Waterskins carry up to four servings of water, and provides protection against the desert heat effect in the Kharidian Desert. Without a waterskin, players will lose health due to dehydration. Without them, the desert is a more dangerous place.
Waterskins can hold up to four sips of water. The number remaining is displayed in brackets in the name.
Full waterskins are dropped by Kalphites and Desert Strykewyrms, and can be bought from various Kharidian NPCs. Empty waterskins are dropped by Desert Lizards.
Players can refill waterskins by using them with water-filled jugs, buckets, or bowls; or using a knife with certain cacti. Cutting a cactus in order to fill a waterskin will yield 10 Woodcutting experience.
In addition, the Lunar spell Humidify will refill all waterskins in a player's inventory, making it possible to stay in the desert indefinitely with waterskins.
This is a highly useful item for quests set in the desert.
It takes about 1 minute and 45 seconds to use 1 portion of the waterskin with desert shirt, desert robe and desert boots.
You can buy a desert shirt, desert robe, desert boots and waterskins (0) and (4) from Shantay in Shantay's Pass for no more than 40 coins each.

Tips
- Do not bring water in open containers (i.e. buckets) instead of waterskins; it will evaporate in the desert heat.
- Bring a knife. If a cactus is found nearby, it can be cut and the water may be used to fill waterskins below four doses. Note that there is only a 50% chance of getting water from cacti, and each cactus provides only one dose. Doing this will provide Woodcutting xp.
