base 250 experience even if bonus experience is used.
Use of Crystallise has different effects on filling urns of different types. Fishing and woodcutting urns are filled at a normal rate when fishing or woodcutting a crystallised resource spot, while filling mining urns include the 50-87.5% extra experience from using crystallise and light form, which counts towards filling the urn.
Prayer urns[]
Prayer urns are unique in that the player does not receive ashes as a drop when killing a demon with a suitable urn in the inventory. Instead, the experience one would have gained from scattering the ashes plus a 20% bonus are directly added to the urn. This eliminates having to collect the ashes and scattering them manually, and allows training Prayer by killing demons from a safe spot without having to leave the safe spot to collect ashes.
Killing demons is the only way to fill prayer urns, or imps for impious urns. Scattering ashes manually, such as ashes that were obtained as drops or by trade, has no effect on urns and receives no bonus. Prayer urns give a 20% bonus to the experience gained from demonic ashes.
Using multiple urns[]
Only one urn of a specific skill type may be filled at a time. If a player has two or more urns of the same type in the inventory and one is filled, leftovers from the first urn will automatically be added to the second urn. Players may fill multiple urns simultaneously from various skills; for example, filling a cracked fishing urn can be done while also filling a cracked mining urn.
When there are different tiers of urns for the same skill that could be filled during an activity in the player's inventory, the urn with the lower tier is used first before the ones with a higher tier. For example, fishing pike (needs level 25 Fishing) with both a fragile fishing urn (fish up to and ancluding level 30 Fishing, see table further below) and a (normal) fishing urn (fish up to and including level 50 Fishing) will fill up the fragile urn first. The leftover from a full urn from one tier is also added to an empty urn of a different tier.
Players can only have 10 partially filled or full urns in one skill type at a time. Once the maximum number of urns is reached in total (inventory plus bank), at least one urn must be teleported away (only full urns may be teleported) before another urn can be filled. There is very little advantage to be gained from stockpiling full urns - the only use is to speed the completion of a daily challenge that requires urns to be teleported.
Assisting[]
Players can buy an urn (nr) from the Grand Exchange and get an assist to add a rune to activate the urn. When using the Assist system, any suitable urns held by the assisted are activated, but none of the assister.
Beasts of burden[]
Unlike most untradeable items, runed urns (r) can be stored with beasts of burden. It is unclear why this is the case. If this mechanic is ever changed, (nr) urns could be stored along with the appropriate runes. A partially-filled urn cannot be stored with a BOB.

- Gaining experience at Livid Farm

Trivia[]
- When you "Check Level" of an urn that is exactly half full, the message shown is "This (urn type) is half full, or is it half empty?" as opposed to "This (urn type) is 50% full." a reference to the common optimist/pessimist comparison, "Is the glass half empty or half full?"
- Previously, teleporting urns did not require corresponding crafting level to make or add runes to them. However, this was changed with the Evolution of Combat, but the requirement can be boosted or assisted. The crafting level requirement to teleport urns has been removed on 14 August 2017.
- With the game update on 24 July 2017, urns that are filled with a rune (r) are stackable. Also, 4 new types of urns were released: Divination, Farming, Hunter, and Runecrafting.[1]
- With the game update on 31 July 2017, cutting ivy can be used to fill woodcutting urns.[2]
- With the game update on 4 March 2019, tier 3 (normal) urns were given the "Plain" prefix to prevent player confusion.[3]
